How automated - or NOT - can you be using Layout-8000 V12?
|
|
There's a lot of power and smarts "under the hood" of Layout-8000. There always has been, but since Version 11, it's more apparent and more user-friendly. Different sites use varying degrees of this power. The full gamut of these usage workflows runs from using NONE of the power of Layout-8000 to taking full advantage of it. Here are some workflow examples our installers have actually seen.
- print out ad orders, cut them apart one per page, sort them by hand, dummy the paper manually including drawings, enter the data into Layout-8000 and position each ad manually to duplicate the design (Yes, we really have a site like this.)
- download ad orders from order entry system into Layout-8000, use Layout's reports to size the paper, manually place each ad
- download ad orders from site's order entry, use Layout-8000's order entry to add more detailed position requests (e.g. Groups and Types), let Layout-8000 position most ads automatically and clean it up a bit at the end if necessary
- download ad orders from site's order entry, use MetaAdBoss™ to add customers' usual position requests (e.g. Groups and Types), let Layout-8000 position most ads automatically
- use AdMAX™ or another order entry system that passes the correct position requests and let Layout-8000 "auto-dummy" the entire edition
It truly pains us to see options 1 or 2 in action. We get happier as you move towards the higher numbered options. If you don't believe you can approach options 4 or 5, call or email Phil Curtolo to talk about a demo. |

| Don't Redesign, Rethink: Some tough love from Bill Ostendorf |
|
His article "Don't Redesign, Rethink" in the January 14, 2011, issue of E&P's NewsBites contains some thoughtful warnings and advice starting with:
"A continued, gradual drop in print readership could be explained as a natural result of technological changes. But the dramatic drops experienced by newspapers in recent years have been greatly accelerated by our own, self-inflicted wounds." and continues "A true rethinking of print - one that goes well beyond the fonts and formats of a redesign or the musical chairs of most newsroom reorganizations - can revitalize both our print publications and our newsrooms."
The rest of the article contains very specific and practical ways to start this rethinking, and I recommend you read and share it.
