2008 Maestoso | October 2011 | |
Salve,
It seems fitting that as we start to harvest the fruit that will become the 2011 Maestoso that we release the 2008 edition. Maestoso is sourced from our estate vineyard on the slopes just immediately south of the winery on the Osoyoos Lake Bench. If you stop by the vineyard take a wander through one of the lowest yielding vineyards (around 1 ton an acre) in North America. Watch your step though, the soil is dry and the slope is quite steep.
Now that Thanksgiving is in the rear-view mirror we enter fall in earnest; it's time to start bringing out the big reds and get serious about some food and wine!
In this issue:
As always, we wish you happy drinking!
Ciao!

2008 Maestoso Merlot Release
A true icon of the Okanagan
Maestoso is the flagship of LaStella, a massive, monumental wine that is consistently one of the greats of the valley. Like many icon wines from around the world it is a combination of a fantastic vineyard site, meticulous vineyard management and uncompromising winemaking.
95 Points - John Schreiner "...This is another Merlot, a big, hedonistic wine with dramatic aromas of blueberries and sweet red fruit. On the palate, the wine is hugely rich, with every-changing flavours of spice, game meats, sage and blueberry. This is a wine that almost struts its personality."
We've kept the the price the same for the 2008 version of Maestoso at $90. Orders are best placed on our website. If you want you can also contact us by email or phone (604-697-0989).

Notes on the 2008 Maestoso!
In our efforts to build up this already breathtaking and astoundingly rich wine we blended in small amounts of Merlot from our Feuille d' Or vineyard in the golden mile. The 2008 compared to previous vintages is slightly lower in alcohol, has slightly more present tannins and the acidity is slightly higher.
Always opaque in color there is a pronounced nose of game, cocoa, cedar and café mocha. Huge mouth-coating creamy ripe tannins build to an astonishing finish lasting well over a minute.
Food Pairing:
You ought to find the best cut of meat you can and do a simple preparation to let this wine speak to you and show off all that is has to offer.

2011 Leggiero Preview
Next summer's freshest white?
The Chardonnay we are using for Leggiero this year (2011) was sourced from the NK'Mip Band in north Oliver (Tuc el' Nuit area). We got block 'T' which is on the east side of their vineyard and the clone was 76 and the root stock was SO4. The vines are approximately 20 years old and the soil is a mixture of sand and sandy loam with scattered river rock throughout. The block was 112 rows long and we get our fruit starting from the south end of the block which is the ripest end.
We harvested a total of 6.788 tons with a Brix level of 22.0, ph of 3.2, and T/A (Total Acidity) of 6.4. Potential alcohol is 13.0 %. The fruit has very nice crisp apple and citrus flavors, good acidity, and was some of the cleanest fruit I have ever seen in the Okanagan Valley. There was zero rot in the entire lot.
I'm anticipating a nice clean ferment likely in two lots with several different strains of yeasts. As mentioned potential alcohol should be right on 13% which should be a nice light crisp package!
James Cambridge
The 2011 Leggiero will be released in Spring 2012. There remains a small amount of 2010 Leggiero for puchase on our website.
