Kelly OlczakPresident's Letter

Well, it seems that Fall is upon us!  But, what happened to Summer?  I guess that upstate New York is all about the four seasons - I have heard that if you don't like the weather around here, wait five minutes, it will change!

For me, Fall is my favorite time of year.  We are back to business, kids are at school, the evenings are getting crisp, the colors of our beautiful countryside are changing.  Fall brings wonderful memories of family, friends and comfort food.  Personally, I have begun the process to become more organized.  I have leveraged relationships that I have made within NAWBO to help me with this effort.  I found my business coach through NAWBO.  I have found other business owners who are great networkers, who have helped me realize that I am not alone in my quest for balance. I am so thankful for the insight that our group has given me.  If you are looking for resources, expertise or kindred spirits, our NAWBO chapter is full of business owners that are so willing to help, so join us at our events, meet new and productive business owners.  You never know how these members can help you and your business!

We are so happy to welcome, our newest member Sharon Grace, Author and Public Speaker, she has a great story and great focus.  Sharon is already participating in our networking events.  Please make Sharon feel welcome, as I know you will!

The results of our survey are in and we will share the results with you this month in a following email.  I want to thank the board for all their hard work getting this project done.   As soon as our board meets on October 14th, we will share the results with you so that you can get an idea of what your fellow members and prospective members shared with us.  Thanks to all who participated, what a response we got.  We are very excited to implement the recommendations we received, more information to follow later in this letter.

Once again, our September Power Lunch was a wild success!  We had 20 members and non-members enjoyed major networking before Dara Greiger shared with us her secrets to relationship marketing!  Dara's presentation was very well received and we are going to try and get a more indepth discussion with her for those of you that missed this great opportunity to learn what relationship marketing is all about.

When I spoke to one of our members who attended this event, she told me that she was delighted to have received a referral during the lunch that will increase her business by a couple hundred thousand dollars in revenue over the next 12 months!  Now THAT's networking!  This member told me that she wasn't initially going to attend, but her calendar opened up so she decided to show up at the last minute!  Our Power Lunch is an amazing event, if you haven't had a chance to attend one of these lunches, maybe you should!

Lastly, GRC NAWBO had a table at the Key4Women breakfast on September 30th.  We had a terrific time and met lots of new people.  We enjoyed an amazing talk by Nadja Piatka, an amazing woman with an amazing story of how she, as an unemployeed single mother of two teenages with only $100 investment took her dream of being self-sufficient from her kitchen to a multi-million dollar company.  I have to say, this presentation really put it into perspective for many of us.  It also illustrates how we can be what we want to be if we work hard and don't take "no" for an answer!

I hope all of you enjoy this lovely season.  We at GRC NAWBO look forward to seeing you again very soon and hope that you have a very productive month!

Warmest regards,

Kelly Olczak

Join Us for Our NAWBO Mini-MBA Series lead by Dr. Thomas Pray, Professor Emeritus of The Saunders College of Business at RIT!

Ok, this is SO cool!  One of our Our Annual Sponsors, E. Philip Saunders College of Business, has graciously offered our NAWBO Chapter a 2 1/2 Day Mini-MBA Program.  This program is very special and has never been extended to a group like ourselves.

We will be working with Dr. Thomas Pray, and his business simulation that has been leveraged by many Fortune 500 companies as a means to improve efficiencies and create depth in their management teams.  We will be providing more details later this month but MARK YOUR CALENDAR for December 10 - 12. This is a very exciting opportunity...so, keep your eyes open for the full details to come!
Vicki JamesMember Spotlight
Vicki James of Thaney & Associates

This month, we have the pleasure to learn about one of our newest members, Vicki M James, Business Development Specialist for Thaney & Associates, CPAs, PC

Vicki is excited to be working in the marketing and communications field again after a five year hiatus as an Office Manager at a local trucking company.  Before that, Vicki was the Marketing Director for a national cheerleading and dance company creating and managing the catalog, advertising and new product development.  Her natural "social butterfly" personality drew her to the marketing field which allowed her to utilize her strenghts in communication and networking.  "I love when I can look back upon a week and realize that I've connected six people together through referrals." says Vicki.  "It's a great feeling when you can help others out."

Thaney & Associates has offices in Rochester and Brockport NY, West Palm Beach, Florida as well as Kissimmee, Florida.  These branches focus on accounting, tax services as well as "CFO for the day" for companies who "need a CFO but aren't ready for a full-time executive".

Vicki loves business development, which is why Mr. Thaney asked her to join the firm.  Along with her responsibilities for marketing strategy for Thaney & Associates, she is also responsible for directing the marketing for BizUnion, Inc., also owned by Mr. Thaney.  This group is "an insightful business consulting firm" that assists clients with valuation, development, mergers and acquisitions.  Lastly, Vicky is responsible for marketing for TLR, Inc. TLR, Inc has been a constant in the QuickBooks® textbook and training industry offering self-learning manuals and seminars taught by QuickBooks® ProAdvisors".
Vicki is happy to say that Thaney and Associate's environment is "very different from the traditional CPA atmosphere.  We have a very relaxed, yet client-centric practice.  Mr. Thaney's business card does not say CEO or President, it says Business Therapist!  We have found that our clients enjoy our atmosphere.  As an organization, our firm likes to have fun, too. Every month we have "Lunch of the Month", where everyone brings a dish from home to pass.  This month had a salad theme, so we all brought something from the garden!"

When asked what her biggest accomplishment has been Vicki says that "I've worked my way up from the bottom.  My personal situation didn't allow for college but I've made up those years with self-training and experience.  I'm proud that I can be a role model for my children proving that hard work does pay off."

Words to live by!
