Whittle Your Waistline!
|
My girlfriend Tanya is one of my fellow die-hard workout buddies. Whether it's a hike in the mountains, a pilates class, or a strength training workout, she's up for anything and everything - and that's probably why we get along so well. Needless to say, with her vast range of routines that she tries, Tanya has a fit, beautiful figure. But she recently came to me for advice on an area of her body that was troubling her. "I thought I was doing everything right," she said, "I work all the areas of my abs, follow a clean diet, and do plenty of cardio and strength training. But I still feel like my midsection is widening and I can't seem to get my curves back.
Tanya's run into something that many women struggle with, regardless of their fitness levels - their waistline has thickened. It's that dreaded middle-age spread: In spite of your best efforts, you find that your waistline has lost those curves. sometimes even the fittest women find themselves looking the mirror and asking, "Where is my waistline?!" It's almost like the old game "Where's Waldo" - except nobody's laughing. Let's talk about 3 ways to solve that riddle fast.

RESHAPE YOUR WAISTLINE
|
First, it's important to understand the power of the obliques...these are muscles on the side of the abdominals that can be strengthened with exercises like "bicycle crunches" and "side crunches." Working the obliques is key when it comes to strengthening your core, which not only helps give you a slim waistline and lean flat belly, but can make you stronger for everyday functional activities.
Think of it this way: Your abdominals, especially the obliques, are a group of muscles, just like your biceps, pectorals, and calves. And like those muscles, they can be strengthened, shaped, defined. I created my Tummy Trimmer DVD to do just that...trim your tummy. Not so much to give you a rock hard six-pack, but to banish the bulge and help you sculpt a lean and sculpted waistline. The key is mixing up your workouts and include lots of repetition to tone and trim with bulking up. I've combined five different 10-minute workouts specifically designed to retrain your obliques and whittle your waistline.
1. Standing Abs - Burn mega calories with these fun dance-style moves, that's right...you don't always need to get on the floor to banish bellyfat! 2. Core Abs - Sculpt your waist and increase your functional core strength by engaging the deepest abdominal muscles....hmmm, long time no "feel"! 3. Boot Camp Abs - Not your Mama's crunches, this state of the art approach will get you results with just 10 minutes a day. 4. Stability Ball Abs - Improve you balance and agility while you sculpt, perfect to keep you "on the ball" in life. 5. Pilates Mat Abs - Designed to perfect your posture and trim inches while you lengthen and strengthen your torso.
Give this a try - here's a Tummy Trimmer move I call the "Throw & Break" : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l45PGvLxU0g&feature=channel_page With this move, your arms provide both the resistance and stability needed to create a "throwing" action that activates the obliques, while "breaking" at the correct point of extension prevents tweaking your back muscles.

PUT A TWIST ON CARDIO
|
There's another key ingredient to whittling your waistline that has nothing to do with working your abs (okay, almost nothing): Cardio. Perhaps you've heard me say it before: No matter how many crunches you do and how strong your core is, if you don't burn off that top layer of fat, you'll never get to see the results of all your hard work. That's why a lack of cardio can also contribute to that "boxy" effect we're all trying to avoid. For a well-rounded cardio routine that can be done as two 20-minute workouts, or a complete 40-minute fatburning extravaganza, check out my Cardio Fat Burner DVD.
The best waistline I ever had was when I was creating and shooting my boxing & kickboxing workouts with Keith Cooke and Michael Olajide. Not only did we finish every session drenched in sweat, but I found that with every punch and every kick, I was toning my midsection because of the constant twisting action that's so key to this style of exercise. So if you'd like to crank up your cardio with a workout that really tightens your center, try my Cardio Knockout DVD.

LOOK TEN POUNDS THINNER INSTANTLY!
|
Sound too good to be true? Well . . . it isn't. Don't underestimate the power of good posture. Not only is it key for a healthy back and core, but it has an instant slimming effect, especially on your midsection!
Try this now: Imagine that you're a puppet, someone's got a string attached to the top of your head. Now let that string pull you up about a quarter of an inch, starting with the crown of your head and traveling all the way down your spine. Take some good, deep breaths, and notice what's happening to your body. Not only will you begin to feel more energized and alert, but suddenly, you've got a waistline!

The Bottom Line:
|
When I think about the oblique muscle group, I imagine taffy, watching it made through the window of the local candy store. It is pulled and stretched this way and that, over & over and over again until it is long, sleek and lean. Your abs muscle are really quite similar, using the similar method of repetition, you can get a sleek and toned waistline too. Just like that, 1, 2, 3 ... proper abdominal training, combined with a cardio routine and a healthy diet. Before you know it, you'll whittle your waistline back down to that lovely curvy shape of days gone by.
