child coughing Whooping Cough Outbreak

The incidence of whooping cough cases has risen  dramatically nationwide, and there are currently clusters of cases in suburban Cook and Lake Counties.   Whooping cough is a severe respiratory illness caused by the Bordetella pertussis bacterium, and the acellular pertussis vaccine is part of the childhood vaccination schedule.  However, immunity wanes over time and 98% of adults are no longer immune to whooping cough.  To help prevent the spread of whooping cough especially to newborn babies, parents can and should receive a pertussis booster shot: TdaP.  This booster is routinely given to 11 year-olds at their Health Maintenance exams.  Please discuss this vaccine with your physician to help protect newborn infants everywhere.
Visit us at LakeShorePeds.com for additional news updates, staff profiles, and seasonal health information.  Remember, make an appointment to get a flu vaccine soon!  And thank you again for your commitment and referrals.

Sincerely,

The Nurses and Doctors at Lake Shore Pediatrics
