Recipes to Keep You Healthy and Cool

Greetings!

"Ah, summer, what power you have to make us

suffer and like it."   ~Russel Baker

Summer is here in full swing and the long days bring in 90 degree weather, well-deserved vacations, spontaneous trips to the beach, and all kinds of fresh fruits. They also bring in heat exhaustion, sunburn, and an array of biting insects. While July is truly a time to head outside and play, it is also a time to take a bit more care with your skin and health.

Have no fear, though, because we've got just the tips and insights to help! Our staff have put together a Top Five list of products we sell in the store sure to help you beat the common summer hazards from too much sun to too many bug bites. Plus, we've selected some of our favorite summer iced drinks and recipes--delicious ones that keep you cool and make use of all the nutrients to be found in July's fresh foods.

We also have a special promotion staring now and running through the end of August: 20% off your next retail purchase when you share your experience at Apothecary by Design with others. (Through Facebook or online reviews.) Your recommendations mean a great deal to us and we appreciate your taking the time to tell friends, family, and community members why you choose to shop with us.

Cheers,

Summer Products
DAILY DOSE: Top Five Products to Help You and Your Family Manage Summer Health Hazards

1. Badger Sunscreen

SUN PROTECTION: The sun is at its strongest this time of year so protect your skin from cancer and aging with chemical-free sunscreen. Badger suncreens protect you from both UVA and UVB rays with uncoated, non-nano Zinc Oxide. They also contain Organic Olive Oil, Cocoa Butter & Shea Butter to moisturize your skin while protecting it. What's more, they have the highest ratings for safety and effectiveness by the Environmental Working Group's Cosmetic Safety Database . Pick up a tube before you head to the beach!

2. 'Skeeter Skiddadler

BUG PROTECTION: Ward off mosquitoes and flies with this local, Maine-made and all-natural essential oil bug repellent. 'Skeeter Skiddadler uses organic sunflower oil to repel flying, biting insects without harmful chemicals or DEET. It is also pleasantly fragrant and each bottle contains 60-100 applications. That's 300-400 hours of excellent protection--enough to last throughout the season!

3. All Terrain Aloe Gel Skin Relief

SUNBURN: For sunburn there is nothing better than aloe vera gel; it is antibacterial and deeply healing for burns in part because of aloectin B, which stimulates the immune system. All Terrain's Aloe Gel Skin Relief is paraben free and expert at preventing burns and providing relief from dehydrated skin. Replenish moisture after over exposure to wind or sun.

4. Apothecary by Design Vitamin C Supplements

SUN DAMAGE: Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps fight off free radicals that cause skin damage. Storing up on Vitamin C during the summer can help support the production of collagen in the skin (to keep it smooth and firm) and also help counteract the aging affects of sun exposure. Vitamin C also helps boost the immune system and aid with wound healing, so increasing your vitamin C intake while sunburned may help you heal. Come in to chat with us about which C supplements are right for you.

5. Avena Botanicals Itch Ease Spray

BUG BITES & RASHES: If your weekend camping excursion or backyard BBQ has left you with irritating bites or a case of poison ivy, reach for Avena Botanicals Itch Ease Spray. Made with a mix of all-natural herbs, this soothing and drying formula relieves itching and inflammation in cases of poison ivy, poison oak, and bug bites. (Also, made locally at Avena Botanicals--a company founded by herbalist Deb Soule.)

Brenda Houdlette

INTERVIEW: Brenda Houdlette - Our Nurse Coordinator - is Passionate About Patient Consults and Finding Solutions for Women Managing Menopause

We chatted with Brenda this month to learn more about her role at Apothecary by Design and to see what she loves most about being a patient resource.

Tell us about your background and expertise in women's health.

I hold a certification in reproductive endocrinology and I've had extensive training in women's health, nutrition and infertility. I worked at Coastal Women's Healthcare in Scarborough for over 18 years, functioning as a staff nurse and assisting the OB-GYN doctors in many ways. I acted as coordinator in Maine for vitro fertilization (IVF) patients - teaching injections, talking through cycles, and preparing patients for the IVF process. I also ran hysterectomy groups for women where I offered physical and emotional support during treatment.

During my last five years there, I became more interested in bio-identical hormone therapy (bHRT) and starting working with Joe Lorello here at ABD. The doctor I was working with at the time was open to bHRT treatment and would let me work with the women on finding the right formulas. I have been helping women deal with menopause since and I love it.

What is your current role at Apothecary by Design?

I offer patient consults with peri- and post-menopausal women and provide patient education. In coordination with their practitioners, I work with patients to develop a bio-identical hormone therapy plan and make sure that current forms of treatment are working for them. I also still work closely with our compounding team, calling all of the patients who get compounded prescriptions to make sure they know how to correctly measure and administer their medications.

How do you work with patients and their practitioners to come up with a plan to manage menopausal symptoms?

Patients come to me either through referrals from physicians or own their own. When I receive a referral, I get background medical records from the patient's practitioner to review for contra-indications and personal history. Then I sit down with the patient to consult and come up with a bio-identical formula and treatment plan that is right and easiest for them. We go over the compounding process (when necessary), the form of the medication, dosing and how they will take it.
Then I follow up after they receive the medication, and six weeks later to check and see if we need to make any modifications to treatment. (My door is always open, too, if at any time patients want to call with questions or concerns.)

When a patient comes to me on her own, we still sit down and talk through appropriate bHRT options. I devise a formula for treatment and most of the time when I contact her practitioner, he or she is open to what I suggest. If not, I can work together with each patient on a solution.

How does one schedule an appointment and how much does it cost?

Our patient consults are free and always have been. To schedule a consult, you just have to give a call and ask to speak with me. I work part-time and schedule most of my consults on Thursdays, with some on Wednesdays. I prefer to do consults in person but I will do them by phone if need be.

What do you see as the biggest benefit of your consults?

When you come in for a consult, you have someone that is all yours. This is an area of expertise for me and I love sharing it to help others. An initial consult typically lasts about an hour, so you have plenty of time to share your story and your concerns - free of charge. Women tell me often how much it means to have time with someone, and to have an expert really listening to them to determine the right plan and adjust as needed.

And what is your favorite part of the job?

Oh I love talking and spending time with these women too! It's challenging, it's rewarding, and it's really fun.

EAT WELL, STAY HEALTHY & COOL

Summer may be the season for heat but it is also the season for fresh fruits and veggies! Great news for your health. July is the month to pick up blueberries (loaded with antioxidants), watermelon or peaches (full of vitamin A & C and disease-fighting beta carotene), and tomatoes (bursting with lycopene to help prevent cancer).

Here are three recipes that make the most of this season's bounty and are guaranteed to keep you cool, refreshed, and eating your vitamins:

CINNAMON GRILLED PEACHES -  Grilled peaches - speared on cinnamon sticks, and basted with a brown sugar, butter, and bourbon mix.

BLUEBERRY LEMONDADE -  Blueberries, lemon, ice and a blender...a simple three step process for a chilly four star treat.

WATERMELON & TOMATO SALAD -  "Watermelon and tomato are two fruits that complement each another in an unusual way. When you cut up and combine them, their distinctions become a little blurry and each masquerades as the other. The tomato's acidity becomes tamed, as does the melon's sweetness; their juices mingle, and even their flesh seems to meld." - Mark Bittman
