DAILY DOSE
Prostate Health
Herbal supplements and a diet low in fat can help reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in American males. The American Cancer Society estimates that one man in six will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in his lifetime and one in 35 will die from it.
By age 50, half of all men have an enlarged prostate and by age 80, that number jumps to 80 percent. In fact, most men have some prostate cancer cells by the time they are in their twenties.
The key to keeping cancer cells from developing and spreading may rest in a diet low in fat and high in omega-3s and certain herbs.
Diets high in fat are associated with increased risk of prostate cancer, according to the National Academy of Sciences. Foods high in omega-6 fatty acids (such as meat, corn, dairy, eggs, and peanuts) contribute to the creation of fuel for cancer cells.
What's more, the average diet is high in omega-6 but depleted in omega-3. Whereas normal ratio levels of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids are two-to-one, American levels are as high as forty-to-one, putting males at risk for invasive prostate cancer.
Eating a healthy diet is the best way to maintain balanced omega ratios and reduce risk. Certain herbs and herbal supplements also have the power help prostate health.

Greetings!
"When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years." ~ Mark Twain
June is a month for celebrating fathers and men's health. Father's Day falls on June 20th this year, and to celebrate, we're providing great ways to help keep dads healthy and happy. On June 24th, Dr. Frederick Shotz, renowned Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine, will be coming to the store to talk about regaining youth and energy and eating well to remain healthy for the long term. We're sharing a Daily Dose focusing on prostate health in this issue and all month we'll be offering some great packages to treat dad.
Whether you are a father or just celebrating one, we hope that your Father's day is the best.
Cheers, Catherine Cloudman and the Apothecary by Design Team

Re-balance the Body

A Whole New You
On June 24th at 6:30 p.m., Dr. Frederick Shotz will be coming to the store for an event entitled, "Reset Your Body's Metabolism to Achieve a Higher State of Wellness and Permanent Weight Loss".
Dr. Shotz is a leading practitioner of Maine Integrative Wellness with over thirty-five years experience in conventional and alternative medicine. A Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine, he specializes in holistic health and disease prevention, and on June 24th, he will be speaking about the essential elements of the Whole New You program and sharing how to recalibrate our relationship to food and detoxify our food supply and environment to return to better health.
In anticipation of the event, Dr. Shotz shared some thoughts on his talk:
We are in the midst of a public health disaster unprecedented in human history. Overweight and obesity have become epidemic in America. The physical, mental, emotional and economic costs of this epidemic are incalculable and will devastate this and every other country that is unable to reverse the trend. If you are part of the affected population, you know that "diet and exercise" are of very little help in turning the tide of inexorable weight gain. What is needed is a totally different relationship with food than what we have become accustomed to in the last fifty years. What is needed is a return to "the cave-man diet", also known as "the Paleolithic diet", before the advent of prepared, processed, factory produced food products that bear little resemblance to what our ancestors thought of as food. Also needed is a refusal to participate in the chemicalization and toxification of our food supply and environment. We are now reaping the harvest of decades of careless acceptance of whatever the marketers of these high profit food substitutes chose to sell us. Along with obesity, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer's, ALS, Parkinson's, autism and asthma are all in epidemic proportions and climbing. These were all rare and some were even unknown just 100 years ago. These changes in our collective health are not genetic and they are not irreversible. The choice is ours: We can continue down this road to disaster for ourselves and our species, or make a major course correction and get back to the robust health and longevity our bodies have always been and are still capable of enjoying. The trail has been blazed and the path is not difficult to walk. Thousands are starting on it every day. It's easier than you think.
Thursday evening, I'll tell how you can do it, too.
Join us for appetizers, refreshments, and an opportunity to learn more from Dr. Shotz's expertise.
