From the nest

Greetings!

Technology, what an amazing thing. Back when Peregrine was hatched, you didn't use computers for design work. The original "cut and paste" method used light tables, blue line pencils, x-acto blades, waxers and french curves. These were the high-tech devices of the day. Then came our first Apple MAC computer -- the SE.
SE
Phew, with blazing speeds of an 8MHz processor, 4MB of RAM (8MB with software like RamDoubler!) and a 40MB hard drive, man, we were fast, real fast! This computer was so much better than its predecessor that required you to load in a floppy, download one program, pop out the floppy and replace it with a blank so you could save your document!

iPhoneToday, we now have the 3rd Generation iPhone 3GS. Compare this with a 620MHz processor (7,750% faster), 256MB of RAM (6,400% faster) and 16GB of storage (40,000% more)! All this in a phone that takes 3MB photos, includes a video camera, email and web surfing capabilities, Twitter, YouTube, FaceBook and text messaging. Not to mention there are now over 50,000 apps you can download -- many for free. Oh yea, you can even make phone calls!

What's this all mean. Stop and think about it. Our kids have no idea as to the technological breakthroughs afforded them in the past few years. But then again, maybe 'our generation' didn't appreciate what it was to go from radio to television. And finally, my girls are thrilled to be living in the 2000's...'cause back in the 1950's, the whole world was black and white!

 Learning to Fly

Since my section in this newsletter is called "Learning to Fly", I'm wondering if its possible to fly backwards. Time is passing so fast. It seems school just let out for the summer and the stores are already promoting "Back to School"....WAIT....can't we just slow down and enjoy life instead of always running towards the next event.

I encourage you all to take some time away from your busy work schedules to stop this summer and enjoy your family and friends. Work will wait, but kids grow up, parents get older and friends move away. Enjoy the moment, take a deep breath and just sit quietly. Look around you and re-evaluate your priorities, spend time on what is really important. Take a vacation, even if it is only a long weekend, leave work early and enjoy an afternoon with the neighbors. Don't let life fly by because flying backwards just isn't an option.

Keep your eyes open for this July's Sales & Specials flyer featuring "It's All In The Bag".

Direct Mail

Still one of the best marketing strategies out there if you know how to develop one. It should be noted that a successful campaign will typically have a 2-3% return rate with better ones as high as 5% or more!

Here are some basic tips to remember:

The List: Always purchase multiple-use lists. One time lists can have 'secret' addresses that signal when a list has been used more than once.

The demographics of the list are key to a successful campaign. This can include age, sex, income, homeowners vs. renters and age of home, education, geographic area, type of business, etc.. The more detailed the list, the greater response rate. And remember, your own in-house list can be combined with the purchased list with duplicates removed.

The Mailer: There are many types of mailers that can be used from post cards to tri-fold brochures to enclosed folders. The least expensive would be the 6 x 4.25 post card. This is the largest post card size that the post office will allow at post card rates. Anything larger can be mailed using either standard or first class rates and can have a greater impact due to its larger size.

The piece needs to be eye-catching. Remember, we only have a few seconds to grab the recipients attention and then hold them to read the mailer. Use color and photographs. Remember to make the message simple and easy to understand quickly! Most of all, don't forget a 'Call to Action'!

Third time's the charm: One of the best kept secrets is that every campaign should include at least three mailers. They don't all have to be the same, but the look and feel of the piece needs to stay consistent.

Finally, what needs to be remembered is that no one marketing idea is a catchall. Direct mail should be combined with email marketing newsletters, a well designed website and above all, a great personality that answers that call to action!

Kircher logospotlight
Kircher Electric - 267-864-7510

Kircher Electric came to us as a newly formed residential and commercial electrical service business with years of experience. Since the beginning we've developed their:
  • Business Card: their first form of advertising.
  • Website: using the Content Management System (CMS), they'll be able to manage the content including text and photos on their website.
  • Direct Mail Post Card: used to announce the new website to their existing customer base.
  • Email Marketing Newsletter: to keep their current and future customers up-to-date on their latest services as well as tips on how to save energy for their homes and businesses.
  • Uniforms: for on-the-job advertising. Why not take advantage of some custom T-shirts to promote your business when ever you can?
Since their beginnings, they've built their residential customer base quickly. And, with some recent large commercial contracts, they are well on their way to becoming a very successful business!

We developed several layouts that individuals can choose from. Through the on-line ordering form or direct phone calls, we'll create the custom card and either email or fax a proof. After approval, the business cards are shipped direct to the instructor.

This service is offered to many of our clients making it easy to order new cards. And with the quick turn-around in typesetting, many orders are placed the same day!

Right from the Horse's mouth...
horse-before
If a picture is worth a thousand words, then how much is a re-touched photo worth?

Here, we have the before and aftehorse-afterr photos of a horse we did for a product shoot. As you can see on the left, there are several things we needed to 'repair':

  • Fence was in poor shape and needed painting
  • Fence behind horse was broken
  • Too many whiskers around the nose, eyes and forehead
  • Color needed saturating
  • Rope leading from horse needed to be removed
  • Leather in Bridle was faded in color

There was a lot of work involved with re-touching the photo, but as you can see, the results made our client, very, very happy!

KOB website
Last month we talked about the design of KOB Installations' logo and business card. As promised, here is their website.

Although KOB specializes in the installation of metal roofing and siding, they also provide other contracting services. The home page offers a rotating slide show of 5 photos showing what metal roofing can look like.

The internal pages offers more information on their services. Eventually, as they build their photo portfolio, we'll add those pictures. Another special feature we build into our Content Management System (CMS) is the ability to have thumbnails clickable to open a separate window showing a larger image. You'll find that on the Services page. Just click on any of the thumbnail images!

Smoke Detectors DO SAVE LIVES!
Fire Safety Upgrade for Older Homes

smoke detectorWireless Interconnected Smoke Detectors are a great way to improve the fire safety of older homes. In many communities, today's building code requires a smoke detector on each level and in each bedroom. They must be wired together so that when one senses smoke, they all make noise. People who are asleep in their beds will know immediately if smoke is detected anywhere in the home. This is particularly important if the smoke is in the basement or other remote area. You won't hear the detector when you are asleep. When you are in your deepest level of sleep it will take a detector in your bedroom to wake you.

Wireless detectors transmit signals to each other up to 200'. They are battery operated and therefore do not require wires to install. Additional wireless smoke detectors can be added to expand your system at any time. The batteries must be changed annually or whenever the detector begins to "chirp".
 house fire
Knowing when smoke is present in you home at the earliest possible time will give you the greatest amount of time to escape. We encourage you to invest in your family's safety, particularly if you don't have a smoke detector in your bedroom or if your detectors don't alert each other. As a minimum, install at least two, one in the basement and one in your bedroom. Continue to add detectors until you meet the building code standard.

Wireless smoked detectors have made "stand alone" battery smoke detectors obsolete. Don't wait until it is too late.

The above information was provided to us by Ed Pfeiffer - Warwick Township Fire Marshall. For more information, you may contact him directly.

Final Thoughts...
Who is Your Role Model

Be sure not to peek! You don't want to skew your answer. Try this...

Don't look at the answers:

1) Pick your favorite number between 1-9
2) Multiply by 3 then
3) Add 3, then again Multiply by 3 (I'll wait while you get the calculator....)
4) You'll get a 2 or 3 digit number
5) Add the digits together

Now, with that number, see who your ROLE MODEL is from the list below:

1. Einstein
2. Ronald Reagan
3. Mother Teresa
4. John F. Kennedy
5. Bill Gates (Who?)
6. Gandhi
7. John Wayne
8. Babe Ruth
9. Robert Dorfman
10. Steve Jobs

Okay, okay, so it's fixed. So go ahead and cut/paste the above and replace the #9 answer with your own name. Then send it to friends, family and significant others!
