Council Supports Annual Registration to Reduce Costs
By Kathy Tilque, president and CEO

The Gilbert Chamber has been involved with the Town to change the current business registration process to an annual licensing. Business registration information collected in the past was used to determine if hazardous waste was deposited into the the Town's wastewater. In an effort to allow businesses to complete all the paper work and remit payments at one time, the Town is considering a process which would include fire inspection and police alarm information on one form. Currently, this information is collected at different times throughout the year.

While the Council won't vote on the new changes to require an annual business license until the beginning of 2011, they did vote to approve changing the three-year registration to an annual registration effective in December 2010. The fee for an initial registration will be $35 and a renewal will be $15. These are anticipated to be the same fees for a business license. (There are specific types of businesses whose fees are larger such as day cares, restaurants, etc. due to other licensing requirements but for a general business these costs will remain the same.)

The Chamber agreed that making the change now to an annual registration would allow businesses to move into the licensing queue within a year instead of three-years of paying fees at different times of the year. The Chamber also worked closely with the Town to identify ways to efficiently change these processes and notifying businesses electronically at renewal times which resulted in savings up to $200 a year in some cases.

Home-based businesses are required to register their business under the current ordinance and will need to continue that practice once their registration has expired.

The Town of Gilbert is working on obtaining the software needed to allow for on-line licensing to include credit card payment. The Chamber has stressed the importance of upgrading technology to make it easier for businesses to conduct transactions with the Town electronically. We are pleased to see the progress made in this area as it will save businesses money and time.

How They Voted

A Yes vote indicated they supported the change to annual registration on November 11, 2010; the business license issue will be evaluated in the first quarter of 2011. The Chamber supported this action.

SCF LogoThousand of people are blinded each year from work-related eye injuries that could have been prevented with the proper selection and use of eye and face protection. OSHA requires employees in the work environment, which means eye and face protection must be provided whenever neccessary to protect against chemical, environmental, radiological or mechanical irritants and hazards.

Council Approves Increase in Size of A-frame Signs

By Kathy Tilque, president and CEO

After the previous temporary sign code ordinance was passed, it was found that the size requirements for A-frames were considered custom ordered. The Chamber and Town worked together to increase the size A-frames to 31 inches wide and 45 inches high and allowed stakes to hold flying banners in the ground.

Chamber Members Define Generous Character During Tough Times

By Kathy Tilque, president and CEO

As we move toward the holiday season, we have great opportunity to reflect on all we have to be thankful for and to celebrate the good fortunes that have been bestowed upon us.

As I look back through the clouds of uncertainty and hard times so many have endured this past year. I clearly see the rays of hope and prosperity peering through. I see the many chamber members who have stepped forward to help others in the community. I see the generosity of their giving as we collect donations for the elderly in our community and raise funds for the youth who need financial assistance to attend programs at the Boys and Girls Club. You'll find these volunteers donating their time to the schools and non-profit organizations while also attending community fundraising events. Their presence at every event I've attended throughout the year is truly the spirit of our community.

I know how tough these times are for many businesses, yet they give their time and their limited resources. This past year, the Chamber unveiled new programming centered on the opportunities to engage our members in the community and the Chamber, to connect our members with others and to advance their business. As we move toward the end of our second quarter, I must say it has been a success as our attendance and participation has increased not only at Chamber events by throughout the community as well.

I'm proud to be associated with such a dynamic group of professionals. It is often said that true character is defined during the hard times not the easy times. Our Chamber members have certainly defined their outstanding and generous character this past year.

May your holiday season be joyous and bring peace and prosperity to you all!

Go Green! Tip of the Month

Running your tap continuously while preparing food or washing dishes can use more than two gallons of water every minute your tap is running. If every American household reduced their water use by 10 gallons on just Christmas Day, it would save more than 1 billion gallons of water, as well as save any energy or materials used to pump or treat tap water.
