Teachers' Union Strike
Greetings!
When only 15% of Chicago 4th graders can read on grade level or do basic math, a strike seems a harsh reality for students.
Deneen Borelli author of Blacklash, was a guest panelist on FOX News' Hannity when the story broke Monday, September 10. Borelli insisted that students in struggling school districts such as Chicago's need the freedom of school choice in the form of school vouchers, which echoed comments by Condoleeza Rice at the recent RNC.
According to a report by the Federation for Children, school choice in the form of vouchers and school tax credits are gaining support in several states, including Pennsylvania.
... [In] Pennsylvania, where lawmakers recently expanded its existing scholarship tax credit program and created a new program for students in failing school districts, a majority of voters said they were more likely to vote for legislators who support school choice.
"More Americans support publicly funded private school choice programs than ever before because these programs are transforming the lives of children most in need," said Kevin P. Chavous, senior advisor to the Federation. "There is great momentum for school choice because Democratic and Republican policymakers around the country are recognizing what parents already know-that all options should be on the table to give kids who are trapped in perpetually underperforming schools an immediate path to a quality education." After the EITC program was expanded (Act 82), the Pennsylvania bill to approve school vouchers has been largely tabled by legislators.
ACTION of PA supports school choice and the voucher system especially for students who live in underprivileged neighborhoods and attend underperforming schools. The Commonwealth Foundation reports that research finds PA students five times as likely to suffer violence at academically failing schools.
The West Chester School Board is currently in negotiation with the Teachers' Union who requested an 18.3% salary increase over the course of a three-year contract.
