The Power of Probiotics

Probiotics

Intestinal health affects all parts of our body (from our immune system to mucus membranes). Probiotics are beneficial because they help keep our gastrointestinal system in balance.

Probiotics are dietary supplements or food that contain beneficial ("good") bacteria that are similar to those normally found in the body. Our body contains billions of bacteria and other microorganisms that assist with digestion and help protect against harmful bacteria.

Probiotics promote overall health and also help treat irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), colon inflammation, Crohn's disease, and diarrhea (especially from antibiotic side effects). They also reduce bladder cancer recurrence, prevent and treat vaginal yeast infections and urinary tract infections, help with gluten allergies, and prevent eczema in children. Probiotics are beneficial for everyone-children and adults-but especially helpful for those with gastrointestinal diseases or issues, elderly patients, women, and athletes.

Probiotics are naturally occurring in foods such as yogurt, fermented and unfermented milk, miso, and some juices and soy drinks. Eating these foods is good for health, however they contain just millions of units of each bacteria strain whereas probiotic supplements contain multiple bacteria strains and concentrates of bacteria in the billions. The more bacteria you take in, the higher the benefits.

A probiotic with 15 billion units is good for average daily use. (Jarro-Dophilus is a great product option that is affordable and doesn't have to be refrigerated.) When the need for higher potency arises (with illness, antibiotics, or yeast infections for example), you can bump your supplement concentrate up to 25-35 billion. And, for those experiencing IBS or Crohn's or other disease flair-ups, you can increase dosage to 60 billion.

At ABD, we offer a broad selection of high-quality probiotics in varying concentrates and forms. (We have chewables and powders for children, gluten and dairy free products, and even a traveler-specific probiotic to help when facing changes in diet or food borne illness).

Come in and talk with our staff to find the right probiotic for you.

Greetings!

The New Year is already in full swing and as time flies by, we thought it was good to focus on the importance making good choices for our health. As busy as the days may be, pausing to take a few proactive steps toward optimal health can make a big difference.

Steps like adding a supplement to your daily regimen to avoid vitamin deficiencies, or taking a probiotic to support digestion and gastrointestinal health. Limiting the amount of sugar you eat each day will help keep disease at bay. And even taking a fifteen minute afternoon break for some coffee and conversation can help increase your mood and positively affect your health.

The choices we make have lasting impacts on our wellbeing and this month our newsletter focuses on helping you make the right ones. We offer insight into the Power of Probiotics, Nutraceuticals 101, and health tips from our upcoming speaker, Dr. Christine Maguire.

We know how hard it is to carve time out for our health and that's why our staff, experts, and services are here to help you remain at your best without sacrificing any precious time.

Best,

With So Many Supplements Out There, Where Do I Even Start?

While medications and prescriptions are essential for disease management, dietary supplements can also play an important role in supporting nutrient depletion, enhancing positive eating habits, and improving your quality of life.

But from daily multi-vitamins to workout supplements, there are thousands of nutraceuticals on the market today. Knowing what they do, how they interact with prescriptions, and which ones are right for you can be overwhelming. We're here to help.

We not only know our fish oils from our flax oils, but as medical professionals we understand how medications and supplements interact. We take a clinical approach to finding the right nutraceuticals for your mind, body, and lifestyle and coordinate with you, your health care provider, and our staff, to help find the right supplements for you.

So where do you begin?

We've asked Janna and Joey - our nutraceutical experts - to share the

 Top Five Most Important Supplements:

1.    Multivitamin - Taking a multivitamin is important for preventing vitamin deficiency and insufficiency. Multivitamins help improve overall health and provide key nutrients where diets lack. When selecting a multivitamin, it's important to look at the key nutrients included in the multivitamin, the amount of nutrients supplied (and in what form), and any fillers used. Not all are created equal and getting the best results for your health starts with selecting the right supplement. (We carry only the highest-quality products and our staff is on hand to help guide you.)

2.    Omega-3 Fatty Acids - A number of studies have been done showing the cardiovascular benefits of taking fish oil. Omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids help reduce the risk of heart disease and heart attacks and help boost our immune system, protecting us from many illnesses and health threats. Dosage levels vary based on individual circumstances but since most of us don't meet the necessary omega-3 minimums through our diet, taking a fish oil supplement can help. Quality is important when take fish oil. It's important to look for DHA and EPA levels, the source of the fish oil, and purity and freshness.  (And if you experience side effects such as "fish burps" try freezing the capsules, taking with a meal, changing brands, or getting omega-3s from flaxseed.

3.    Vitamin D - Studies have shown that proper levels of vitamin D have numerous health benefits including improved bone health, reduced risk of autoimmune disease and certain cancers, and improved mood. Studies have also shown that the majority of us lack sufficient vitamin D (especially in New England where adequate sun exposure is difficult to come by). Dosage levels can vary but a good starting dose is at least 1,000 mg per day. It's important to get your vitamin D levels tested and monitored by your health care provider as well because in excess, vitamin D can be harmful.

4.    Probiotics - Probiotics are dietary supplements or foods that contain beneficial, or "good," bacteria that are similar to those normally found in your body. They may provide some of the same health benefits that the bacteria already existing in your body do - such as assisting with digestion and helping protect against harmful bacteria. Read on about the benefits and dosage recommendations of probiotics in our Daily Dose at left.

5.    Magnesium
- The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey suggests that substantial numbers of adults in the United States (US) fail to get the recommended amounts of magnesium in their diets. Magnesium helps maintain normal muscle and nerve function, keeps heart rhythm steady, supports a healthy immune system, and keeps bones strong. It also helps regulate blood sugar levels and promotes normal blood pressure. Recommended Daily Allowances for magnesium vary by individual so stop in to talk with our specialists about which supplement is right for you.

Dr. Maguire Preview

In preparation for Dr. Maguire's upcoming event, we spoke with her about the importance of good health.

When Dr. Chris's mother was diagnosed with cancer last year, she was given a list of things to prevent to help overcome her disease. The items on the list struck a chord with Dr. Chris. They weren't just prevention tools to improve health in cancer patients, they were lifestyle choices that impacted everyone.

The strategies used to fight cancer are the same proven strategies used to avoid cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. They are strategies everyone can learn from and Dr. Chris will share them in her talk on February 23rd.

Here's a preview of what's to come:

-  Our lifestyle choices have a bigger impact on our health than our genes
-  The big three diseases thrive in certain environments and when you take away the negative conditions, you decrease the opportunity for disease growth. (Diseases feed on sugar for example, so avoiding sugar is important.)
-  Three keys to avoiding the top three diseases: eat well, move well, and think well

Whether you are looking to get motivated to make new healthy lifestyle choices or just stay on track, Dr. Chris's tips and insights will help.
