Greetings!
"Listen! The wind is rising, and the air is wild with leaves,
we have had our summer evenings, now for October eves!"
- Humbert Wolfe
Happy October!
There is something truly special about the colors this time of year. As the leaves turn from green to orange, red, and yellow, and then float and scatter into our yards, we are reminded of what health in nature looks like. It has us thinking about supporting your health this season.
We have a great event coming up next week on Beating Breast Cancer and interviews with two of the panelists in this month's newsletter. Learn more about diagnosis from Dr. Suzanne Hoekstra and how to eat for prevention from Joan Lavery-McLaughlin. We also have a new diabetes event for November that we're excited to tell you about.
Plus, Brenda shares insights on treating hormone imbalances, we share our Top Three news tidbits, and PeRx lets you in on some delicious new treats. We hope you enjoy both the colors of the season and our October content.

DAILY DOSE: "Eat More Veggies - Your Grandmother Was Right"Joan Lavery-McLaughlin, RD, LD (Joanie) - is a nutritionist in the Oncology Department at Mercy Hospital. She's also one of the panelists in our upcoming Beating Breast Cancer event. We spoke with Joanie in advance of the event and she had a lot of great insights on recognizing the value in "real food" and how the right kind of eating can support cancer prevention. We wanted to share our talk with you:
What do you do in your role as an oncology nutritionist?
I worked as a private chef before I became a cancer dietitian. Now I've been working in oncology for three years and in clinical nutrition at Mercy for two and a half. I work with cancer patients on nutrition and lifestyle. I believe in the holistic approach and getting people to look at the whole picture - at their relationship between food and health. What are you eating? What kinds of information are you sending your genes through eating? Our diet can do a lot as far as turning our genes on and off. I like to address all the inhibiting factors that prevent people from making good food choices.
What do you see as the biggest obstacle to eating properly?
We've forgotten our connection to food and we must return to it. Your fork and spoon are really powerful. I work to help make people more aware of what they eat. Every time you eat, you are setting off a whole cascade of hormones. The question is, are the impacts good or bad?
How can people begin to think about eating for prevention?
One the most important things, I think, is the understanding the value of a vegetable diet. According to the American Cancer Society, one third of all cancers are diet related. And our Western diets in particular lead to an increased risk for disease and cancer. That's why it's really important to eat real food--plant-based food. There is such good stuff in plants for us.
What other advice do you share with patients?
- Eat more veggies - your grandmother was right! - Eat foods your grandparents will recognize - Realize that not all fats are bad; there is a difference between the two - Stick to the periphery of the grocery store or the Farmer's Market - You don't need a science degree to read a nutrition label - should be ingredients you understand - If you're going to eat an animal, eat an animal that has eaten well itself - Begin to see the value in plants and real food.
What do you enjoy most about working on the Mercy Breast Care Specialists team?
The team at Mercy is such a phenomenal group. I love my job. It's not always a happy job but everyone has a story to tell and a lesson to learn. At Mercy we all work to address the whole person and to offer great medical care and support. The smaller team affords us that opportunity and I am lucky to be a part of it.

EVENT: Beating Breast Cancer - Interview with Dr. Hoekstra
PANEL OF MERCY HOSPITAL EXPERTS | OCTOBER 18 | 6:30 p.m.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States and it kills more women in our country than any cancer except lung cancer. Over 230,000 women were diagnosed with the disease in 2011 according to the American Cancer Society. This month, come hear a panel of experts from Mercy Hospital speak on all aspects of beating breast cancer - from lifestyle prevention tips to identifying risk factors to getting through treatment. The panel includes:

Suzanne Hoekstra, MD FACS - Breast Surgeon-Breast Care Specialists of Maine - Mercy Hospital Roger Inhorn MD, PhD - Oncologist - Mercy Hospital Dana Greer, RN - Clinical Trials and Genetic Testing - Oncology Dept - Mercy Hospital
Joan Lavery-McLaughlin, RD, LD - Nutritionist - Oncology Department - Mercy Hospital
The Breast Care Specialists of Maine at Mercy Hospital have been recognized as a leading national breast care center and their award-winning staff are dedicated to supporting individuals with breast health concerns. In addition to Joan Lavery-McLaughlin (see above) we spoke with Dr. Suzanne Hoekstra about her position at Mercy and what she'll focus on for the event.
What is your role on the Mercy team?
I am a breast surgeon. Anyone with breast concerns we will evaluate and my role is to talk with women early in the process - either before diagnosis or immediately after. My main job is to tell patients what they have and to formulate a plan for how to go about treating it. Surgery is often the next step.
Do you enjoy being a part of the Mercy team?
Maybe not quite since I was a little girl but ever since my surgery training in the mid-90s I'd always wanted to focus on this area. I'm just so happy that I get to do that on this team and to help provide the best care for patients in Maine.
What will you touch on during the ABD event?
I will talk about the state of breast cancer - in particular in Maine vs. nationally. I will talk about how many are being diagnosed with the disease, what's out there for diagnosis, and how we're improving our treatment.
What has your work with breast cancer over the years taught you about the importance of prevention?
One of the most important thing women can do is to continue to get checked. Sometimes women have a fear of having breast cancer and it makes them not check their breasts for lumps, or receive a mammogram. But you shouldn't wait. If breast cancer should be diagnosed - it should be done early. I tell women it's a very common disease. One in eight women have it and even if you do everything right, it could still happen. It is very treatable and curable. We've made huge strides in the disease and having breast cancer is not a death sentence.
And what advice do you have for women receiving a breast cancer diagnosis?
Two things: 1. Be encouraged - more and more women are surviving this all the time. And 2. Don't rush into decisions of what next. Take the time to make the right decision for you - there is no rush or emergency. If you need a week or more, take that time.

FROM OUR TEAM: The Value of Customizing Hormone Replacement Therapy
Brenda Houdlette is our Nurse Coordinator. In addition to offering hormone therapy insights and health tips each month in our newsletter, Brenda offers patient consults with peri- and post-menopausal women. She provides patient education and works with patients and their practitioners to develop individualized bio-identical hormone therapy plans. Call anytime at 207-899-0663 x223 to set up your own patient consult.
Hormonal imbalances can occur at any age, before during or after menopause. These imbalances vary widely and may be caused by environment, stress, heredity, aging or nutrition. Although we tend to blame these problems on hormonal changes, we often need to explore these other areas as well. Discussing lifestyle along with specific symptoms may help us formulate a treatment plan that will lead to improved health and sense of well-being.
One of the most common complaints for women as they age is weight gain. As our hormones change, our adrenal glands struggle to keep up with the changes in our body. They can become "fatigued" and this leads to several other problems such as weight gain, sleeplessness, anxiety and stress. Supplements along with lifestyle changes can help with these bothersome symptoms. At Apothecary By Design, we work together as a team to treat specific symptoms and help patients find solutions for treatments and lifestyle changes that lead to positive outcomes. We are always available to answer questions and continue to follow our patients and make modifications if necessary. Happy Fall, Brenda
