DAILY DOSE: Top Five Tips for Flu Prevention Prepare for the arrival of flu season with these prevention tips.
1. Get a Flu Vaccination The Center for Disease Control recommends "a yearly flu vaccine as the first and most important step in protecting against flu viruses." Anyone over six months should consider getting vaccinated but especially those at high risk, including pregnant women, young children, those with chronic health conditions, and anyone over 65.
2. Keep Germs at Bay The flu is spread through germs, so the more you can take care to avoid coming into contact with - or passing on - germs, the lower the flu risk. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Avoid touching your face - especially mouth, nose, and eyes. And cover your nose and mouth with a tissue, or your inner elbow, when you cough or sneeze. (Coughing into your hand increases the odds of spreading germs.)
3. Eat Healthy Dark green, red, and yellow fruits and vegetables are filled with the vitamins you need to give your immune system a boost. Yogurt contains beneficial probiotics and bacteria that may help stimulate the immune system and fight disease. Garlic has been shown to increase resistance to infection and stress. And chicken provides zinc - a vitamin necessary for proper immune function. (Don't forget to stay hydrated too! Water is essential to keeping your body healthy and flushing out toxins.)
4. Exercise Regularly Moderate amounts of aerobic exercise during flu season have been shown to boost the body's defenses against viruses. Jogging, brisk walking, or cycling - any type of aerobic exercise - can help transfer oxygen from your lungs to your blood and cause you to sweat out unwanted poisons.
5. Take Supplements Vitamin D is especially important for staying healthy during flu season as it supports immunity and helps prevent illness. Seventy percent of your immune activity resides in your GI tract and taking a probiotic can support GI health. Elderberry has also been shown to be effective in combating flu viruses.

EVENT: Navigating the World of Supplements
September 21, 2010 6:30 - 8:00 p.m.
Greg Boucouvalas, RPh, MS & ABD Principal answers your questions
Greg, our expert pharmacist, is stepping out from behind the counter this month to share insights on selecting the right nutraceuticals for your health and determining the quality of the vitamins and supplements you buy. He gave us a sneak peek into his talk:
Q: When it comes to selecting a high quality supplement, what are the questions we should be asking?
First and foremost - what's in it? You want to avoid anything with dyes and artificial substances in the ingredients. You also want to ask if it's food based or synthetic, and it's also good to know where the ingredients come from. (Some manufacturers are well trusted and better able to control the quality of their ingredients than others.) Remember - the cheapest supplement may not be the best value.
Q: How do you read a label properly?
In a quality ingredient, you should be able to recognize and pronounce most of the ingredients on a label. In whole food supplements, for example, you may read flax meal powder or carrot root powder as ingredients, instead of things like calcium carbonate or manganese sulfate. Like food, the nutrients are also listed in order of amount in the supplement. And additionally, some manufacturers may list the source next to the ingredient.
Q: What are the advantages of whole food supplements?
Whole food - or food based - supplements contain vitamins and nutrients derived mainly from recognizable food sources. Phytochemicals that are associated with plant based foods and supplements are more recognizable to the body, and therefore more readily put to beneficial use.
Q: What should people consider when taking supplements and conventional prescription medications?
This is a topic I plan to spend a fair amount of time on in my upcoming presentation. It is estimated that up to 30% of pharmaceutical side effects are the result of drug-induced nutrient deficiencies. Clearly, many prescription medications have life saving benefits. What if we could help people manage their side effects better and improve compliance? This is where our expertise at ABD shines, as pharmacists with specialized training in nutrition, we have the clinical expertise to help patients manage nutrient depletions and, equally important, drug-supplement interactions.

UPCOMING EVENT: They Are What You Feed Them - How nutrition can affect attention and behavior in our children
6:30 - 8:00 p.m.
Dr. Peter Knight
The CDC estimates that at least 7% of school aged children suffer from attention deficit disorder and as many as 5 million children are taking medication to treat it. Although stimulant medications can be effective for some children, they aren't always and they can sometimes have unwanted side effects. There is also concern that long term use of stimulant medications may increase risk of drug dependence and depression.
Fortunately, medication is not the only option for helping your child. Numerous studies have shown that dietary changes and correcting nutritional insufficiencies can have an effect on improving attention and behavioral symptoms.
Why let your child struggle through another school year?
Join Dr Peter Knight as he discusses the relationship between nutrition and attention and behavior. He will provide simple changes that you can make to your child's diet that can have profound effects on their behavior and ability to focus.
Peter Knight is a licensed doctor of naturopathic medicine, specializing in nutritional and holistic treatment approaches to chronic health conditions. He is a graduate of Bastyr University and is in private practice at True North in Falmouth, Maine.
