Heads Up on Hat Sizes. Not sure how big to make your hat? Do you know a few pin heads or fat heads? The beauty of knitted and crocheted hats is that the natural give will accommodate most heads. To measure heads accurately, place a tape measure across the forehead about midway between eyebrows and hairline. Measure around the full circumference of the head. Keep the tape snug against the head. Usually a difference of one inch more or less than the average can be accommodated by the natural give of the hat. If the difference is greater, the easiest way to adjust the size is by changing needle size in the fitted part of the hat. Standard head circumferences are provided by www.yarnstandards.com.
