Man has great power of speech, but the greater part thereof is empty and deceitful. The animals have little, but that little is useful and true; and better is a small and certain thing than a great falsehood.

It has been long accepted that the close relationship between humans and dogs comes from a lengthy history of teamwork and companionship that goes back to our earliest ancestors. New evidence in DNA analyses suggests that dogs may have been domesticated by humans as long as 100,000 years ago. In fact, human beings' relationship with dogs may have given us a significant survival advantage. With their exceptional hearing they warned us of danger. With their advanced sense of smell, they helped us track and hunt for food. And sometimes, our canine friends loyally protect us with senses that defy explanation. There has never been a shortage of hounds at Sentinel Ranch, but nobody can deny that a shepherd-mix named Popo may have been the most heroic of them all. Popo belonged to the Herrera family, comprised of Jose Herrera (ranch foreman and polo teammate,) his wife and the first youngsters in what would eventually become a brood of eleven children.
One day, while several members of the Herrera family were talking and visiting with Peter Hurd, a ranch truck began to roll backward toward one of the Herrera children who was playing on the ground. Seeing that the humans weren't paying attention, Popo, decided to take things into his own paws. Grabbing the baby's diaper in his teeth, Popo dragged the baby out of the path of the moving vehicle. Popo earned himself a juicy steak that night! No wonder they call him "man's best friend." |
Lightning Hits Hurd~La Rinconada Gallery The Gallery suffered a direct hit during a dramatic lightning storm on Aug. 2nd. The strike fried a computer, the phones and satellite TV in the Gallery Guest wing, set off the gallery's alarm and sent a false fire alarm to the Carrizozo fire department. Through it all, the visitors to the gallery stayed calm and maintained a good sense of humor. Let's just hope that lightning doesn't strike the same place twice! |
