Greetings!

Summer is waning, and autumn is on the way!  As we transition with the seasons, we are reminded that there is always something new on the horizon.  Before briefing you on some exciting upcoming events, we would like to introduce you to two new faces at TMU.  Josh Rowe joined us after completing an internship in the spring, and he is eager to explore the intersections of TMU's mission in philanthropy and his own interests in cultural exchange.  Alina Enggist has also recently joined the staff, coming from a graduate program where she focused on the interstices of art and anthropology.  She is looking forward to being inspired by the people and projects that TMU supports, and hopes to meet some of you at upcoming events.

Speaking of events, mark your calendars for the Creative Time Summit: Revolutions in Public Practice, which will present a platform for cultural producers from around the world to gather and "preach to a choir that has yet to exist."  In addition to all of the exciting projects and exchanges that TMU supports, we try to keep current on pressing issues.  In response to the devastation caused by the spate of wildfires in Russia this summer, TMU awarded a grant to Pacific Environment (PE) to support a pilot fire prevention program. More information on PE's work can be found in the spotlight story below.

Thank you for your continued interest and valued contributions!

Best wishes,
the TMU staff

In 1962, Ellen Stewart, Artistic Director/Founder of La MaMa, invited puppet artists from Korea to perform their production of Head Hunting by Pagoon Kang Wouk.  This began La MaMa's love affair with the form, and puppetry has been an integral part of La MaMa's artistic vision ever since.  Cheryl Henson and the International Festival of Puppet Theatre has contributed significantly to the continuing evolution of puppet theater at La MaMa and around the world.

Gregory Sholette (artist, writer, activist, academic, and educator) will lead a public discussion to engage with issues raised throughout the Summit.
Creative Time
The Creative Time Summit: Revolutions in Public Practice

October 9-10, 2010

The Creative Time Summit brings together socially engaged art practitioners from around the world to discuss how their projects address the pressing issues of our times.

Creative Time, an organization committed to fostering a culture of experimentation and change through boundary-crossing artistic practices, has developed the Summit as a platform to engage the public in cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural conversation about community, cultural production, and political engagement.  They have invited curators from different regions of the globe to report on emerging forms of socially engaged art.

Russian art activist group and TMU grantee, Chto delat/What is to be done will be? will be commenting on Plausible Art Worlds on Sunday afternoon.  This final session asks artists to describe their work in producing alternatives to the mainstream art world.

You may follow the Summit live via Livestream from anywhere in the world.  Or if you can, come to The Cooper Union School of Art, and meet the forty cultural producers who are this year's representatives of our creative times.

PE Fire SPOTLIGHT:
PACIFIC ENVIRONMENT

Pacific Environment has been working with partners in Russia to reduce agriculture burning, a practice that often leads to catastrophic forest fires and that releases black carbon, a significant climate forcer that is believed to cause increased rates of climate change by accelerating the melting of sea ice.  In recognition of Pacific Environment's efforts and in response to the heat wave in Russia this summer-which was the most intense the country has experienced in 130 years and led to some of the worst wildfires Russia has ever seen-TMU awarded a grant to Pacific Environment to support a pilot fire prevention program. TMU support will help Pacific Environment to work with their in-country partners to implement a series of pilot programs in Russia which will include training volunteer fire brigades; implementing public outreach campaigns; and purchasing firefighting, remote sensing, and mapping equipment.  Following implementation, the program will be evaluated and used as a model in other areas of the country.

Pacific Environment is a San Francisco-based nonprofit organization that protects the environment around the Pacific Rim by supporting grassroots activism, strengthening communities, and working to reform international policies.
