DAILY DOSE: Top Five Nutraceuticals to Keep You Healthy Over the Holiday Season

Top recommendations revisited - from our Wellness Specialist Jaana Tubby.

1. Digestive Enzymes...for those occasions when you you're not sure what is in the festive foods you're eating (and also those where you ate too much)!
Taking digestive enzymes helps your body efficiently digest your food. This can alleviate occasional digestion-related discomforts such as indigestion, heartburn, irregularity, gas, and bloating. (All common issues during the holidays.)

2. Omega-3 and Vitamin D...to brighten your spirits and keep you merry all season long.
With so much activity and emotion this time of year, it is easy to find yourself feeling a little cranky or down in the dumps. Research has shown that both essential fatty acids (omega-3/fish oil) and vitamin D may lift spirits and relieve mood disorders. Listen to your favorite carols for an extra boost.

3. Milk Thistle...for those evenings filled with too much eggnog.
Milk thistle enhances liver functioning by protecting the liver against toxins and helping the liver repair damaged cells and regenerate new ones. Since milk thistle helps detoxify the body it's key for holiday festivities that lead to an over-indulgence of alcohol.

4. Vitamin C and Zinc...to keep your immune system strong and colds and flu bugs at bay.
A combination of vitamin C and zinc helps ward off the flu and keeps cold symptoms in check.Take them daily to keep your immune system in top shape and free from the grips of any germs floating through the cold air, around the crowded malls, or in the punch at office gatherings. And keep taking them even if you do catch something to prevent viruses from multiplying and to help you feel better quickly.

5. Rescue Remedy and Lavender...for the inevitable stresses - from crowded stores to noisy parties to visits from your mother-in-law.
To find relaxation and calm in the midst of a season of stresses, add some lavender oil to your bath water or place a drop on your forehead: the scent has been proven to work wonders. For instant calm in a crisis (big or small), try Rescue Remedy - a blend of five different flowers known to bring immediate relief to any situation. (You can even get Rescue Remedy for children and pets - it's natural, safe and has no side effects.)

Happy holidays to all! This time of year is always stressful for one reason or another but it is also a wonderful time to reflect and be thankful for our blessings. I like to take time during the holiday
season to gather with friends and continue traditions we have developed over the years. We all tend to
become "caught up" in the lists of things to do and forget what is truly important in our lives. I hope you will all find some time to enjoy and embrace the true meaning of the season.

Progesterone is the next hormone on my list to talk about this month. Progesterone is necessary for
fertility and pregnancy during our reproductive years. The balance of progesterone and estrogen
in a woman's body is very important, as an imbalance can cause symptoms of PMS and menopause.
Progesterone decreases the risk of endometrial cancer, stabilizes blood sugar, increases energy and sex
drive and enhances mood. Progesterone is the first hormone to decline, in the mid 30s, and especially
during peri-menopause. When this happens one may notice anxiety, poor sleep, mood swings, hot
flashes, mid-abdominal weight gain, and headaches.

Giving progesterone in the luteal phase, the last two weeks of your cycle, can help decrease some of
these symptoms and regulate cycles. This can be found over the counter as a cream or compounded
into a capsule, rapid dissolve tablet, troche, or cream. (The compounded forms require a prescription.)
It is very important to give a bio-identical progesterone, which is derived from wild yam or soy, verses a synthetic progestin. Progestins are very different from natural progesterone and do not reproduce the
actions of natural progesterone. Progestins can negate the beneficial effects of estrogen causing spasms of the arteries and increasing the risk of heart disease.

Once a woman is menopausal, she needs to take estrogen and progesterone to achieve the desired
benefits of taking hormone replacement therapy. The goal of hormone replacement therapy is to both
alleviate symptoms and prevent disease. Both estrogen and progesterone play a vital role in achieving
this goal.

Wishing you all peace and happiness,
Brenda

FESTIVE RECIPES: To Keep Your Energy Up This Season

There is often no month more packed with gatherings, events, activities, and of course, food! Enjoy the dishes of the season - and the never-ending array of to-dos - without losing steam. Keep moving with one of these treats:

Sausage, Fontina, and Bell Pepper Strata
Eggs are a complete protein and great source of energy. This dish is easy, quick, and perfect for wowing family and guests on Christmas morning. Use 2% milk instead of cream for a healthier version and consider making the night before. Just keep it in the fridge until you are ready to bake the next morning.

Almonds are a great nut to snack on. They are packed with good fats, which help you stay full; fiber, and nutrients like selenium, vitamin E, and omega-3s. Turn them into Cinnamon Roasted Almonds and you've got the perfect snack for your daily dash and the dessert table!

A few squares of dark chocolate can boost both energy and mood. (Caffeine is at work, along with another stimulant called theobromine.) Break a piece off of a dark chocolate bar to re-energize or whip up this decadent recipe for Dark Chocolate Espresso Cookies.
