DIETARY GUIDELINES TO PREVENT AND MANAGE IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME [IBS]. IBS can be a very discomforting ailment for some, but if you wish to minimize the recurrence of bacterial overgrowth after eradication, the following 10 guidelines will discourage the symptoms of bloating and constipation. 1] Limit the intake of sweeteners 2] Limit or eliminate high residue foods that are difficult to digest such as beans, soy products and milk 3] Drink at least one half of your body weight in water per day 4] Eat healthy portions of meat, fish, poultry and eggs 5] Choose carbohydrates such as potatoes, yams, rice, cereals and some breads (limit those with nuts and seeds) 6] Consume two fresh fruits per day with skins removed. No dried fruit 7] Eat cooked vegetables and avoid large salads with raw vegetables as those are harder to digest 8] Stear clear of dairy products and substitute with rice milk and a calcium supplement 9] Enjoy moderate amounts of coffee, teas and sodas 10] Most importantly, maintain a balanced diet. Eat 3 meals per day and drink plenty of water. Incorporate moderate exercise as activity helps maintain regular bowel function.
