New CMC Foundation CEO Matt Spencer:

Dear CMC Supporters, As the College prepares for a wave of students returning and matriculating into its classrooms this fall, I am inspired to say thank you for all that each of you has done over the years --through the magic of philanthropy-- to enrich their student experience. Whether via support of CMC's capital campaigns, which have erected new buildings from Leadville to Rifle over the past few years, support of dynamic scholarship programs such as CMC-Edwards' HERO Fund, or annual investments in district-wide efforts like the
"No Barriers Fund"... you have made a difference! CMC does an incredible job of transitioning people, transcending community, and transforming lives and I am honored to serve as only the second CEO in the history of its philanthropic Foundation which generates so much of the funding for the College to endeavor in these areas. I want to publicly thank and acknowledge my predecessor Alexandra Yajko for her 33 years of service to the College and the Foundation, which has paved the way for so many, including myself, to enjoy and enhance the successes of CMC! -- Matt |

A Legacy of Love and Learning
Joyce & John Dunn
 |
Though Judy Green never thought of making this kind of gift before, when Jack Saunders, a member of Colorado Mountain College Foundation's Community Cabinet for the new Climax Molybdenum Leadership Center (CMLC) met with her and commented that she could make a small gift or even name a whole room in honor of someone, she took his words to heart; she immediately thought of her parents.
"What better way to leave a legacy to immortalize these two wonderful people," she thought. Joyce and John Dunn never finished college themselves, but they certainly encouraged Judy to get a good education. They never asked, "Are you going to college?" but, "Which college do you want to attend?" They were very happily married for 54 years and were great parents.
"My father was the most popular dad in the neighborhood," Judy said in a recent phone conversation. "He was mischievous, the life of the party and he always made up and sang parodies for all occasions. My mother sang beautifully as well." So, the photograph Judy chose to use for the room dedicated to the Dunns, on the Leadville campus, is her favorite from one of the family gatherings at a cousin's cottage in northern Michigan.
With plans to surprise her sister with the plaque on her next visit to Colorado, Judy knows she will be pleased. John, twelve years older than Joyce, died in 2006. But it was their mother's sudden and unexpected massive stroke and death, a little over a year ago, that made Judy want to turn her family's loss toward a way to put to good use some of the money her parents had so carefully saved. Judy's contribution to CMC became a poignant way for her to "give back to the college community that has given me meaningful work and a satisfying and kind network of support." And, by sharing her parents' story, their pride in her work as the Community Corporate Learning Manager at CMC, and the Dunn family's desire to foster education, Judy hopes that others who can make similar gifts to the College will do so as well. That's part of Judy Green's legacy. |

Timberline Analytical Lab (TAL)
Excerpted from an article by Suzie Romig, CMC October 2009
The new Timberline Analytical Lab (TAL), at the Leadville campus, is up and running and features an important piece of high-tech equipment that usually is found at research-oriented, four-year universities...an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer. This high-tech chemistry instrument measures multiple elements at low levels precisely, accurately and quickly. Before, CMC faculty and students who collected water and soil samples in the Leadville area often had to wait months to receive results form overworked outside laboratories. But, with this new piece of equipment, the analytical research capabilities at CMC have been greatly enhanced. For more info go to:

The Foundation's Aspen Glen Thank You event featured Glenwood Vaudeville Revue
In February, CMC Foundation and the Aspen Glen community created the Aspen Glen Scholar Fund --our first scholarship dedicated to helping students of the Roaring Fork Valley complete a BA or BS degree at CMC. To thank these community members for their vision and generosity, the Foundation recently hosted a special event.
Following a sampler of comic performances by talented actors from the Glenwood Vaudeville Revue, CMC President, Dr. Stan Jensen, gave an update on the status of BA / BS degrees at the College. CMC faculty and staff are now creating upper level courses to propose to the Colorado's Higher Learning Commission (HLC), for availability in fall 2011, including the areas of Business and Environmental Sustainability.
A visiting speaker, who was instrumental in encouraging CMC to expand its degree offerings, was former Florida Senator Don Sullivan, who gave a fascinating account of his successful efforts to promote 4-year degrees at community colleges in Florida. Lastly, the Foundation's new CEO, Matt Spencer, spoke about exciting new fundraising opportunities related to these advanced degrees. CMC greatly appreciates the support of all members of our college community: our neighbors, instructors, staff, students, board members and donors. Together, we are working to enable our students to become more skilled, better educated and increasingly self sufficient and productive members of our communities.
