Moped's Mileage Report
December 9, 2009
Volume V

Whether you're a holiday lover or a sour scrooge, you probably love to get the most for your money, and this year, being savvy about spending has been more important than ever.

This month's articles take a look at how to get the most mileage out of your video content, including how rethinking your approach to media development can help maximize your opportunities down the road.

Our recent work with new client WP Stewart, a global investment firm, is helping lengthen the life of an event they recently hosted.

And in Rewind, learn about our work with Queens College Hillel that helped capitalize on their existing assets, as well as how product testimonials can help drive more sales in entertaining ways.

So 'tis the season for getting value!  We wish you a safe and happy holiday season, and we'll see you in the new decade!

Moped Feature Article Multiplying Video's Value Over Time

A well-produced video has a much longer shelf life than most other media. With some careful planning beforehand, a video can attract and hold an audience long after it was created. Make sure your sponsors know what this means in terms of getting more bang for their buck.

For instance, consider the sponsor of a one-time event. Traditionally, once the event wrapped the direct benefit to the sponsor was considered essentially done. But now, that sponsor can receive a prominent producing credit on the event videos. Through video, the sponsor's name is intimately associated with the organization long after filming. Consider offering the sponsor a version they can use for their own purposes.

It also pays to think about maximizing value over time for your own organization as you prepare for the shoot. The more universal the content, the longer the shelf life. Consider thematic topics that can be covered within the same shoot period and distributed as separate segments. Eliminate references to specific dates and seasons, and avoid bringing in topical references that can be readily dated. Keep the clothing style neutral, avoiding outfits that are too fashion forward or too specific to one season.

The power of the moving picture has always been rooted in the sense it conveys that what the viewer is watching is happening now. No still medium can compare. Some careful planning beforehand will help you fully harness this unique power on the day of filming, and over time.

Moped Re-Think

10 Ideas for Re-Purposing Video Content

By Ashley Faison

So you set out to produce a video with a specific message and audience. Your video is now complete and it's awesome - everyone loves it! However, throughout the process of creating this fabulous video, several other themes were unveiled and now you have all this additional footage.

Hmm, now what? Do you throw it in a drawer and lock it away forever?  No, of course not!

At Moped, we are always thinking about maximizing video opportunities, now and for later down the road. Our goal is for you to get the maximum mileage out of footage you've invested in producing. So the following is a list of 10 ways to re-purpose current content, or to think about gathering during your next shoot:

1.    Video Blog Posts

2.    Behind-the-Scenes Interviews

3.    Commercials
(integrate text and graphics to augment message)

4.    Create staff bios

5.    Pull high quality stills from the footage for print media

6.    Explore new angles/audiences with recurring themes
(i.e., general marketing, donor or client development, staff and
       volunteer training)

7.    Mini-emailable messages

8.    Highlight Reel

9.    Incorporate still photography
(for a different look and feel)

10.  Montage of related quotes
(because who doesn't love a good montage...especially to
some good 80's music.  Just kidding!)

Where's Moped?

Music has long since been associated with spreading positive messages, and this year is no different.  At mtvU's 2009 Woodie Awards, artists were celebrated for doing good around the world.  We edited the Good Woodie awards package; check out who wins!

MMG Mardiks is creating promotional content for one of its Long Island City hotel properties, and we were there to capture the beauty shots.

We're also welcoming global investment firm WP Stewart to the Moped Mix.  Recently they hosted their annual conference and wanted to maximize use of the content beyond the event.  We created a multimedia player for their website and edited their presentations to function as if you were there the first time.
Moped Rewind
THIS MONTH IN MOPED HISTORY
December 2008

Queens College Hillel reached out to us after hearing from other multimedia companies that budget limitations were too... well, limiting.  So how can you get a lot with a little?  We knew we didn't have to shoot for days to get their story told.  By taking a look at their existing assets, taking advantage of an upcoming event where people would be available for interviews, and creating a thematic framework for delivering their message, we were able to reduce production to a half-day shoot.  The final segment conveys a strong sense of what their mission and impact are, and has a strong call to action at the end.  Since then, the fundraising leverage they've been able to create from the video has turned this piece into a gift that keeps on giving!

Speaking of stories that keep on giving, if you're a book lover, you'll love the Why I Read segments we edited for the Barnes & Noble website in collaboration with Crossborders last year.  Check out how their testimonies connect their readers, and help drive traffic to the books mentioned in each piece.
