| The Business Community Must be Heard this Election! | |
By Kathy Tilque, President/CEO
Early voting began April 21st and your vote is extremely important. Your Chamber has done extensive research on all the candidates for Town Council. While there are some very nice candidates who have placed their hat in the ring we feel that you, as business owners, should strongly consider whether you would place the management of your business in the hands of someone with no prior experience in your industry. If you question that wisdom then we urge you to take a look around at what a wonderful community Gilbert is today. It didn't happen overnight, it took courage and vision to stay true to making Gilbert a desirable community; not only for residents and families but for business as well. We have maintained a strong, open-door type communication with our current councilmembers and have found they are always eager to meet with businesses one-on-one or in group settings to find out how they can help grow and support your business.
Times are tough, there is no doubt, and our future is in the hands of those YOU elect. Please take a moment to hear directly from the candidates the Chamber endorses by clicking here. Please share this information with your network of clients and friends.

Gilbert Chamber Supports General Plan Ballot | |
By Kathy Tilque, President/CEO
The Gilbert Chamber of Commerce has been actively involved in the public process of updating the Town of Gilbert's General Plan which will go before the voters in May 2011. This revised General Plan will set the stage for Gilbert's growth and priorities during the next ten years and requires a vote of support from our community.
The update process was spread out over more than a year's time and included monthly public meetings of subcommittees, open house meetings throughout the community and feedback from citizens, businesses, and other entities such as schools, county, and water resource partners.
Of particular interest to the Chamber is the updated economic development and environmental chapters that outline long-term strategies for our community. However, the Plan's long-term strategies stretch beyond just economic development and include many of the quality of life issues that are important to our citizens and businesses. We urge you to take time to review the General Plan online at www.gilbertaz.gov/planning/GenPlan2011.cfm.
Support of the 2011 General Plan will ensure our community continues to grow, prosper and maintain fiscal stability as we approach build-out. A vote of support is a vote for the future of Gilbert. |

| Legislature Passes 2012 Budget | |
By Eric Emmert, Dorn Policy Group
The Arizona Legislature passed and Governor Brewer signed the Fiscal Year 2012 Budget last month after weeks of negotiations between House and Senate leaders. With the temporary one-cent sales tax ending in two years and federal stimulus funds ending, legislative leaders worked to trim state government spending amid challenging economic times. Some of the notable budget issues include: - Consolidate several state government administrative functions and offices
- Require co-pays for Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS) assistance
- Increase AHCCCS eligibility requirements
- Increase employee contributions to the Arizona State Retirement System
- Reduce soft capital funding for K-12 education
- Defer partial funding to Arizona universities
Govenor Signs Unemployment Insurance - HB 2619 The Arizona Senate amended a House Bill to include a fix to the state Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund. The Fund borrowed from the Federal Government to make required payments and is currently operating with a negative balance. If HB 2619 is not signed into law, the Federal Government will take over Arizona's unemployment insurance program costing employers significantly more money than costs associated with the proposed fix. Should you have questions about these or any other issues impacting business, please feel free to contact the East Valley Chambers of Commerce Alliance contract lobbyists (Tom Dorn, Eric Emmert and Heather Bernacki) at (602) 606-4667. |
