Greetings!

On January 1st, 1987, Peregrine was hatched. As we start our 24th year, I've often been asked what makes us the success we are today - SERVICE! It's our personal service that keeps you coming back as well as sending us referrals.

5Below

Back in January, I visited one of my favorite stores, Five Below. If you're not familiar with them, it's like a dollar store on steroids! I purchased a small FM transmitter for my iPhone. It worked great for a few weeks, then I started having some problems. I visited their website and it clearly stated that to keep their costs down, returns could be made within 14 days. Having passed that mark, I figured it couldn't hurt to use their online contact form to see if I could have a replacement.

Much to my surprise, less than 24 hours later, I received an email apologizing for any inconvenience along with a request for my shipping address. They were going to have the manufacturer send me a brand new unit and send me a gift certificate...all this for a $5.00 purchase!

Now, that's customer service. And, when you visit their stores, associates actually welcome you and ask if they can assist you! When's the last time that happened to you, in any retail store?

How does this help them? It'll keep me going back and I'll spread the word about Five Below. Hey, I'm doing it now to all of you, aren't I. What better marketing tool than a personal referral?

About 90% of all our new business comes from referrals from folks like you. What better way to let us know we're doing our job.

So...how's your referral business? What can we do to help you? Let us know...

Be Safe...Robert

 Learning to Fly

April showers bring May flowers - or so they say. So far this year the end of March and beginning of April have been more like July and August, but I'm not complaining.

So, back to the showers and what everyone needs for a little rain - an UMBRELLA. This is an item that is needed all year round. It features a large imprint area which can promote your business or special event. You can never have to many umbrellas. I know we have one in each car, a few in the house, the girls carry them in their school bags and, if lost, someone else is bound to use it as well.

There are all different sizes, shapes, colors and styles of umbrellas and I will be featuring many of them in the next "Specials" issue. So stay tuned and every time a little rain falls, just think, someone could be showing off your logo!

Marketing within your own business

We always talk about marketing to your clients, or your potential customers. When's the last time you marketed to your own Associates? Staff? Employees?

Do they all know what your business does? Do they know all the services you can provide? Are you sure? Have you asked them? Or, like many, you just assume that they all know what you do???

Maybe it's time for a staff meeting. And when you do, make it interesting. We have several ideas on how to accomplish that...call us if you're interested.

In the mean time, list all the services you offer, ask your associates to do the same. See who's list is longer. You might just be surprised at the results!

Business Cards ANew business cards
ANew Properties- Michael Batley 215-464-6098

There's been a trend in the design of full color business cards -- using the front of the card for just the logo. Think about it, if you have a great design, why not show it off? We've always felt that business cards are, in many instances, the first piece of advertising and marketing you provide a client. So grab their attention!

ANew Properties' business card is not different. With a cool logo, we utilized the entire front of the card for their logo and slogan. And, since printing on the back of full color cards is free, we used that space for all the important stuff like name, address and contact information.

Color me what?

Ever wonder how they change the color of a shirt someone is wearing, but the photo seems the same? It's not that difficult if you have the right software and the know-how!

shirt-pinkIn the left, we have a woman out for the nice bikeshirt-blueride wearing a pretty pink shirt. But, say the client wants to show off the new light blue color they just added to their line. Instead of re-hiring the model, photographer, makeup artist and the rest of the crew, we can easily change the color to anything we want!

#1) First, we 'mask' out the shirt, then soften the edges. This chooses just the shirt itself by using the pen and lasso tools in PhotoShop.

#2) Next, we take out the pink using the 'desaturation' filter, causing the shirt to go all grey (not shown here).

#3) Finally, we choose the color we want (here, we picked a nice bright blue), filled in our masked area and used a layer mode called color.

Digital Photography
Composition

Back in the old days of film, it could take one roll of 36 exposures to get one great shot! We would have to set up the subject to fill the frame just right, then use from 5-7 different exposure settings knowing that one of them should be right! Then, reset the composition and shoot another 5-7.

With today's digital systems, exposures are kept on a flash drive so there's no worry about film. This means, composing the shot becomes the main focus (no pun intended!). So how do you do it? Use the 'rule of thirds'.

#1) Imagine creating lines in your view finder (and some cameras alreadyhorse-2offerhorse-1this feature) that break up your view into thirds like shown. Then, try putting the main focus of your photograph on one of the lines or the intersecting points. See, having your main object dead center can create a very static looking photograph.

#2) When shooting people, focus on the face, but then move thekids-2camera so there's not so much 'air time' above the subject. We tend to tunnel vision on the faces and forget we can recompose to get more of them.

#3) Create the photograph so the viewer's eyes stay in the picture, not drawn off of it.

Shoot, shoot and shoot some more. That's how you get better. And if you want, send me your photos for some hints and advice!

Next month, resolution!
