Greetings!

Each year as summer ends I stomp my feet and complain, "But I didn't get enough!"  Then October begins, I feel the briskness in the air, smell cider simmering, see the leaves slowly changing and hear them crunching when I step on them and exclaim, "YEAH, Fall is hear!".  This year I am extra excited because fall is bringing with it a new venture here at the Tree.  We are now offering tutoring!  This has been a dream of mine for many years and often said I could do it once I got cloned.  Barb is not my clone, but a friend and teacher whom I have great admiration and respect.  Many of her former students declare, "She was the best teacher ever!"  If you have a student who needs a little extra assistance, feel free to email Barb and see how she can join you in helping this student succeed.

Meet Barb Anderson

Barb
As a local educator for many years, The Learning Tree has always been a frequent destination for me to purchase resources and supplies.  Now I am fortunate to have the opportunity to be joining The Learning Tree team as a tutor!

I have been married to my husband for almost 32 years and we have three children; two sons, who are in college, and one daughter, who is a junior in high school.  My favorite activities are spending time with my family and reading.

Teaching is my passion! I believe that first and foremost, students must know that their teacher genuinely cares before they are willing to learn from that teacher.  It is my desire for every student I work with to feel loved and valued, and for them to say, "I CAN do it!".  I strive to "connect" with my students, helping them to see their unique and special qualities, and helping them to build their self-confidence as learners.  My goal is to be a teacher who inspires my students to learn and give their very best!

"Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire."  William Butler Yeats

My teaching/tutoring is tailored to the particular needs and learning styles of individual students.  I will develop a structured plan to ensure learning goals are met and use a variety of teaching methods and creative learning activities to encourage enjoyment and success in learning.

October Trivia:Bright Ideas

bulb  Thomas Edison was an amazing man who had 12 weeks of formal schooling as a child, would likely be considered ADHD today, and became almost completely deaf.  His parents supported him through homeschooling, encouraging reading of the classics, hands on expiramentation, and tutors.  Thomas' brave mother even allowed him to set up a lab in the basement! Difficulty only brought more determination from Thomas and proved to be an advantage over other inventors.  Over his life span, Thomas Edison patented over 1,000 inventions!  The effects of his work are still used in computer technology today.

I often think of inventors as being in the history books, but they could be next door.  The Seattle Times had a front page article that caught my interest this week.  Take a take a look to find out more.

Bonus:  How old is the modern day prodigy, Gabriel See? Email the correct answer in the next 48 hours for a chance to win a $5 Learning Tree coupon good on anything in the store!  Three correct respondents will be chosen at random.

Congratulations to September's bonus question winners Mary, Sarah, Kathy, Donna, and Amy!  The answer is: President John Quincy Adams discovered the eavesdropping properties of the U.S. capitol building's parabolic reflectors.

Our goal is to make your experience at the Learning Tree a happy one.  We receive great joy in hearing how we help you and meet your educational needs.  Please let us know how we can serve you better.

Sincerely,
