From the nest
Greetings!
Happy Thanksgiving!
WOW! Thanksgiving is just 27 days away, but according to Kohls, Christmas started the first week of October! There aught to be a law!
This is the official start of the holidays...unless you are a die-hard shopper. That begins when it's 3:00am, you're freezing, you count to find you're 21st in line for that $300 computer special, that's limited to the first 20 shoppers, on Black Friday morning and you left your coffee on the kitchen table! But look at the bright side! I'm sure you got a great parking space!!!
I'm aging myself, but I remember the good ole' days, traveling to my aunt's house, having lots of food and trying to recite a poem about the pilgrims. Today, we take our daughters to mom and dad's house and enjoy a home cooked meal with the family. I hope when they're older, these will be the good ole' days. This is what it's all about. Slow down, enjoy family, good food and friendships. We get so busy with business, running kids from soccer to dance and so on, we forget to stop, take a breath and enjoy life.
So here's to not eating too much, remembering to take home leftovers and from all of us here at Peregrine...Happy Thanksgiving...and be safe!!!
------------------------------------------------------------
P.S. With the holidays fast approaching, I've written a special, sobering article about DUI's throughout the US as well as in our own backyard. Please take a moment to read through it...it's that important.

Printing
Business Card Magnets
In Marketing 101 you probably spoke about the impact of business cards and how they are usually the very first piece of promotional (marketing) materials that a new company obtains.
Now lets take it a step further and keep that business card "hanging" around. Have your business card transferred into a business card magnet. These handy magnets are inexpensive and a great way to keep your name in front of your clients.
I have heard from numerous clients that they use their magnetic cards in all different ways since they stick to refrigerators, electrical panels, file cabinets, etc.. Just yesterday I asked a neighbor for the name of their chimney sweep - his response was that the name and number would be at home sticking to the refrigerator.
Give these a try and make it easy for your customers to remember who you are and how to reach you.
If you don't have a business card that will WOW your customers, stop on in and let us redesign your card and or logo.
500 cards for just $120

Learning to Fly
Last month I wrote about the importance of Relationships. This month I've chosen another "R" word - RESEARCH.
One of the many features that Peregrine offers is due diligence when it comes to finding the best buy for your buck. Not only will we find the right products to help you market your company, but we make sure that it is the best price including unit cost, set-up charges, and shipping.
For example, while looking for an item for a client, I came upon this clock/pencil holder from three different distributors. I ordered samples of each to make sure I was comparing apples to apples. The three items all closely resemble each other and are of the same quality. Here is how their pricing staked up.
Item #1 - $2.99 with no quantity discounts, one-time set-up fee of $56.60.
Item #2 - $4.90 to $4.19 depending on quantity, one-time set-up fee of $40.
Item #3 $5.71 to $4.96 depending on quantity, one-time set-up fee of $45.
So, when buying 100 of these items you could pay $355, $498 or $566. Which would you choose? Pretty much a "given" isn't it.
If you want to get some ideas for holiday gifts, check out our website for ad specialties and wearables or request our Advertising Specialties catalog. There are over 250 products pictured to help generate ideas. Once you narrow it down, Peregrine will jump into research mode and provide you with the best product at the best price.
Be assured that we will not only match you with the right product, we
will also make sure your marketing dollars are spent wisely.
Happy shopping.

Marketing University First Impressions - Phone etiquette
The old adage "you don't get a second chance to make a first impression" is so true. So why aren't phones answered professionally?
This may seem obvious to some, but how many times have you called a company only to be greeted with: "ABC Company, hold please...click", or how about just "ABC Company"? No hello, no nothing!
But, let's not get carried away like this one company did:
"Good morning, thank you for calling ABC Company, the best company in the world, this is John Smith, how may I serve you today"
- Simply adding "Good Morning" makes such a difference. It needs to be bright and cheery! You need to make clients want to call your company. You need to invite them to call back!
- Another trick is to smile before answering. That's right, SMILE! It works. The person on the other end will hear it in your voice.
- If you find you need to put someone on hold, be polite about it and ask their permission.
Here's the final test. Call your office and really listen to how it was answered. If you were a first time caller, were you made to feel welcome?

  Mike Giradi Electric (888) 675-WIRE
Looking for a qualified electrician? Mike Giradi offers you over 23 years experience, is a licensed electrician and from our own personal experience is meticulous about his work.
Here are some suggestions for the fall:
- Get that ceiling fan hung. You know, the one that's been sitting in it's original box in the guest room since you bought it last spring!
- Are you looking to buy yourself a nice flat-screen TV for the holidays? Don't forget, now's the time to run the cable and electrical lines in the wall before you bring it home!!!
- Planning on stringing lots of lights outside for the holidays, how about an outside receptacle? That way, you don't have to keep the garage door or front door cracked open to run that extension cord!
Give Mike a call at (888)675-WIRE and tell him you saw him in our Flights of the Peregrine!

Business Cards JBS Entertainment - (215) 855-6680
JBS entertainment needed two separate business cards. The one for Heather geared towards her wedding planner/creative director position while Joe's leaned towards the entertainment sector. To answer their needs, we created a similar front with name and title changes while offering different backs. And, by the way, there's no extra charge to print on the back!
The Front (left): We
jazzed their logo to appear 3D and utilized a professional photograph.
The Back (below): The one for Heather appeals more towards those getting
married and Joe's stresses his work as a DJ.
Joe's back: Heather's back:

We also created tri-fold brochures for them using the same theme as the front of the cards to keep continuity.
Remember, if you give them a call, let them know where you found them! |
Graphics/Design/Layout
Photo Retouching
Sometimes we need to put a logo on an item when it's really not there. For example, when we design graphics for a truck, we superimpose the artwork on a photo of the vehicle. Now the client can see how it all fits together.
 Here's how it's done!
#1) In this sample we needed a logo placed onto a shirt for an ad. Instead of hiring a professional model, we used a photo from a stock house.
#2) Now you realize there's more to just dropping a graphic onto the shirt. If it was that easy, I wouldn't be writing an article about it!
What causes the problem is although the shirt has curves, shadows and creases, the logo doesn't. So, it's not natural, it doesn't look right.
Through the use of special distortion filters, we can transpose the shadows of the shirt onto the logo.
Take a close look at the bottom of the red cross where "Trauma" and "Services" are. You can see how this looks like a direct screen. And that's the idea!

DUI Related Accidents
Please, DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE!
The holidays are fast approaching! This means family dinners, parties with friends and unfortunately, drinking & driving. I don't mean to put a damper on the holiday spirits, but try to imagine what will happen if you or a loved one is involved in a DUI related accident, or worse yet, a fatality.
I've been involved in EMS (Emergency Medical Services) for over twenty years and have been on too many DUI related accidents. It's true that many an intoxicated subject walks away from a crash while emergency services use the Jaws of Life to extricate a family out of a mini-van. Unfortunately, I've been there while the subject argues and fights with crews while denying having had anything to drink -- as the cans of beer fall out of the car. I've also been on calls where just about everyone dies. That doesn't make for a happy holiday season, believe me.
According to the US Dept. of Transportation, an estimated 12,998 people were killed in US crashes in 2007 where a vehicle operator had a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher! This is how it breaks down by driver's age:
10% Ages 16-20 18% Ages 21-24 26% Ages 25-34 20% 35-44 21% 45-64 3% 65+ 2% unknown
In Bucks County alone, here are some sobering statistics:

Just think, someone in the US dies in an alcohol-related motor vehicle crash every 31 minutes and someone is injured every two minutes. Source: NHTSA
Remember too, if you're hosting a party, keep the keys!
For those that believe this does not belong in our Flights of the Peregrine, I respectfully invite you to run a night of duty with me or volunteer to help at a local DUI checkpoint. The one I attended saw the first arrest within 10 minutes, with too many more to follow the rest of the night!
So, before you party, give the keys to the host. Call a family member, a friend or even a taxi to drive you home. Designate someone not to drink. And remember something else, the other drivers on the road may not care enough about how much they've had, so you need to be watchful of them!
We hope you stay safe during this holiday season and throughout the coming year.
