A message from Board Member Mahboob Akhter
When I joined 2-1-1 Orange County in 2007, the organization fielded 64,701 calls that year; we will end 2010 having answered more than 100,000 calls from community members. We knew the needs were steadily growing across all areas, but the demand surged with the economic recession, especially in areas such as shelter, food, rent assistance, and utilities. It has been humbling and painful to see such need across our community’s residents, yet a learning experience for all associated with 2-1-1 Orange County.
In order to meet the challenges, we reformed our business model, restructured our operations, and worked to bring efficiency into day-to-day operations. Compelled by the need to do more with less, our board has been actively involved in the organization wherever they have been needed. We are preparing now for the anticipated growth in call volume in the coming months and continue to add resources to meet the needs – be it human power, technology or funding.
It has been a rewarding experience to know by serving 2-1-1 Orange County I am helping families in need across the county. Spiritually, we know giving is empowering, and even the medical community emphasizes giving is important for happiness and contentment. I invite you to exercise your power of generosity toward the residents of Orange County and make a donation to 2-1-1 Orange County. Make this holiday season special for yourself and for those in need.
“You cannot escape the responsibility of tomorrow by evading it today.”

| CalFresh Food Assistance Program |
2-1-1s across CA take proactive lead to educate the public on the state's refreshed food assistance program
Recently the California Department of Social Services recently unveiled CalFresh, the new name for the California food assistance program and previously referred to as food stamps. CalFresh exudes the togetherness of California, and that all Californians, and especially 211s, are working together to bring healthy eating and living to those who need it most.
 |
“We believe the new logo and slogan better captures our Californian vision -- one that promotes good nutrition for better living and better overall health, ” Kim Belshé, Secretary of the Health and Human Services Agency. |
Currently, 2.3 million Californians receive CalFresh benefits. Unfortunately, there are over 5.2 million Californians total that are income eligible, leaving almost 3 million people unserved in our state. Many people are currently experiencing food insecurity and hunger instead of participating in CalFresh. Furthermore, an additional $6.9 billion of economic activity a year would be generated in California if there were full participation in the program.
As 2-1-1 educates our callers about CalFresh and introduce the purpose behind the new name, we have the opportunity to continue reducing the stigma of nutritional assistance to encourage eligible Californians to take part in this critical program.
John Wagner, Director of the California Department of Social Services, “We are giving the Food Stamp program a new name which better captures California’s way of life and the fresh food we all enjoy in this state."

| Volunteer Spotlight: Justin Meyers |
 |
Since our volunteer program began in 2009, more than 100 volunteers have donated their time to serve thousands of people through 2-1-1 Orange County. Volunteers play a pivotal role in 2-1-1’s daily operations by providing referrals to clients, adding new agencies to our database, and disseminating information at community events. This month, we want to present one of our star volunteers: Justin Myers.
Justin started by doing simple data entry and updating our database of services. But we soon found that his key strength was communicating with local agencies, and gave him the lead on a major project – updating the contact information of all the Executive Directors listed in the database – a task that involved reaching out to approximately 1,500 service providers. |
While overseeing two interns who helped him, Justin got the job done with style.
“Every time I offer him a task or a project, he goes above and beyond what I expect,” says Dayann Shepherd, 2-1-1’s Lead Resource Specialist. “He does more research than we ask for, and offers different perspectives on how to get things done. I have been very impressed with his commitment to our agency.”
Even after the completion of the large database project, Justin decided to continue his volunteer service as Holiday Services Coordinator. “I’ve been researching and following up on available programs, but it’s difficult because the agencies are closing up due to their own challenges making ends meet,” Justin says of the challenging job. “I’ve been scouring newspapers and magazines, cold-calling agencies…I have had a bit of luck with that.”
Without him, Dayann says, 2-1-1 Orange County would not have had as comprehensive a list to refer clients to holiday services. “The service landscape is bleak, but I’m confident we are finding what few resources do exist,” she says.
Despite the challenge, Justin enjoys what he does for 2-1-1 Orange County.
“It’s been a very rewarding experience and it has opened my eyes to a lot of things I didn’t know about,” Justin says. “I grew up a pretty privileged, sheltered life in Newport Beach, and it’s been great to look outside the gates of where I grew up and be able to help someone else.”

Be sure to tune into KTBN on Friday, January 7 at 10:00 am or Monday, January 10 @ 8:30 am to learn more about 2-1-1 Orange County and Share Our Selves (SOS).
We're excited to share this public relations opportunity with SOS, our great partner in service. Located in Costa Mesa, SOS provides for the needs of homeless and low-income individuals and families and is one of the most comprehensive support agencies in Orange County. All services are free and include medical and dental care, counseling, case management, food, clothing, financial assistance, legal aid, and special holiday programs.
The integral safety net services that SOS provides to the community are more important than ever. Before residents are directed to agencies like SOS, our call handlers are able to provide "mini" case management consultations. This ensures callers are given the most useful and accurate referrals targeted to their needs. This year, SOS received more referrals from 2-1-1 OC than any other agency, a testament to their breadth of service offering and capacity to serve. |

2-1-1 Orange County’s second State of the Agency Annual Meeting was held on October 26, 2010. Board President Jeff Lutz shared that the agency has experienced a 57% increase in calls as more people face the loss of their jobs and health care benefits. This is made more evident by the 1014% increase in calls from people seeking general medical care.

A resounding applause for our keynote speaker, Jeffrey Wilcox, CEO of Third Sector Learning and Board Chairs Academy. Jeffrey shared his insight on how we should be looking at the next generation of volunteer leadership for nonprofit boards. |
