Sen. McCain Pays Visit to Gilbert Chamber
By Sarah Watts, Executive Assistant

What an honor it was to welcome Arizona Sen. John McCain to Gilbert at a dinner hosted by the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by Mercy Gilbert Medical Center on September 18th at Trilogy at Power Ranch.

McCain at TrilogySenator McCain spoke to the more than 230 attendees about issues concerning the healthcare debate saying, "The fundamental problem with healthcare in America is not quality of care. The problem with healthcare in America is inflation."

According to McCain, reforms are needed to lower the cost of malpractice insurance and an emphasis should be placed on fitness and wellness.

McCain praised Mercy Gilbert Medical Center for the stem cell research being conducted.

"What is being done at Mercy Gilbert is hard to believe when you look at the results of adult stem cells being injected into the heart," he said.

Also discussed was the economy's effect on small businesses. McCain cited instances in which he was told of small businesses losing their lines of credit despite on-time payments. He said he opposes tax hikes and supports loans for small businesses.

"I believe the economy is slowly recovering but what bothers me and worries me is that it hasn't hit Main Street yet," McCain said.

Gilbert Mayor John Lewis recognized the event as a celebration of Constitution Week. McCain thanked attendees for honoring the Constitution, calling it "the most vital living document in the history of the world."

Turn Them Off When Not In Use

Turning off one computer and monitor nightly and on weekends could save up to $80 each year. It's a good idea to set computers, monitors, and copiers to sleep mode when not in use. Unless a computer is doing a critical function at night, such as a regular backup, there is not a reason for it to be on.
Get a Grip on Safe Lifting Techniques

Skilled lifters know how much of a load they can handle; never lift beyond their strength; and get help if they need it.

SCF and GCOC Partnership

No matter what you lift, it will be a lot  easier if you use these lifting skills...

· Get a good grip on the load, keeping it close to your body while lifting.
· Lift with your legs, not with your back.
· Lift gradually, avoiding quick, jerky motions.
· Turn feet, not hips or shoulders, if turning is required.

EVCCA Marks High Scores During Legislative Session
By Kathy Langdon, President/CEO

While the official legislative session has adjourned at the State Capitol, legislators will be called back into special session this fall.  The budget deficit dominated the discussions this year,  however, the East Valley Chambers of Commerce Alliance's (EVCCA) tireless efforts resulted in successfully influencing three out of four bills outlined in this year's report card.

Included in this year's budget bills were many conflicting policy issues that impact East Valley businesses. Support for one policy and opposition to another issue in the same budget bill makes grading difficult.  While the EVCCA communicated its positions on policy issues to lawmakers, because of the aforementioned conflict, it chose not to grade legislators on the budget bills.

Here is a quick look at how our District 22 legislators faired on the percentage of votes they agreed with the EVCCA position:

Senator Thayer Verschoor - 93%
Representative Andy Biggs - 73%
Representative Laurin Hendrix - 93%

For a complete look at the report card which identifies the bills and status along with how the rest of the East Valley legislators scored; please visit www.gilbertaz.com and click on the EVCCA logo.

The EVCCA coordinates and advances the common business interests of the East Valley.  The Gilbert Chamber is a founding member of the EVCCA which joins efforts of the Ahwatukee Foothills, Apache Junction, Chandler, Mesa, Queen Creek, Scottsdale, and Tempe chambers of commerce.  The EVCCA represents more than 7,300 businesses in the East Valley.
Chamber, Sentz Evaluate Temporary Sign Codes

The Gilbert Chamber's public policy committee has been hard at work identifying several types of temporary signs the Town could consider relaxing restrictions and sign permitting requirements to help businesses promote and increase visibility.

Councilman John Sentz, a Chamber Board liaison, agreed to carry this request forward to begin the public process, which will include stakeholder meetings to receive input from throughout the community.

"One of the top concerns we hear from our members is the ability to use signage to promote their business," said Kathy Langdon, President/CEO.  "We feel the time is right for the Council to consider relaxing some of those restrictions to help our business community prosper."

A member survey will be coming to you soon; please take a moment to fill it out and provide feedback.

"Hearing directly from our members is extremely important," Langdon said.  "They are in the trenches every day and know what works and what doesn't.  The great thing about participating in the survey is that members don't have to leave their business to participate, yet their feedback is just as valuable as if they sat in the various meetings."

Members who would like to become more involved in this process should contact Kathy Langdon at 480-892-1103 or kathy@gilbertchamber.com.
Leadership's Class Starts Off Swinging

Tim ColquhounGilbert Leadership Class XVIII kicked off their first issue day-Social and Orientation-at the Gilbert Historical Museum Thursday, September 17th. Sky-Y CampOn September 18th, the class met at San-Tan's Chick-Fil-A for breakfast, then headed to Sky-Y Camp in Prescott.  The class was put through many challenges to build team building skills and learn more about one another. To end the day, the class climbed high ropes, low ropes and some even jumped off on a giant swing.  It was a great success!!
