Dear Parents,

Summer is here once again which means your kids are playing outside more, swimming, and (hopefully) having fun.  Read on for links to summer safety tips, advice on insect repellent, and newly accepted insurance plans. Also, remember to schedule your child's annual Health Maintenance exam before the end of summer rush!
Summer Safety

Although the weather hasn't been cooperating, it is summertime and this season is associated with a huge increase in preventable injuries to children.  According to Children's Memorial Hospital's Injury Prevention and Research Center, the number of kids in the United States who become sick and die of virtually every known childhood illness is dwarfed by the number of youngsters who die or are crippled by injuries - what we call "accidents."  Follow this link to CMH's website to view safety videos about bicycles, bee stings, playgrounds, pools, and more.

More appointment times available for physical exams

Please don't forget that we encourage yearly Health Maintenance exams for all children.  Currently you can schedule these exams at any office starting at 8:45am in addition to evening hours one day a week at each office location.  Lake Shore Pediatrics strongly discourages the use of "minute-clinics" and school-based "station method" exams, as these do not provide any continuity of care.  They do not allow adequate health and behavior risk assessment or private patient discussion, and are poor environments to detect subtle abnormalities on the physical examination.  There is more to "getting a physical" than just listening to the chest!

We hope you have a fun and safe summer.  Thanks once again for your support and allowing us to be your Medical Home.  Please forward this email to anyone you think may be interested in becoming a patient at Lake Shore Pediatrics.

Sincerely,
The Doctors and Nurses of Lake Shore Pediatrics

Insect Repellent

"Bug sprays" should contain approximately 10% DEET in order to give 2 hours of effective protection against mosquitos and tics.  DEET is safe to use on all kids starting at 2 months of age.  Newer products that contain picaridin are also effective at bite prevention.  Please see our website articles here for more information.
