New in the Store and in the Neighborhood

Greetings!

November is definitely a feel-good month. It's the time of year when we begin to gather with family and friends. We relive favorite traditions. We turn on the ovens and warm up the houses with roasting turkeys, baking pies, and bubbling dishes. We pause to take a moment and appreciate the things we are grateful for in life.

We're pausing to do that here at ABD right now, too. This month marks our Second Anniversary, and we're feeling thankful that you've welcomed us into the neighborhood - and your lives - and allowed us to contribute to your health and well-being. We're grateful to be able to continue to provide you with care.

And to truly thank you, we're celebrating our turning two with an Anniversary Sale: 20% off all nutraceuticals now through the end of 2010. We're also offering an exciting event to help you give the gift of good health to others by turning your holiday meals into nutritious (and very delicious!) feasts. Plus, we've got some suggestions for keeping your immune system strong this winter, and news about what's new, inside our store and out.

One final thank you goes out to Dr. Knight for his great event last month. Download his presentation here, and check out Michael Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma for Kids for more great insights on how to implement a healthy diet for your family.

Happy Thanksgiving and health to all!

Daily DoseDAILY DOSE: Boost Your Immune System with a Little Help From Your Homeopathic Friends

This time of year is when the temperature dips, the germs linger, and the number of cold and flu bug attacks goes up. Arm yourself with a strong immune system and a preventative plan. Jaana, our expert Wellness Specialist and homeopathic professional, provides some tips on nutraceuticals and herbs to help keep your immune system in fighting shape all fall and winter long.

The Foundation:
Start with a good Multi-Vitamin and plenty of rest (since sleep helps restore your body's energy reserves to keep your immune system functioning at its best). Mix in a little fresh air too, and add these two supplements:

Vitamin D - Adequate vitamin D levels are essential for optimal immune function. Recent research in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests that vitamin D may help immune cells identify and destroy bacteria and viruses that make us sick, reducing the onset of colds. Winter months mean less sun and so it's more important than ever to make sure you get enough of the wonder vitamin. Aim to get at least 1,000 IU of vitamin D daily (but check with your doctor first.)

Probiotics - Probiotics work very closely with our immune systems and play an important part in supporting our overall health. (Studies have shown that adding probiotics to a child's diet reduces incidents of colds.) The average amount of bacteria in a general probiotic supplement is equivalent to the bacteria content of one quart of yogurt. Look for at least 5-10 billion organisms per capsule.

The Immune Boosters:
There are a good many combinations of herbs that can help strengthen immune systems. Which ones to take depend on the person and whether you are looking for basic prevention, a boost while traveling, or extra support during disease treatment. Come in to chat with Jaana about which might be best for you. Two good, universal choices are:

Elderberry - This herb is great to take at the beginning of cold season as it has anti-viral and immune-boosting effects. Good tasting and good for the whole family, it's all-natural and comes in chewable tablets or syrup form.

Mushrooms - Many mushrooms are packed with immune enhancing effects as well.  Mushrooms can help to boost immune response and increase antibody production.

Throat Care:
If you do find yourself battling a sore throat, look to these natural antiseptics and supplements for relief without side effects:

Propolis  - Propolis is a resin gathered by honeybees from tree bark and leaves. It coats the throat and relieves pain by reducing inflammation. Likewise, Myrrh is a natural resin obtained from trees and shrubs that helps to heal sore throats.

Zinc - Zinc lozenges can help sore throats associated with a cold and may stop viruses from multiplying. Echinacea - This purple cornflower helps stimulates the immune system and can significantly shorten the duration of a sore throat.

Susan QuimbyEVENT: SuperFoods - The (Delicious) Key to a Healthy Holiday

November 16, 2010
6:30 - 8:00 p.m.

Susan Quimby
, R.D., L.D.

Our November event is one you won't want to miss! Susan Quimby - nutritionist and owner of Nutrition Works - will be stopping by to share key superfoods for disease prevention and health. Just in time to prepare your holiday menus and meals, she'll provide insights on (delicious!) foods worth serving up at your table. We chatted with Susan about the upcoming event and she shared her thoughts:

"Why not give the gift of good health to your friends and family this holiday season?"

People talk about giving the gift of good health and I think that food is the perfect way to do that. Serve those close to you healthy foods that taste good. You don't have to wait until the New Year to focus on being healthy and making up for the things you ate over the holidays - start now. Why not use this season as a way to give the gift of health and to come away from your meals saying, "Boy, I feel great!"? Believe me - good food can be really tasty!

"Superfoods are usually foods high in a number of nutrients."

Superfoods are foods that are usually high in more than one nutrient. Many super foods are high in antioxidants and are anti-inflammatory. Superfoods are great for overall health and fighting disease. They include things such as pumpkin, walnuts, blueberries, and even turkey.  Spices are also in the superfoods category!

"We need to be eating defensively. Studies show over 50% of cancers are diet related and so we need to be eating for prevention."

Our diet affects so much. It's important for us to focus on anything we can do to protect ourselves and our family, and food is one of the solutions. Food is an easy tool to use for prevention. We have to get back to the concept that food is medicine: tasty medicine, with no side effects!

"During the holidays, people look through recipes not because they are thinking about health but because they are thinking about taste. The two don't need to be mutually exclusive!"

Eat Good Food. That's important and that's what we'll talk about!

Dr. WuUPCOMING EVENT: Treating Autism: A look into Biomedical Intervention for Autism Spectrum Disorders

March 22, 2010
6:30 - 8:00 p.m.

Dr. Keelyn Wu, D.O

Dr. Keelyn Wu, renowned Maine osteopathic practitioner, will be coming to our store for a special event on biomedical intervention for autism spectrum disorders.

Dr. Wu will provide an introduction to biomedical intervention as well as an overview of successful dietary approaches and safe and effective treatments for digestion, immune support, detoxification and more. He'll lead a discussion on how to get started, various options for testing, and how to implement biomedical treatment on a budget. Time for questions and answers will follow the lecture.

Many children, teenagers, and adults with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have more than just a psychological disorder - they have a medical condition that includes immune dysfunction, nutritional deficiences, dietary sensitivities, detoxification imbalances, genetic susceptibilities, and more. Biomedical intervention is one form of autism treatment, and a science-based approach that addresses these key medical and environmental issues.

Biomedical treatments can be very helpful to children with autism. Dr. Wu says that biomedical intervention should be considered an essential part of a comprehensive autism treatment approach (one that also includes behavioral, physical, occupational, and speech therapy). While biomedical treatment does not help every child, the vast majority of children have shown improvements in various areas including speech, eye contact, autistic behaviors, immune function, digestion and sleep.

Dr. Keelyn Wu, D.O. has over 12 years of experience treating children and adults using Osteopathic Manipulative Treatments (OMT) and nutritional/biomedical intervention.  He is also a DAN! (Defeat Autism Now) physician and has a special interest in treating children with digestive issues, autism and ADHD.  He is in practice at Osteopathic Healthcare of Maine in Falmouth, ME.
