Greetings!

The end of summer and the beginning of back-to-school season is as good a time as any to think about good health. As you're heading out to the beach to enjoy the last heat wave, or packing the first lunchbox, consider small ways to head into fall healthier. Whether choosing a better sunscreen, getting an important vaccination, or starting a new supplement routine - one change can make a big difference.

In fact, change is on our mind this fall too. We're thinking about how we can better serve you and we'd like your help. We would like to hear your feedback. So before enjoying the late August days, take a moment to fill out our brief survey and let us know what you think.

Cheers,
The Apothecary by Design Team

Badger Sunscreen
DAILY DOSE: Safe Sunscreens

Late summer is often the time of year when the sun can sneak up on us and cause end-of-the season sunburns and skin damage. Sunscreen is still a must in September - but which one? Not all sunscreens are created equal. Or safe. To help determine what's most important in a sunscreen (and what should be avoided), we've got some tips.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) recently analyzed the safety and effectiveness of over 700 name-brand sunscreens. What they found was that 84 percent of the sunscreen products with an SPF rating of 15 or higher offer inadequate protection from the sun's harmful rays, or contain ingredients with safety concerns. Ironically, according to their in-depth research, "some popular sunscreen chemicals break down when exposed to sunlight and must be formulated with stabilizing chemicals. Others penetrate the skin and present significant health concerns."

While the best defenses against getting too much harmful UV radiation are protective clothes, shade, and timing, sunscreen is essential too. With the results of their scientific analysis, the EWG created a guide to sunscreen and a new database that ranks products and highlights the safest and most effective sunscreens. (On the site, you can also search for the ratings of your own sunscreen and learn lots of great sun safety tips too.)

Kyra - Merck Award
NEWS: Kyra receives a Vaccination Service Award

Kyra Mancini, our Nurse Coordinator, was recently awarded a Merck Vaccine Service Award for her exceptional work in providing vaccinations to our community. Merck (the maker of the Zostavax shingles vaccination) stopped by last week to present Kyra with a certificate. In addition, they will be donating $100 to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in the name of Apothecary by Design.

The award timing is fitting, as August is National Immunization Month (and a great time to consider the importance of keeping your immunizations up to date). Kyra has been administrating monthly shingles vaccine clinics at ABD since October, and helped to vaccinate hundreds of individuals over the age of 60 in the Portland area. We're pleased to be your independent, locally owned resource for vaccinations, and pleased to be a leader in prevention health care. (We're also very proud of Kyra for her great work!)
