AGAVE...
The Sweet Alternative

Agave nectar (or agave syrup) is a natural sweetener made from the core of an agave plant. It's popping up in many places these days and changing the way people sweeten foods and drinks.
(The nectar is being substituted for white sugar and artificial sweeteners in recipes and even tea!)

In both look and taste, agave might best be compared to honey. However, the sweetener actually has different origins and a few notable advantages over its bee-induced look-alike.

Agaves are large, spiky plants that resemble cactus and are most often found in Southern Mexico. Agave nectar is produced by filtering and heating juice from the core of an agave plant and turning it into simple sugars in a concentrated, syrup-like liquid. It ranges in color from light to amber to dark and varies in flavor from mild to strong, with dark agave tasting more like maple syrup.

With a relatively low-glycemic index, it is ideal for individuals concerned with blood-sugar levels. Agave also will not crystallize easily and has a lengthy
 shelf life.

A Wealth of Hormone Knowledge

Hormones and Your Health
Answers to the questions you've wanted to ask.

Dr. HaysOn June 8, at 6:30 p.m., Dr. Bethany Hays MD, Medical Director of True North Health Center, will be coming to ABD (and bringing with her over 30 years of study) to help answer all your hormone questions. Drawing from her vast experience and practice, Dr. Hays will share her insights and individualized, evidence-based answers that provide the information you need.

Dr. Hays is not only brimming with expertise on hormones, she is also full of energy. Talking with her is always and treat and we were excited to catch up with her to hear more about the upcoming event. Here's what she shared:

We're going to take a look at the history of hormone therapy and why it is so controversial. We will look at why women have been told one thing for so long and are now being told another. We'll discuss who should get hormone therapy and who shouldn't. (The answer to that question always depends on what your hormone level is.)

Often doctors are used to treating women based on symptoms, not estrogen levels.

The problem is that many symptoms of menopause and perimenopause don't have to do with low hormone levels. (We live in an adrenaline-driven culture, for example, and hot flashes may stem from adrenaline, not menopause.) Doctors don't measure hormone levels and they should. They prescribe Premarin (synthetic estrogen replacement therapy) as a solution without testing and knowing the whole story. They nail estrogen levels to the ceiling and get rid of hot flashes,  but sometimes unnecessarily and with risk. Too much estrogen can cause breast cancer.

Traditional synthetic therapy works for most women to cure menopause, but the amount of hormone in such therapies is just too much (almost double what women often need).

The key is to measure hormone levels and get a clearer idea of which treatments to take. Without being able to measure hormone levels, you're just throwing stuff at it to see if it sticks. I solely recommend bio-replacement therapy because with it, we are able to measure hormone levels and better monitor treatment.

Mother Nature is way better at controlling hormones than doctors. She's been doing it for 3,000 years.

The goal is to return women to normal hormone levels. (Young women have high levels of toxic hormones to assist in having a baby and as they age, and menopause sets in, they no longer have a need for such high estrogen levels.) We have to look elsewhere for the cause of the problem. Many women return to normal levels with changes in health, diet, and lifestyle. There have always been women living to 100. The system works if nothing intervenes.

It's a delicate walk to balance hormones at the level your body can handle.

So many things come into play - lifestyle, environment, toxins, etc. As we age, we experience more damage to our cells and they get less efficient at repairing themselves. Our machines get rusty and it is more important for us to protect our engines.
The key is to manage hormones at a level your body's engine can handle. Our foot is on the accelerator and the question is, do we push it all the way down, or tap it, or take it off all the way and coast?

Dr. Hays looks forward to talking about all these things and your questions too - as well as Suzanne Somers! Join us on June 8th. Refreshments and appetizers will be served.
