February/2011

"I think dogs are the most amazing

creatures; they give unconditional

love. For me they are the role model

for being alive." - Gilda Radner

Happy February -- The Month of LOVE!

What a successful adoption month we had in January!  Ten precious lives (9 English Bulldogs and 1 French Bulldog) have found their forever homes. Many thanks to all who have been adopted by one of our Bulldogs!

While many Bulldogs were adopted, there are still many more waiting for their very own home, including our honorary bully Spike, the Dalmatian mix (a GREAT gentleman that needs to be the only pet in the home - he really is a wonderful boy).  There are also more Bulldogs that have come into Rescue this last month. One of them is our special needs Bulldog, Diesel. He is our "tripod" that you can read more about below.

Most of our Bulldogs come from owner surrenders and from shelter strays. When they first come into Rescue, very few are available for immediate adoption. They are all given much-needed medical attention from our dedicated vets. As they are recuperating, they go on to live in foster homes, helping them to become as healthy as possible.  This can only be accomplished through our many supporters and volunteers.

Below you can check out our available dogs!

Check out Spike, (honorary) Bulldog of the Month!

So Cal Bulldog Rescue is indebted to all those that help in any way -- the volunteers that foster the sickest of dogs, volunteers that spend hours at vet offices, volunteers that make visits to shelters, families that provide financial support, our vet offices with staff that help so very much and our backers that help make Rescue a success.

The ultimate measure of our success is that every Bulldog rescued is a story of volunteers coming together to make the life of one more Bulldog better.

Remember to hug your bully today!

The Tote Coat Supports SoCal Bulldog Rescue

The Tote Coat is a proud supporter of The Southern California Bulldog Rescue (www.socalbulldogrescue.org) and Alzheimers' Research.

Our family dog, Boris, was adopted with its assistance. Any purchase of a Tote Coat from So Cal Bulldog Rescue's facebook fans and friends is 20% off all the time.

The totes work great as doggy bags and even--yuck--if your four-legged friends get sick. Better in the tote than in your car! They're 100% sanitizable and disinfectable. You can wash them with warm soap and water, a wetnap, Clorox wipes, or with a plain ol' back yard hose.

They can be made to any size specification. Let us know what you want and we'll be glad to oblige. Custom charges will apply.

Come Meet Our Bullies!  February 19th

Starting with the New Year, we will be holding our public day to meet adoptable Bulldogs on the 2nd Saturday of each month. Due to scheduling conflicts with other Bulldog Events, we will be having the February Meet-And-Greet on the 19th.

We're doing our next monthly Adoptable Bulldog Meet-And-Greet
with the Rescue Bulldogs on February 19th, 2011 at
Grand Pet Care Center in Santa Ana, California.

Due to limited space at this location, please no family pets. There will be foster homes bringing their foster dogs for adoption and those Bulldogs at the kennel will be there to meet families as well.
Our normal adoption process will still apply with all adoptions. We require applications, approved home checks and adoption contracts will need to be signed by those adopting a Bulldog.  You will have time to meet with the foster parents of the Bulldogs and ask any questions you may have about the adoption process.

We cannot promise all our Bulldogs will be there to meet you, but are planing to have as many there as possible. In the event of rain, the event will be rescheduled. This is not a not first-come, first-served adoption event... instead, it's a time for those interested in meeting several Bulldogs at one time and discussing adoption in person with several Bulldogs there.

Look forward to seeing you!

Mark your calendar and tell your friends interested in adoption:

February 19th, 2011
10 AM to Noon
  Grand Pet Care Center
1602 N. Grand Ave.
Santa Ana, CA 92705

It will be from 10 AM to Noon. This will be a time for those that have approved applications and home checks to come meet many of the Bulldogs at one time. Look for us in the back greens behind the white picket fence.

Also, if you are a family considering adoption and not sure if Rescue is really for you, you too can come and speak with Rescue Members about the adoption process.
Monthly Pledge Program
Special 'thank you' to the families that have already made the pledge to help SCBR with a monthly pledge to help purchase dog food and pay expenses thoughout the year with their planned monthly donation.

You too can make a monthly pledge where you pledge at least $5 a month or more to help SCBR budget the care expenses for the many Bulldogs in Rescue.  It's not a lot from just one or a few families, but a pledge from many families, that will make a difference.

Smart Dog Training!

Short on time and need help with training?

A new concept in dog training offered by Bad Dogs Inc,  is Smart Dog programs that allow you to make the most of your time and learn everything you need to know with zero risk of missing sessions and dropping out.

Smart Dog
training programs take all the information and skills you were meant to learn in a standard class, and concentrate the learning experience into a single 3-hour meeting. You learn all the tools and techniques you need to teach your dog everything he needs to know without the repetitive group practices, demonstrations and weekly reviews.

Some Special Dogs Waiting For Homes

Some of our special and dearest of bulldogs (including one non-bulldog) are looking for homes. It's been a long time for these dogs and nothing would make them happier than finding a Valentine to love and a home of their own.

SPIKE -- (HONORARY) BULLDOG OF THE MONTH!

Spike

Spike
Spike is eight years old great boy, possibly a mix of grey hound and dalmatian. He is very sweet loves everyone, gets along great with bulldogs and medium to large size breeds as long as they are not alpha over him and pushy. He listens well to direction and training, he does pull slightly on lead but does not drag you. Spike is house broken and likes to have his outside time, he gets antsy if left in a kennel area too long without outside time. He will go into a crate to sleep at night with no problem.

Mr. Wally! Wally was found abandoned and was rescued from the
Walley
Wally
shelter with several medical issues, including two large tumors on his abdomen and leg. He's had them removed and is fully healed from his surgeries, and as you can see he also needs to put on some weight! But he's a real trooper - he's building up his strength, slowly gaining weight and loves to take short walks to the park with his "pack". He is happiest as the only pet. Most of all he loves being around people - not necessarily in your lap but by your side or where he knows you'll be close by

Daisy was the product of a puppy mill. She was sold to a petstore and resold to a family who had no idea she had a neurological disorder.
Baby_Daisy
Baby Daisy
Sweet Miss Daisy was born with Spina Bifida, a developmental birth defect caused by the incomplete closure of the embryonic neural tube. As a result, she does not have full control of her back end and legs and is incontinent, so she must wear a diaper for the rest of her life. Daisy can walk and run. Special needs does not mean that Baby Daisy can not have a long and happy life with a family of her own, though it will mean a little extra care will be required.

Gus
Gus
Augustus AKA Gus was adopted from Rescue back in April of 2009 and surrendered back to Rescue a year later. Gus is good with cats and other dogs as long as they are not dominant. Due to his size he needs a family with kids older then 10. He is arthritic now due to being overweight and carrying that weight on his legs. Gus does have seizures and needs to be on medication and joint supplements the rest of his life, he is very personable and has great house etiquette. Gus is housebroken and does not bark, although he will whine at times when he is scared or lonely, he truly is a big baby. Gus loves to go on walks and does not pull or drag you.

Eliza is about 6 years old and a ball of energy. She loves to go for walks, hang out with her foster siblings, and run around the house.
Eliza
Eliza
She was picked up from a shelter as a stray, where she had some babies that she lost shortly after birth when the shelter did not know she was ready to give birth in the shelter.  One of her favorite things to do is run outside, throw herself on the ground, and scratch her back on the warm concrete. Besides giving 'kisses', Eliza loves to be with family members and loyal to a fault.

Sacha is a very healthy and spunky 6-year-old boy with tons of affection to give. Sacha is looking for a home of his own now.

Sacha was surrenderd to SoCal Bulldog Rescue because the owner felt he needed more attention and activity than they could give him. Sacha would do be in a home with a big yard to run around and someone that has time to spend training him. Sacha is not a fan of dogs that are bigger than him, but can definitely handle smaller dogs and cats.

Kenny was found as a stray in South Orange County, clearly a family pet for most of his life until he was abandoned in a local housing tract. Rescue was contacted and we went to get him.

Kenny is very endearing and loves to romp around being silly. We say no small kids with him because we have no history on him with children. Kenny is a very easy going male bulldog that loves nothing more than to go for short walks, lay in his bed and to have treats.

So What's Going on With Diesel?

Diesel is our 7-month old tri-pod! He was severely injured by another family dog, when they were left alone. As the infection had spread and was getting worse, the family's resources were such that they were unable to care for him any longer. He had several puncture wounds that were infected and some tissue was already dead. Diesel also has a broken jaw. SCBR agreed to foster and see to all of his medical, physical and emotional needs. Due to the infection in Diesel's arm threatening his life, Dr. Kraemer and SCBR made the decision to amputate.

DieselFace22

During Diesel's stay at Grand Pet Care Center, he spent the first few days gaining strength from his surgery and fighting the infection still left in his little body. With many daily visitors and the love they provided, as well as the excellent care from the staff, Diesel was feeling better and was OK'd to spend some time outside. Diesel has gone from a very sick puppy to a wonderfully spirited boy with 3 legs. He is now in foster care, getting the kind of care, love and experience that comes from living in a home -- going for long walks in his special stroller, going for car rides, sleeping in a soft bed -- moving on to that next step before he finds a home of his very own.

SoCal Bulldog Rescue wants to thank the many volunteers (and 3 surrogate Mommys!) that have spent time with him, giving him so much love, attention, encouragement and the rehabilitative excercise that he needs to learn to live with 3 legs!

As we have seen, with so many Bulldogs that have come through Rescue, it is best to focus on what the dogs have and not what they are missing. One thing they all have is the ability to love and be loved, to provide their new families with companionship, loyalty and their own special brand of goofiness.

To contribute to Diesel's care and medical expenses, please go to Paypal to make a tax-deductible donation. We thank you!!!
