Wilson will begin by discussing the history of our universe, the laws of physics, and key aspects of modern cosmology. Attendees will learn why the discovery of an accelerating universe is startling and significant. Wilson will also discuss two of the biggest mysteries of astronomy: the presence of unseen dark matter and repulsive gravity in the form of dark energy. Attendees will learn what is known about these cosmological forces and how they interact with our universe today as well as how their interaction has changed through time. The Greater Palm Springs Pride celebrates its 25th Anniversary, November 5-6, 2011, with a two-day festival in Palm Springs.  The 2011 theme, "Justice Today. Equality Forever!" pays tribute to the progress achieved toward equality while also serving as a reminder that the struggle for equal rights for all individuals continues. Festival highlights include: US Bank Main stage featuring live entertainment and over twenty performances, over 100 exhibitors and non-profit organizations, farmer's market, food and beverage vendors.

Modern Art: Behind the Mask

The City of Rancho Mirage Public Library will be hosting a stimulating and relevant discussion on art and artists, delivered by Robert Brasier, Deputy Director of Education for the Palm Springs Art Museum. Admission to Modern Art: Behind the Mask is free and open to the public.
 
In this series' second lecture, entitled The Seduction of Impressionism, Robert Brasier discusses Impressionism and how the impressionists addressed their society, culture, and selves in passionate terms and how they set the stage for radical changes in future art.

 Cathedral City: Nothing inspires appreciation for the sacrifices U.S. military personnel have made on behalf of democracy and freedom than a visit to the annual Healing Field in Patriot Park. Every year, the Cathedral City Rotary Club transforms the park into a sea of American flags; each representing one hometown hero. Indian Wells: The City of Indian Wells will hold its annual Veterans Day Ceremony under the white tent at the Eisenhower Walk of Honor adjacent to City Hall.  The one-hour tribute beginning at 10 a.m. features live performances and a special keynote speaker.Click here for more details

 

Indio: The Indio Performing Arts Center (IPAC) presents a special Veterans Day show, GI Jukebox! A Stage Door Canteen, at 7 p.m. featuring 1940s musical numbers spanning big band, Latin and swing. La Quinta: The City of La Quinta is slated to hold its annual Veterans Day Tribute at 11 a.m. at the La Quinta Civic Center Campus. The commemoration includes music and refreshments.  Click here for more details  Veterans

 

Palm Desert: If you happen to be in Greater Palm Springs on November 8, the City of Palm Desert is sponsoring a Pre-Veterans Day Concert in the Park featuring the U.S. Navy Band from Washington, D.C. The concert takes place at the scenic Civic Center Park amphitheatre adjacent to Palm Desert City Hall. Admission is free.  Click here for more details

 

Palm Springs: Honoring all who have served, the 15th Annual Palm Springs Veterans Day Parade starts in downtown Palm Springs at 3:30 p.m. at the corner of Palm Canyon Drive and Ramon and heads northbound to Alejo Road. Festivities include a post-parade concert featuring the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Band from Twentynine Palms followed by a fireworks finale.  Click here for more details

Art Affaire Browse through jewelry, ceramics, paintings, sculptures and other works of art from very talented, award-winning and local artists. And if you're a jazz fan, you're in luck! Smooth jazz bands will play live on the main stage both Saturday and Sunday.

 

The beneficiary for the event is the College of Desert's Walter N. Marks Center for the Arts. The Walter N. Marks Center for the Arts is responsible for educating its students, staff and community about the arts. Enjoy Native American dancing, drum contests, peon games and bird singing. Event visitors can also join dancers in the arena during selected times to participate in a non-competitive intertribal dance.

 

Savor delicious Native American foods, including Indian fry bread, and browse through vendor booths to shop for hand-made jewelry, dream catchers and other Native American arts and crafts. 

 

Be sure to stay for the Grand Entry - which takes place on all three days of the event - to see all of the tribes come together with a dance procession to kick off the competitions.
