Residents & Businesses - Making a Difference at the Senior Center
|
Submitted by Thom Schneider, Senior Director Isn't it amazing what a little paint, some flowers and lunch can do to brighten one's day! The Springfield Township Senior/Community Center was the recipient of three random acts of kindness from area businesses and organizations.
As part of the Great American Cleanup, Dan Deitsch and volunteers from Finneytown Athletic Association K-5 Cheerleading Squad spent their Saturday afternoon removing the dying plantings from two of our flower beds, replacing them with new shrubs, knock-out roses and daylilies. Dan and the cheerleaders not only provided all the design work and labor, they also raised the funds needed for the plantings as well! What a difference these two refreshed planting beds have made for our center.
The Senior/Community Center was also the recipient of another face lift - this one inside. The leadership team from Sherwin William's floor coating division in Carthage offered a day of labor and all the materials needed to paint two of our activity rooms, brightening up these tired spaces for all of us to enjoy. This generous donation not only makes the daily experience of our seniors a more pleasant one, but it has also made these rooms more desirable for residents and organizations renting space from the Community Center for their activities, creating more revenue to allow the Township to continue operating the Senior/Community Center.
Sunrise Assisted Living in Finneytown also stepped up to the plate, donating a luncheon to our members in the month of May. This lunch allowed us to raise over $150 to put towards our day-to-day Senior Center operations.
The global economic downturn has made individuals, organizations and government agencies alike look inward, finding ways to stretch budgets and cut costs. But even with these challenges that face us all, these three activities show that the generosity of the American public and business community is still alive and well. These partnerships are going to become more important in the years to come as we try to find those creative ways to reduce costs and find alternative sources of funding, even in the face of increased demand for services.
The Springfield Township Senior/Community Center thanks the Finneytown Athletic Association, Sherwin-Williams Company and Sunrise Assisted Living for their time and treasure and for the example they set in the need to be an active participant in the success of and continued vitality of our home - Springfield Township!

The Art of Enameling |
 |
NEW CLASS FOR SENIOR ADULTS! (*Membership to the Senior Center Required)
Jane Austing, a member of the Ohio Valley Enameling Guild, will be offering a weekly class on the Art of Enameling on Fridays from 10 a.m. to Noon beginning June 12th. Enameling on copper is an ancient art form. One of the better known examples is the priceless Faberge eggs made for the Czars of Russia. The process consists of applying colored powders to pretreated copper forms and then baking these in a kiln at about 1500 degrees for a short period of time. This causes the powders to melt and fuse themselves into a glasslike finish on the copper. This class will allow members the opportunity to make enameled jewelry and small art pieces. Space is limited to five participants for each class. Cost is $5 per class plus supplies, which range from 50 cents to $2.50, depending on the size of the piece. *You must be a member of the Springfield Township Senior Center. Membership is open to senior adults 55 years or older. Annual dues for Township residents cost $15 per year. Non-resident membership dues are $20 per year. View other programs offered at the Senior Center Here For more information, check out the Township's website, call 522-1154 or email tschneider@springfieldtwp.org.
