HOLIDAZE!

As we write this newsletter, we are just recuperating from Halloween and we are beginning our grocery list for Thanksgiving. And, take a deep breath...that means that Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa are just around the corner. With that thought, the REAL panic sets in. In spite of good intentions last January, if you are like us, you didn't start making gifts months ago and you didn't take advantage of all those post-season sales to stock up for next year.

To help you get started on quick-to-make, fun-to-give projects we've included two FREE patterns for chunky mittens made in either knit or crochet. With projects like this you'll be able to quickly check off a few of those must-make gifts.

We've also included info on felting, one of this year's fun crazes. Follow the link to Maggie Pace, one of K&CT's experts for the 4-1-1 on this nifty craft, then use the discount coupon on the bottom of the newsletter to make Maggie's original design for a gorgeous felted holiday wreath.

So, relax, have fun and tap into your creativity during this holiday season.

Full of Felt
Do you know the difference between felting and fulling? Often the terms are used interchangeably, but according to Wikipedia "Knitted woolen garments which shrink in a hot machine wash can be said to have felted but, more accurately, they have been "fulled". Felting differs from fulling in the sense that fulling is done to fabric whereas felting is done to fibers that are not in fabric form." Check out this link to Fulling in Wikipedia. The pictures and descriptions on how it was done in the past are worth the time!

Whether you call it fulling or felting, it is fun to do (when you do it on purpose)! The Knit and Crochet Today PBS Maggie PaceTV program is lucky to have an expert knitter and felter, Maggie Pace. This prolific designer has written two felting books plus she hosts Pick Up Sticks, a popular website that includes info on felting basics and creative kits that will definitely make you want to give this craft a try.

It's OK to Knit Out.
The verdict is in. It's OK to knit (or crochet) in public. A recent question sent to "Ask Amy", the syndicated columnist, asked if it was OK to knit while visiting with friends. The writer, "Knit Wit in California", assured Amy that she was knitting a simple project and was able to participate even though her hands were busy. Knit Wit's un-enlightened husband thought it was rude to knit while others were talking, eating, and drinking.

Amy's Answer: "I don't think it's rude to knit in the presence of others. In fact, the world would be a more congenial place if more people laid aside their hand-held devices and picked up needles and yarn."

Now who's the nit-wit?
