E-Challenge

News from the Tarrant Baptist Association
Greetings!

The following is a letter from Mr. Walter Dansby, Superintendent of the Fort Worth Independent School District.  As you are aware, Tarrant Baptist Association has been working with the Fort Worth ISD for some time. We are also supporting TarrantNet's effort to provide volunteers to work with 1st grade students across the ISD to be sure each one knows how to read prior to finishing the 1st grade (Read2Win). I learned yesterday that there are are 89 elementary schools. One elementary school in my neighborhood, had 48% of their 1st graders who could not pass the reading assessment at the end of the 1st grade. In one school this represented 24 students. Twelve folks giving one hour a week could change these children's future for life.

We can made a difference. What if we all joined together and gave 30 minutes to one hour each week to work with 1 or 2 students. The prison system builds new prisons based on the reading level of 4th graders. We don't want Tarrant County schools to add to these numbers. Pray and ask God what He wants you to do.

Dear Pastor,

The Fort Worth ISD and Tarrant Net are partnering to address literacy in our elementary schools. The District supports Tarrant NET's Read2Win Adopt-A-School Literacy Campaign and we hope you will join us in this effort.

Research shows that students who work with volunteer tutors are likely to earn higher scores on assessments related to letters and words, oral fluency, and writing.

Please join me and Tarrant NET on Thursday, June 14 at 5:30 p.m. at the Fort Worth ISD's Board Conference Room located at 2903 Shotts St. to learn more about this important program and how you can get involved and change the life of a child.

If you have questions about the program and to RSVP, please contact Haily Summerford at 817-814-2969 or via email at haily.summerford@fwisd.org.

I hope you will plan to attend and become a part of our "Singleness of Purpose"in furthering the goals of the District and our students.

Sincerely,

Walter Dansby

Inspiration Points

The TBA directors attended excellent continuing education training in Arlington last week.  Legacy Leadership is about living your legacy.  It is about turning vision into everything you do every day.

The reality is that we cannot not influence.  The question is how we will influence others.  Legacy leaders guide others into a better future-into being better, doing better, and leading better.  Intentionally influencing for selfless positive relationships and growth is Legacy Leadership.

            There are five legacy practices:

  • Holder of Vision and Values-This is about direction and commitment.  It's how we get started toward living our legacy.
  • Creator of Collaboration and Innovation-This is about the environment of productive working relationships.  It's how we create the environment for living our legacy.
  • Influencer of Inspiration and Leadership-This is about connecting, which as at the heart of relationships.  It's how we move people forward into a preferred future.
  • Advocator of Differences and Community-This is about distinction and inclusion.  It's how we make a whole from the various parts.
  • Calibrator of Responsibility and Accountability-This is about execution and performance.  It's how we go about getting things done right.

Each of the legacy practices has three components: one part being and two parts doing.  The first word in each title is the being part of that leadership practice.  Legacy resides in who a person is first and what they do second.

Legacy Leadership is a great tool for assessing your personal leadership development.  It then provides you with an understanding of what tools are required to continue growing and developing your leadership skills and abilities.  The Legacy Leadership book ($25 from Amazon) provides the best personal development guide I've seen in a resource like this.  Additional resources are available in course materials delivered in a workshop setting.

The Legacy Leadership logo is five squares formed in the shape of a cross with Influencer of Inspiration and Leadership at the heart.  Each square is a different color which has its own meaning.  That square at the heart is red.  The women who wrote this material did so for professional executive coaches.  Their deep roots in evangelical Christianity and education shine through this secular work.

We will incorporate Legacy Leadership in our various training offerings in the future.  We can also deliver this material in one or two-day settings with your church staff and leadership.

We in Tarrant Baptist Association have inherited a powerful legacy from those who've gone before us.  Let's live the legacy we want those who come behind us to receive.

Two Freedom Schools begin this summer

Last summer a group of 15, which included several Tarrant Association staff members, pastors, Fort Worth ISD administrators, principals and city leader, traveled to Houston to tour four Freedom Schools. We wanted to determine by experiencing first hand if these schools would help students in Fort Worth. We were impressed and started making plans to have Freedom Schools in Fort Worth. Through a grant from AT&T and a $20,000 gift from the Baptist General Convention of Texas, two schools will be held this summer.

The two locations are Rising Star Baptist Church and Trimble Tech High School. They will be held June 18 through July 27.

The CDF Freedom Schools program provides summer and after-school enrichment that helps children fall in love with reading, increases their self-esteem, and generates more positive attitudes toward learning. Children are taught using a model curriculum that supports children and families around five essential components: high quality academic enrichment; parent and family involvement; civic engagement and social action; intergenerational leadership development; and nutrition, health and mental health.

Together, we can all make a huge impact in the lives of children and their families. If your church might be interested in providing a Freedom School in your community, contact Dr. Danna Diaz at danna.diaz@fwisd.org to schedule a time to tour one of the above Freedom School sites this summer.

Equipping the Saints 101--Strategies for Preventing Violence & Exploitation in the Church

June 12th or 21st

Registration 9am-10am

10am-10:50am:  Child & Youth Exploitation Patterns and Prevention
This hour will address the area of child and youth exploitation, how molesters gain access and trust of both the victims and the families, and strategies to prevent this from occurring.  What about background checks, do they really work?  How often should they be done? What is the standard three-fold approach of most plaintiff attorneys when seeking to prove negligence in these cases?  What legal precedents have already been set?  Special emphasis will be placed on the documentation process that should accompany any and all such initiatives in the church to mitigate risks and thwart any claims of potential "negligence."

11am-11:50am: Staff & Congregational Safety

This hour will address threats that can occur within the church either from members, family members or community members when "unknown dramas" find their way into the church.  Do you have a "security team" at your church?  Does their training validate their title?  How have they been trained and "who" did their training?  Has their training been documented and on-file?  What are the areas of physical vulnerability in your facility and what have you done to address them?  In addition, safety concerns on domestic and foreign outreach/missions will be addressed as well as the documentation process that should precede such trips and projects.

12noon-1pm  LUNCH IS SERVED

1pm-1:50pm:  Turning Requirements into Opportunity
This hour will address the opportunity that exists when the church reaches beyond its four walls and invites its community to participate in its efforts and initiatives.  You've heard of "health fairs" but what about "safety fairs"?  How do you reach out with a proactive message to your congregation versus a reactive message?  What is the unspoken message you are also sending out to those in your congregation with less than noble objectives?  This hour will address proactive strategies that can be used to reach outside of your church and into your community, while also documenting the process.

2pm-2:50pm: Filling Your Pews by Filling Their Needs

This final hour is a "bonus" with guest speaker, Scott Schilling, Christian author and speaker who will address how to establish and maintain rapport with those God has called you to serve.  He will explore how to build rapport quickly, gain and retain more members, and learn to create a more caring environment resulting in increased financial and ministry support. Whether you are a natural-born speaker, or a trained speaker, Scott's "communication refresh" will enhance your ability to communicate your calling more effectively.

3pm - Closing and distribution of the following

  1. Certificates of Completion
  2. Jeff's book, Power Proverbs for Personal Defense

Rudy Camacho Receives Honorary Doctorate
Rudy Camacho, who has made it possible for scores of others to earn college diplomas, received one for himself May 12 when Baptist University of the Américas awarded him an honorary Doctor of Christian Education degree. Camacho, a leading lay leader in Tarrant Baptist Association and a long-time member of Gambrell Baptist Church, was awarded an honorary Doctor of  Christian Education degree by BUA.  Camacho was recognized, Maciel said, because the university wanted to honor him "as a champion for active lay involvement in Texas Baptist life, a champion for making the BGCT a fellowship committed to working as brothers across cultural barriers, a champion for Hispanic education and a champion for changing our world." The elder Baptist statesman said he had never expected such an honor and vowed to "carry the standard of this University wherever I go" to inform others of the unique role the school plays in preparing leaders to meet the spiritual needs of the growing Hispanic population of Texas.  In addition to being elected president of the Hispanic Convencion and first vice president of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, he served 23 years as a member of the BGCT Executive Board, 13 years on as a trustee for his alma mater Howard Payne University and on the advisory board of Truett Seminary for five years.

Mission Opportunities

Portland and Gregory, TX (near Corpus Christi) experienced major flooding.  The elderly and the uninsured need your help!

Pastors,  Mark Miller, Oak Ridge Baptist Church and Ron Earley, FBC Portland along with Danny Dunham of Blanco Association and Anson Nash of Corpus Christi Association are working hard to assist in the recovery of massive flooding in the evening of April 17. The water was up to 2 feet in some homes.   The areas hit the hardest are low income and elderly residents.  These are areas where there are inadequate drainage systems. A good number of homes were damaged or destroyed.

Texas Baptist Men spent two weeks in Gregory and Portland doing clean out on homes.  The homes are now ready to be repaired.  This is where Texas Baptist Disaster Recovery will be helpful.

We need skilled and unskilled volunteers who would be willing to spend a week near the Texas coast this summer and work to assist these who have no means to repair or rebuild their homes.

Churches will house volunteers through the summer. The church kitchen will be provided for groups to prepare own meals.

Anson Nash will be serving as the contact person.  You may contact Anson, Corpus Christi Baptist Association Director o f Missions at  361-853-2555 or Contact Marla Bearden at 214-537- 7358  or email at  marla.bearden@texasbaptists.org if your church might be interested in assisting.

Harvest America with Greg Laurie

August 26th 2012

"One Day.... One Church... One Message...."

What if on One Day, churches from all over the nation brought in the Harvest Crusade and streamed it live right into their church? At last year's Harvest, individuals watched the live stream broadcast from every state of the union and 32 countries around the world! Now, with HD-quality video available through Internet streaming and satellite, people could fill churches, theaters, coffee houses, and living rooms, linking together as One Church in thousands of locations.

For what purpose? One Message! The only message that can save a soul-the simple proclamation of the gospel, which will be given from a gifted evangelist, Greg Laurie.

And if this is repeated over the next three years, we could conservatively see more than five million people in live-stream events and effectively see some 500,000 professions of faith! That's more than we've seen in our 22-year history of Harvest Crusades!

Will you consider joining hundreds of other churches across America on August 26 as we seek to bring hope to a nation? From promotions to the follow-up process, this website will provide churches and individuals with all the tools and resources needed to host a successful evangelistic event for your community, whether you host it at your church, a neutral venue, or in your living room.

For more information and to register your church please go to http://danielsouthernmanagement.com then the Harvest America Crusade Link.
