This November we celebrate 70th Anniversary of the Irbit Motorcycle Factory and introduce two special edition models: M70 sidecar and M70 solo.

We came up with the idea for these motorcycles two years ago, but saved it for the anniversary year. We studied archive photos, carefully chose the paint, searched for the right material for tonneau cover, recreated the first IMZ badge ...     

Grant Ray from HellForLeatherMagazine.com came out to Seattle and took the M70 sidecar and solo for a test ride...of course to try it out in the snow! The result? Ural is Ural. Proven once again. It wants to take the path less traveled even in 1WD, low clearance, 18" tires, most street friendly Retro model configuration. Fall and winter seasons are the best for Ural. And not only for riding in the mud and snow, but also for finding great deals on 2011's. Read on for details. 

Also everyone is inquiring about what's new for 2012. The answer in short is: bikes will have some changes, small but the ones that make life easier for maintenance and just in general. :-)

It was a brutally cold November of 1941. The Nazis were at the outskirts of Moscow, preparing for the all-in assault on the Soviet capital. At the same moment, in a small town of Irbit, located on the eastern slopes of the Ural Mountains, 2000kms away from Moscow, a freight train arrived with the machinery, materials, and drawing boards. With this train came people with an impossible task to build a factory in the middle of a Siberian winter and produce combat sidecar motorcycles for the Red Army.    

The motorcycle that was to be built at the Irbit factory was called M72. The M72 was essentially a copy of a BMW R71, the best sidecar motorcycle of the time. A rugged, all terrain motorcycle, capable of carrying three people and heavy loads, was ideal for mobile troops. The Nazis were to be beaten with their own weapon!

The first motorcycles built by the Irbit Factory were sent to the front lines in February of 1942 and were used by the troops in the Battle of Stalingrad. During the War, 9,799 M72's served in reconnaissance and dispatch detachments, and were also used to evacuate the wounded from battle fields.

After the war the factory continued producing motorcycles with sidecars and built over 3 million outfits. People who laid the foundation of the factory would have never imagined that 70 years later this factory would remain the only sidecar motorcycle manufacturer in the world and Ural would become a cult motorcycle.  

We dedicate the Anniversary Edition M70 to those who built the first M72's.   

2012 Changes  

The key word for 2012 changes is - incremental. We've got a few technical changes that might not be too visible on the surface, but make the bikes easier to service and improve further the quality of some of the components.  About the surface, by the way, there are changes as well, we are switching to powder paint wherever possible instead of using the liquid paints. Good for durability. 

Expect some very modest price increases as well. 

Ural T  will keep the $9,999 price tag, but 2012 models will loose the maroon pinstripes and knee grips on the gas tank for cleaner look. Also, in 2012 the T will be offered in two colors: flat black of flat OD. There are still some 2011 T's at the dealers, so if you like the look of the flat black with maroon pinstripes, contact your dealer to reserve one of the remaining 2011's.

Patrol T gloss olive paint is also to be discontinued for 2012 as we are switching to flat OD and flat black for this model. Only a handful left of 2011 Patrol T in OD gloss.

There will be one new color for Gear Up: Forest Fog. This paint is a mixture of several colors in a secret proportion (so secret, that even those who mix the colors don't know the exact recipe) with hues from deep green to steel to black...with flat black trim it's the sharpest looking Gear Up ever!  

2012 models are slated to arrive at the dealers in January.

Annual Dealer Meeting at IMWA in Redmond

Every year dealers from across the country (and around the world!) come to Little Irbit here in Redmond, WA to get together and catch up with the team IMWA on company news, on what's in works for the following year and certainly the traditional vodka party that we have at the end of every dealer meeting....:-)

This year we had the biggest turn out ever with many old and new dealers. We had over 60 people from US, Canada and even New Zealand! Also for the first time we organized a sidecar training course for the dealers with professional certified sidecar instructors from the local Evergreen Safety Council. Every single dealer that took the course reported that they learned a good deal about sidecar driving, including some of the dealers with lifetime experience of riding (and selling!) sidecars.
