The Cellist of Sarajevo chosen as First Year Reading Program book for the Class of 2015

Freshmen Reading Program BookAs part of the ninth annual First Year Reading Program, all incoming first year students as well as transfer and exchange students will be reading and participating in faculty-led discussions of Steven Galloway's novel, The Cellist of Sarajevo.

'The Cellist of Sarajevo is a gripping portrait of a city under siege, the small acts of humanity that come to renew it, and from the ashes, the rising, redemptive grace notes of one musician.' (Penguin Books)

Throughout the first semester, programs related to the book will be offered. In September, the book's author, Steven Galloway, will be coming to campus to give an Assembly Series lecture as well as to interact with students in smaller group settings. Freshmen will have the opportunity to continue their exploration of The Cellist of Sarajevo and its themes through an eight-week one-credit course offered from 10p.m. to midnight in the residence halls. Additionally, a session on the First Year Reading Program and The Cellist of Sarajevo will be offered for parents during Parents Weekend in October.

For more information on this novel, and the First Year Reading Program, visit frp.wustl.edu.

Student Technology Services Helps Students Get Connected

Within hours of arriving at Washington University in St. Louis, many freshmen face the task of setting up their computers and other devices that will help keep them connected to campus news and events, as well as to loved ones back home. Student Technology Services (STS) can help.  STS is dedicated to assisting WUSTL students with their technology needs.  They also act as a student advocate for technology initiatives on campus.

STS urges incoming freshman to visit the STS website and take special note of the sections "New to WashU" and "Get Connected" under the Main Menu. Here students can find out helpful information about what technological resources are available at Washington University in St. Louis, as well as step-by-step instructions about getting connected.

If freshmen need help with technology issues during move-in, the STS Help Desk has special hours dedicated to working with new students. Located along the storefronts of Gregg Hall near the clock tower on the South 40, STS is staffed with fulltime Information Services and Technology staff and trained student employees during these days and times:

  • Thursday, August 25, 8:30a.m. - 5:00p.m.
  • Friday, August 26, 8:30a.m. - 6:00p.m.
  • Saturday, August 27, 10:00a.m. - 6:00p.m.
  • Sunday, August 28, 12:00p.m. - 6:00p.m.

In addition, STS sets up "Remote Help Desks" in the lobbies of the freshman dormitories (Danforth, Dardick, Eliot, Koenig, Park and Umrath) for onsite help. Each of these help desks is staffed by a professional from WashU's Information Services and Technology Department, plus Student Technology Coordinators (STCs). STCs are students hired by STS to live in the residential colleges, maintain the computer labs in these buildings, and help answer technology questions and concerns. During the first two days of move in, the Remote Help Desks will be open:

  • Thursday, August 25, 1:00p.m. - 5:00p.m.
  • Friday, August 26, 9:00a.m. - 1:00p.m.
