Whooping Cough Outbreak The incidence of whooping cough cases has risen dramatically nationwide, and there are currently clusters of cases in suburban Cook and Lake Counties. Whooping cough is a severe respiratory illness caused by the Bordetella pertussis bacterium, and the acellular pertussis vaccine is part of the childhood vaccination schedule. However, immunity wanes over time and 98% of adults are no longer immune to whooping cough. To help prevent the spread of whooping cough especially to newborn babies, parents can and should receive a pertussis booster shot: TdaP. This booster is routinely given to 11 year-olds at their Health Maintenance exams. Please discuss this vaccine with your physician to help protect newborn infants everywhere.
