Greetings! |
Fort Worth ISD seeks help from churches
Fort Worth Independent School District Superintendent Walter Dansby recently met with leaders from the Tarrant Baptist Association and shared his heart about the school district. He said, "Please encourage pastors to talk with their congregations about the importance of parents being involved in the schools." He also said, "We need pastors and church leaders to talk about the importance of education to the children and parents in their congregations." He shared about how teachers are doing all they can to encourage children to learn, but many times when children get home they are deflated and have no support.
The Texas Department of Criminal Justice bases their need for more prisons on the reading level of 3rd grade students in Texas. When student don't know how to read, they get discouraged and drop out of school as they get into middle and high school.
During the meeting with Mr. Dansby, we obtained maps of all the locations of elementary, middle and high schools in the FWISD. We also received a list of all the adopted schools. We know that many of the Tarrant Baptist churches are partnering with neighbor schools and are not listed on the official list from the district. Please email us at frontdesk@tarrantbaptist.org to let us know the schools your church is partnering with and some of the kinds of things you are doing there. We want to make sure that all of the 142 campuses in the FWISD have a church actively participating on their campus.
Not only do we want to know about the FWISD, but we want to be sure we are strategically reaching all 486 schools in Tarrant County. Below is the number of schools in each district. Please pray about how God wants you to be involved. For more information on ways you can become involved, contact Becky Biser at becky@tarrantbaptist.org.
- Arlington ISD - 73 schools
- Azle ISD - 10 schools
- Birdville ISD - 31 schools
- Crowley ISD - 23 schools
- Eagle Mountain-Saginaw ISD - 25 schools ( plus a new HS to open this fall)
- Everman ISD - 8 schools
- Fort Worth ISD - 142
- Grapevine-Colleyville ISD - 21 schools
- HEB ISD - 38 schools
- Keller ISD - 40 schools
- Kennedale ISD - 6 schools

Message from Dr. Bowman |
Our staff and some of our pastors attended two important meetings this week regarding community transformation involving the Fort Worth Independent School District.
We met with the new superintendent of the Fort Worth ISD, Mr. Walter Dansby. He is eager to involve our churches in the work of the schools. He would like for churches and businesses to work together to show support for public education.
We also met with a group of evangelical pastors in southwest Fort Worth who are interested in creating a local TarrantNet affiliate. They are looking for a big win that they can cooperate on. Their target is the public school campuses in their area.
Volunteers from the churches will prayer walk campuses, provide gifts for teachers, serve as PTA, mentor students, and provide Kids' Hope programming after school. All of our churches have people who can serve in one or more of these ways.
Mr. Dansby specifically requested that our churches check on students to make sure they are getting their schoolwork done. Kids need accountability from us that they should be getting at home, but in many cases are not.
We had over forty people in our church in Baytown who worked for one of the local school districts. At the beginning of the school year we recruited prayer partners for each of those school employees. We recruited prayer teams for each campus. Volunteers prayer walked each campus. Members served the different campuses by making copies and doing other odd jobs for teachers and front office personnel.
What other ideas do you have regarding ministering to our communities through the public schools? How is your church serving the schools in your area? Let's put our heads together and find ways to be the church in the schools. This will open doors for evangelism that will remain closed otherwise.
Church Unique by Will Mancini has a chapter about what he calls the Kingdom Concept. The first part of the Kingdom Concept is the Local Predicament. This refers to the top three characteristics of the community surrounding your church. This provides your church with unique opportunities for ministry. What can your church do to drive back the darkness in your community? What can your church do to serve your community in the name of Jesus Christ?
Pray for our schools,
David

Venezuela Partnership Grows |
A group of five leaders recently returned from Venezuela after spending 10 days in which they worked with over 500 Venezuelans. The partnership included Tarrant's re:FOCUS leadership journey, life coach training, preaching at three churches, leading a revival, and encouragement. During the recent trip over 250 leaders from the La Fe Baptist Church in Maracaibo participated in life coach training by the Tarrant team, thirty-six pastors spent four intensive days in weeks 1, 2, and 3 of the re:FOCUS journey, and over 200 pastors and leaders participated in coach training during the Venezuelan Baptist National Convention.
The Venezuelans shared more needs as t he group worked with them. Plans are now being made to send a team to train Vacation Bible School and Sunday School leaders. They also requested help with Camp Carabobo, which is their national encampment. They would like advice on other activities for campers, soil testing on crops that can be planted on unused portions of camp property, and requested building
teams to come and help build more facilities. An assessment team is being assembled to go and learn more about how we can assist.
The cost to send these two teams to Venezuela will be about $10,000. Please pray that funds will be provided to make this possible.
