| Greetings! |
What kind of leader are you?
If you are like me, you have read numerous books on leadership. Through the pages of each one, I come away with good insights. In Wesley Shotwell's, "The Power of Being a Servant," Shotwell says the most important thing he has learned is, you cannot lead alone. You have to work with others. He goes on to say that groups tend to take on the personality of the leader. If the leader is a peacemaker, the group tends to be peaceful. If the leader is a servant, the group will serve.
Aubrey Malphurs and Will Mancini in "Building Leaders" talk about the importance of building a leadership culture which involves an interrelationship between values, thoughts, attitudes and actions. Values are caught, attitudes rub off, and behaviors are modeled and imitated. Jesus' strategy to reach the world was focused on a leadership community of twelve men. His primary concern was reproducing patterns of thinking and behavior consistent with his character and kingdom living.
John Maxwell in "The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership" states that the people's capacity to achieve is determined by their leader's ability to empower. When a leader can't or won't empower others, he creates barriers within the organization that people cannot overcome. To those leaders who have self-confidence, change is a stimulus because they believe one person can make a difference and influence what goes on around them. These people are the doers and motivators. They are also the empowers.
What kind of leader are you? The Bible tells us to go and make disciples. How are you being a disciple-making leader? God has been challenging me to make disciples everywhere I go and in everything I do. I am not there yet, but I am being intentional. This has become my main goal in every meeting and in every encounter I have with people. What would happen if every believer did this? What might this look like for you in your place of business? In your church?

TBA Staff Anniversaries
|
Anniversaries
Becky Biser celebrated her 30th year with Tarrant Baptist Association on February 1st. Becky is the Director of Leadership Development providing training and leadership development seminars. She and her husband, Tim, are active members at University Baptist Church in Ft. Worth Texas. She
has two grown sons and is expecting her first grandchild in June.
Betty Alvarado celebrated six years with TBA on January 30th as a receptionist
and ministry assistant. Betty and her husband Nick are active members of South Hills Baptist Church. She is also expecting her first grandchild this summer.

Message from the Director
|
I heard a senior leader in a large enterprise say that it is not possible to work as friends in close leadership positions. His reasoning was that he as the senior leader might have to fire one of his close subordinates and that would end the friendship. Therefore, he could not have friends as his close associates. How sad.
I made the rounds to meet associational leaders when I become the congregational strategist for this area. Two of the people who received me most warmly were Becky Biser and Jay Harris. They took time out of their busy days to welcome me to the area and to help me get to know more about Tarrant Association.
I've had the privilege of getting to know the staff better over the last few years. My appreciation of them has grown significantly in that time. My admiration for them has multiplied since joining the team here at TBA last October. I wish you could know all they do to add value to pastors, staff members, lay leaders, and churches. We need a publicist to adequately communicate the amount of work they do.
Gary is the newest director. He celebrated ten years on the TBA staff in January. He arrives early and stays late most days. He coaches, consults, and serves as a wise advisor to many, including me. He is endlessly patient and wonderfully kind. He is the quietest of our directors, but he is not silent. Becky enjoys throwing things at him. He is efficient and effective. We are fortunate to have him.
Jay, aka Lefty, celebrated twelve years on staff last month. He loves working with church planters and new church starts. There aren't many men I know who are his equal when it comes to prayer. I'm not sure if he ever sleeps. He prays early, late, and without ceasing. You have a faithful prayer partner in him whether you realize it or not. Jay's thoughts are works of art. Ask to see some of his mind maps and you will be impressed.
Becky is the senior staff member. Please notice how skillfully I avoided all references to age. Becky celebrates thirty years on staff with TBA this month. Thirty years! That has to be a record of some kind. Becky knows everyone. Everyone knows, and loves, Becky. We were at the TarrantNet lunch recently when Mayor Betsy Price spoke. Before we left that day Becky and Mayor Betsy were cheek to cheek posing for the camera. I don't have to wander far to find out about people, places, or things related to the association. Becky is a walking encyclopedia of TBA information.
Celebrate these staff members with me. They make us all look good. They make us all better. They serve God with integrity of heart and skillful hands. I am proud to call them friends.
Life's too short to work with people you don't like. You are blessed if you work with people you love. I am the most blessed man in ministry. We are the most blessed association in Baptist life.
Celebrate work done well over a good, long time,
David
