Greetings!
I crave tradition. On holidays I want to eat the same meal, do the same activities, and be with the same people. I think I crave tradition because it establishes memories. Christmas means tradition, we light Advent candles every Sunday during dinner, sing carols every night as we count down the days, attend Christmas Eve service and open our bibles to Luke and read of Christ's birth before eating ham with mashed potatoes. Just writing about it makes me smile as my mind jumps through Christmases past. What are your Christmas traditions? Do you plan to establish any new ones this year? |

The Best Gift to Give is You!
I must admit, I'm a Christmas music sap. It takes a lot of restraint to keep it turned off until after Thanksgiving in my house. This year I heard a song I had missed before: "Give Love on Christmas Day" by the Jackson 5. I really enjoyed the message and hope that amidst all the wrapping paper, ribbon, and bows you take a break to realize just how much of a gift you are to those around you.
The item you wrap not only delights the recipient, but brings with it fond memories of you. Time spent together, laughs shared, inside jokes created. I can imagine a Christmas without gifts, but not one without friends or family. To give of yourself can be time consuming, but it has a great return on investment. Both giver and receiver are blessed in the end. Following are some ideas I have, if you have more to add please share on Facebook.
- Give a game and play it together.
- Help them assemble a dollhouse or model.
- Send a coloring book, stamps, and envelopes to out of town nieces and nephews, grandkids and cousins and become artwork pen pals.
- Get your own Webkinz account and make a date to play games together online.
- Purchase tickets for a concert or play together and attend it together.
If someone you know could use these ideas, please

December Trivia: Bring us Some Figgy Pudding!
What is it and why do carolers demand it? I just had to ask the question and share the answer. It turns out figgy pudding is not our American idea of pudding. It is baked, boiled, or steamed and a bit more like...dare I say it? Fruit cake. There are a variety of recipes and is also known as Chrismas Pudding. The type of dried fruit varies from figs, to plums, to raisins, but the best part is it is often lit on fire! I don't know if I'll ever get to try it myself, this recipe looks very involved, but I'd love to hear if you do. Think I'll stick to singing the song.
Bonus: Who is credited with creating the Fig Newton recipe? Email me a correct answer in the next 48 hours for a chance to win a $5 Learning Tree coupon good on anything in the store! Three correct respondents will be chosen at random.
Congratulations to November's bonus question winners Heather, Tonya, and Diana! The answer is: Granada boasts the image of nutmeg on it's national flag.
Know someone else who enjoys trivia as much as you do? |
