| Chamber Decides Candidate Endorsements |
The Gilbert Chamber of Commerce has endorsed two mayoral and two town council candidates in an effort to educate its members about those candidates who best understand business issues. Mayoral candidates John Lewis and Don Skousen have been endorsed by the Chamber for election. The Chamber has also endorsed incumbent Joan Krueger and John Sentz for election to town council.

"This election provides us the opportunity to choose from a number of qualified candidates," said Kathy Langdon, President/CEO of the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce. "The Chamber is endorsing candidates that best understand how potential legislation can help or hinder a company's operation and growth and who will be a friend of business while in office." According to Langdon, the candidates' knowledge of the issues facing the Town during these economic times was also weighted heavily during the endorsement process. When considering a candidate for endorsement, the Chamber follows a strict policy to ensure each candidate is given fair opportunity through a questionnaire and candidate forum, as well as a member survey. Early voting begins February 9th and polling takes place on March 10th. For additional information, including all candidate responses to the questionnaire, visit www.gilbertaz.com. |
| GPS, Chamber Collaborate on Scholars Program |
Gilbert Public Schools has formed a partnership with the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce to encourage local businesses to participate in the Arizona Academic Scholars program in an effort to prepare students for post-secondary education. Arizona Academic Scholars is a community-wide incentive strategy to encourage students to take challenging courses throughout high school, better preparing them for post-secondary education and the increasingly competitive job market. "This program provides a unique opportunity for business volunteers to develop relationships with students and educators," said Barbara VeNard, Assistant Superintendent for Gilbert Public Schools. The Gilbert Chamber of Commerce will be asking its members to become involved on many different levels, including mentoring students in the classroom as well as raising awareness of and/or sponsoring the program. "This program gives local employers the opportunity to shape their future workforce," said Kathy Langdon, President/CEO of the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce. "It is our hope that employers in our community won't have to look any further than our own backyard when searching for quality employees." For more information regarding the Arizona Academic Scholars program, visit www.azacademicscholars.org. To volunteer your time or for additional information regarding the collaboration with Gilbert Public Schools and the Gilbert Chamber, contact Grace Hodges at (480) 926-6027 or email grace@gilbertchamber.com. |

| 'Cutting Back' May Cost Your Business |
Everyone is doing it-cutting back, that is. During flourishing economic times, businesses often make membership investments and pay dues to as many "pro-business" organizations as they can. With recent changes to our national and local economies, many feel the need to cut expenses where possible. It is during these times that a unified business community is needed. When considering your memberships, ask yourself what each membership really does for your business. Your membership should be more than a ticket to networking events. Your membership should include marketing opportunities for your business and a professional staff working on your behalf. Your membership should be working toward strengthening your community's business climate with a proven advocacy record of results. For as little as $27 a month-less than the cost of a box of copy paper-members of the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce receive all of these benefits and many more, including customer referrals, business counseling and healthcare discounts. Since 1979, the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce has worked to bring together local businesses to learn from and advocate for one another on a local, state, and national level. What does your membership do for you? It's your chamber...Your Choice!

| Keeping Your Cool During Tough Times |
|
Is the financial crisis creating too much stress and anxiety in your life? Oregon Partnership Crisis Lines Director, Leslie Storm, has some good advice: · Talk it out. Don't keep it to yourself. Normally, you might not talk about your financial situation. But a whole lot of folks are in the same boat. Talking with family and friends is a good thing, and no need to go into details. · Get outside. Take walks. Get some exercise. It does wonders in good times and bad. · OK, you won't be eating at restaurants or going out as much. So take advantage of staying home and spending more time with the family!More at-home family time - and having dinners at home - is another good thing. · If you have kids, be upfront with them. Explain to them what the economy is all about - that sometimes people have to spend less and go without luxuries...but in time, the economy always bounces back. · Turn off the TV news and listen to music! You are probably aware of these simple concepts, but being reminded to find comfort in the small things can make the load seem lighter-especially when you're not carrying the load alone. |
