Dear Friends, Clients and Guests of Sentinel Ranch,
The Summer monsoons have arrived here in San Patricio, bringing with them the excitement and drama that is so inspirational to the artists of the Hondo Valley. Just yesterday, in fact, a thrilling storm surprised us with 2 inches of rain in 20 minutes! Of course, after the storm comes the rainbow and if legend is true, there must surely be gold on our polo field!
This area's volatile weather can be stunning. Surely, it was this "exciting union of sky and earth" that compelled Peter Hurd to choose the Hondo Valley for his home. Only an artist could describe it like this:
"The rainy season comes to us in July and August ...The first rain that hangs like vaporous gauze from a cumulous cloud may be followed within an hour by the roaring crest of a chocolate-colored torrent. And in contrast to the terror of flood water the intimate murmur of an irrigation acequia is a comforting sound that to me belongs with the beginning of my memory. How can water, a substance so commonplace elsewhere, seem so different here? Perhaps again it is the light of this region which, when reflected from it or mingled with it completely transmutes it. It may become pure quicksilver lying in pools on the desert floor after a rain or somber gold that fills a stock tank at dusk; another time it is a sheet of dull lead beneath an approaching norther. Or it may be mere illusion as when in full daylight one sees a mirage floating above the baked plains: a lake of flickering tinsel across which the warm air vibrates and in whose mirror surfaces nonexistent castles, trees, Arab caravans are reflected." ~Peter Hurd
As always we thank you for your support and hope you will come see us soon!

"Silver Veil" by Henriette Wyeth-Hurd
It is always an exciting day when a new work arrives at the Gallery and even more so when the painting is an original that none of us has ever seen before! During Peter and Henriette's busy working years, many paintings were sold before they had been photographed or documented. We are thrilled to have this classic example of Henriette's still-life work, featuring the iris for which she was so well known.
"I suppose I sing the praises of the obvious, but I believe in those things. I love obvious things, I love obvious rich colors, I love gold, I love diamonds, windowpanes; I love all of the exquisite variations of color, lilacs, roses, all of the transcendental rainbows, all of the lyric things that are supposed to be so obvious, so banal, no one paints them any more." ~Henriette Wyeth

New Mexico Magazine features San Patricio & the Hondo Valley Lesley S. King visits Sentinel Ranch for her "King of the Road" Segment
In the early Spring of 2009, we were excited to be visited by Lesley S. King and her mother who wanted to feature the Hondo Valley in Lesley's very popular "King of the Road" series. During her visit, Lesley interivewed Michael as well as several other of the Valley's residents. She also shot video footage that is included in her online version of the article. Look for Michael and some familiar San Patiricio sites in the August 2009 issue of New Mexico Magazine. You may view Lesley's video at http://www.nmmagazine.com/kingoftheroad_sanpatricio_aug09.php. Many thanks to Lesley and her very sweet Mom for this fabulous exposure! |
Remembering the 2008 Rio Ruidoso Flood
When it started to rain in the middle of the night on July 27th of this year, you could almost hear a collective gasp from the Valley residents as we all recalled this date last year. In the early morning hours, the locals awoke to a roaring sound, much like a passing train. The roar, it turned out, could be traced to the Rio Ruidoso which is usually a barely-audible trickle of water.
It has taken a year for our amazing Ranch Guys, Albert Chavez and Gerardo Medina (along with independent contractors) to repair and restore the damage to the Ranch. Although this wasn't the biggest flood the Ranch has experienced, it was enough to take down Cottonwoods and necessitate repairs to fences, irrigation ditches, roads and irrigated pastures. On that fateful day, the river flowed at 2,500 CFS (cubic feet per second.) As you can see from the picture on the right, the water level was approximately 10 feet higher than normal. Now you can imagine the flood of 1965 which flowed at 5,500 CFS!
Although there was some damage to the Ranch, there were many people in Ruidoso and Ruidoso Downs who suffered much more and are still trying to recover. We would like to express our gratitude and appreciation to FEMA and to the many people at the USDA and NRCS who have helped us with their support this past year.

Conspiracy theorists have debated for years the truth behind rumors of America's secret societies. Well, it seems that there is one secret society that is relatively unknown to those scholars...the SAIHMAA (Society for the Amelioration and Improvement of Hotel and Motel Art in America.)
There were only two members in this illustrious organization and they had the same initials! Coincidence? I think not.
As the windy goes, Peter Hurd and Paul Horgan created SAIHMAA after noting the bland and repetitive art in their hotel rooms. Peter and Paul pursued their goal of improving this lifeless art with great enthusiasm.
In the late 1950's, Peter Hurd was a member of the White House Historical Commission and made frequent trips to Washington D.C. One night, Peter was being picked up for dinner by his friend C.R. Smith who was the CEO of American Airlines. Peter was not quite ready at the designated pick up time, so he left the hotel door ajar. When C.R. arrived, Pete was finishing shaving in the bathroom. After a few minutes of studying a picture of the Eiffle Tower at sunset, C.R. said, "Pete, have you noticed the art on the wall in here?" True to his Society's code of secrecy, Peter responded, "No C.R., I haven't paid much attention. Is there something wrong with it?" C.R. said, "Well, it's a picture of Paris, but I'll be damned if there isn't a B-17 in flames falling from the sky, a nude redhead climbing down one side of the Eiffel Tower and a dalmation at the bottom of the tower taking a leak." Peter just smiled, "Mission accomplished." | |
