Welcome to 2012January 2012

LastellaSalve,

Welcome to 2012!

We hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday season full of friends, family, food and of course great wine.

As winter closes in and new year's resolutions take hold we are taking time to look back at 2011.

2011 was a very exciting and rewarding year for LaStella. From a business perspective many things went right and we approach 2012 on a high. In the vineyard several of our vineyards planted in years past are finally producing fruit and around nine new acres were planted at the vineyard we call Selona across the street from the LaStella winery. In the winery 2011 has been a very good harvest and we look forward to showing you the white wines this year, and the reds in years to follow.

In this issue:
  • James wraps up 2011 in our message from the winemaker,
  • statistics from our 2011 vintage harvest,
  • a busy winter season of events is ahead of us,
  • and lastly a quick summary of some of the terrific charities we supported in 2011.

Lastly a shout-out, kudos and thanks to our friends at Fraiche Restaurant in West Vancouver and chef Alvarez for the dinner they put on last night with some of our wines. From start to finish it was an experience to delight all the senses. We've posted a few pictures of the evening on our Facebook page.

As always, we wish you happy drinking!

Ciao!

Winemaker's Note

Every year expectations are high as the grapes make their way from the vineyard to the winery. And every year we as winery people must rise to the occasion to meet those expectations.

James 2011Mercifully after six to eight weeks of incredibly intense 15 hour days the sprint slows to a nice walking pace as Christmas approaches. The wines now have to be stabilized or put through malolactic fermentation. Reds have been put into barrels for their slow maturation process and decisions turn to blends, single vineyard designations, bottling for spring releases, and monitoring of 2010 reds.

Just as with decisions at harvest, decisions today in the winery will have tremendous repercussions down the road. I find this part of the process to be some of the most exciting moments in our craft. It is at this stage where we put the final stamp on our identity as a winery and define our wines amongst our competitors. This vintage will be among our best and our customers should be excited.

Happy New Year to all our loyal customers and hopefully we can visit with all of you in 2012.

Stats2011 Statistics

Production in 2011 is up, but only a little bit

Now that the harvest is done andCabernet Sauvignon dusted we can lay out our harvest statistics for 2011. The good news is that there is a little more Moscato D'Osoyoos this year so perhaps it will last past July 15th before it sells out.

  • Pinot Gris: 15 tons
  • Muscat: 4.8 tons
  • Chardonnay: 5 tons
  • Merlot (pressed off the skins immediately for rosato production): 8.3 tons
  • Sangiovese: 1.7 tons
  • Merlot (Maestoso block): 4.1 tons
  • Merlot (Allegretto block): 3.3 tons
  • Cabernet Sauvignon:  4 tons
  • Merlot: 10.6 tons

We're delighted to say that production is up slightly for whites! however red production will be down slightly. Overall we think the fruit quality is up as well and look forward to one of our best vintages ever!

The 2011 whites are currently being stabilized and will be bottled in March. Keep your eyes peeled for the official release near the start of spring. As for 2010 whites there is still a small amount of Leggiero Un-Oaked Chardonnay and LaStellina Rosato
