One Life Chiropractic Newsletter Kids Edition
Greetings!
In honor of our Healthy Kids Day on August 22nd, One Life is excited to present a special kids edition of our newsletter. This newsletter features articles and information specifically geared towards your young one's health. A major part of One Life's mission is to spread the message of healthy living and prevention of disease or imbalance. The sooner in a child's life that we can plant the seed of wellness, the more likely that they will adopt these ideas into their everyday as adults. Learning starts with a curiosity. Everyday, we talk with parents who wish that they knew about Chiropractic care at an earlier age. We teach the parents what is at the route of their children's colic, asthma, chronic colds and flu, constipation, allergies, hyperactivity, sleep disorders, etc. We then work with families to adopt these ideas into their daily lives. Treating children in the practice has been one of the most wonderful and rewarding aspects of patient care. Children genuinely look forward to getting adjusted and find healthy living FUN! Children also tend to respond to care allot quicker than adults as they don't have the years of accumulated stress on their systems.
We are living in a world where misinformation is prevalent and funded by special interest groups. We are also raising our children under a medical model that is highly reliant on medications. It is increasingly important to think outside the box and question the treatments that we have accepted as mainstream many of which come with added risks and side-effects. Most often, a natural alternative to a recommended medication or procedure can be just as effective, without the unwanted side-effects or risks.
We hope you will discover and learn something new and exciting about the wonderful world of children's healthcare!
In good health naturally,
Dr. Kristy Allen

An increasing epidemic in American Society, childhood obesity is rapidly on the rise. Approximately 17% (or 12.5 million) of children and adolescents aged 2-19 years are obese.
What are the consequences of childhood obesity?
- Childhood obesity can have a harmful effect on the body in a variety of ways. Obese children are more likely to have-
- High blood pressure and high cholesterol, which are risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD). In one study, 70% of obese children had at least one CVD risk factor, and 39% had two or more.
- Increased risk of impaired glucose tolerance, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.
- Breathing problems, such as sleep apnea, and asthma.
- Joint problems and musculoskeletal discomfort.
- Fatty liver disease, gallstones, and gastro-esophageal reflux (i.e., heartburn).
- Obese children and adolescents have a greater risk of social and psychological problems, such as discrimination and poor self-esteem, which can continue into adulthood.
Health risks later
- Obese children are more likely to become obese adults. Adult obesity is associated with a number of serious health conditions including heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers.
- If children are overweight, obesity in adulthood is likely to be more severe.
Although childhood obesity is on the rise, there are many practical ways to prevent it. The first way is to get active. Limit media time to an hour or two a day and encourage kids to get outside and get active. Secondly, stay away from starches and sugary foods. Revert back to the healthy basics of lots of fruits and vegetables, as well as whole grains. Avoid processed foods that are filled with chemicals and preservatives. Avoid fast food restaurants. Switch from drinking beverages with a lot of sugar, like juice and soda, to only drinking water. It is very important for kids to stay hydrated.

Kids Need Chiropractic Too
Chiropractic care is a non-invasive and drug-free form of treatment, helping to resolve and prevent a wide range of health problems experienced not only by adults, but by children as well. Recent research by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association found spinal manipulation therapy safe and successful in treating children of all ages. Even parents have reported successful treatment of health issues such as acute ear ache, upper respiratory infection, muscle pain, neck pain, accident trauma, allergies, and more. Spinal manipulation is safe even for children as young as infants. It is considered to be an alternative treatment for the discomfort of colic and other digestive disorders. Chiropractic care not only improves overall physical wellness, it can also help with psychological issues. Parents surveyed by the ICPA reported behavioral improvement for kids who saw a chiropractor, as well as improved sleep and stronger immune systems. So don't forget, your kids need chiropractic care too! The preventative is just as important as the symptomatic treatments. Protect your kids from physical issues later in life and help them live healthier, happier lives with chiropractic care.

Chiropractic Care and Pregnancy
Chiropractic care is essential for the pregnant mother.
The mother's spine and pelvis undergoes many changes and adaptations to compensate for the growing baby. This then increases the risk of interference to her nervous system. Chiropractic care helps to establish balance in the mother's pelvis and overall alignment. If the bones of the pelvis are are out of alignment or subluxated, this will directly affect the way the uterus will be supported, reducing the maximum amount of room for the developing baby. This can also create difficulty during labor and can contribute to a breech presentation.
Additionally, compensations to the spine and pelvis during pregnancy are likely to cause an imbalance to pelvic muscles and ligaments. The uterus is supported by ligaments that also aid in supporting the pelvic bones. When the pelvic bone are balanced correctly, the uterus can properly enlarge with the growing baby. If the bones are not balanced properly, the function of the uterus will be impaired. Unequal ligament support of the uterus will torque the uterus reducing the maximum amount of room for the developing baby. This type of constraint can also affect the baby's position during pregnancy, limiting the babies ability to get into the best possible position for birth. If this happens, it can lead to longer and more painful labors. For all these reason, chiropractic care is an essential element to a healthy pregnancy.

Addictive Foods and You
Imagine sitting down to a meal and instead of seeing delicious food on your plate, your eyes are greeted with a plate heaping with multiple drugs. Who in their right mind would knowingly consume addictive drugs? What you may not be aware of is that the foods you serve your children can have the same addictive effect as drugs, particularly opiates and narcotics.
Food can be as addictive as alcohol and drugs, especially with overeating! Opiates are effective but temporary remedies for dysfunctional body-mind states. The drive to maintain an opiate level is less to "get high" and more to feel "normal" and mostly to avoid the terrible experience of withdrawal. So although you may 'feel well' when you eat junk foods, the affects on a psychological level will effect you heavily once you try to stop. This is the scientific explanation of "emotional eating."
There are other factors that aid this addiction, such as a large number of regulatory peptides feeding back to brain control centers to form the brain-gut axis. A stop signal to the brain when enough food is eaten would be important for appetite control and may be defective in compulsive eaters. In other words, the endorphins and feelings of contentment that are created when we eat, cause some people to not know when to stop, shutting off that brain function. Some foods are more likely to create this affect then others. The top ten addictive foods are listed as: 1. Ice-Cream 2. Chocolate 3. Cheese 4. Caffeine 5. Fast Food 6. Potato Chips 7. Cakes and Pastries Foods high in fats, sugars, caffeine, and addictive chemicals are what trigger the narcotic reaction that overcomes willpower. Major food companies dedicate a large amount of money towards research geared at making their products addictive. For example, an Oreo cookie has more than 20 known addictive chemicals in it! Stopping consumption of addictive foods can cause withdrawal symptoms, creating a roller-coaster of cravings and emotions. Cleaning up your family's eating habits may not be easy, but the health benefits last a lifetime. If you are struggling to detoxify your pantry and your body, we can help! The team at One Life is equipped to answer your questions, provide support, hold you accountable and make it fun for the whole family! You are what you eat! |
Allergies, ADD, Asthma, Oh my! Allergies, ADD/ADHD, and asthma are three of the most common ailments found in children. Although these disorder can be frustrating and difficult to treat, a solution can be found through wholistic chiropractic care. The origin for each of these complaints are often very interrelated!
Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD/ADHD) is the most commonly reported childhood behavioral disorder, affecting between 3 and 7% of American children. It is characterized by poor attention span, impulsive behaviors, and hyperactivity in some children. The diagnostic criteria are strictly observational, and there are no objective laboratory tests to confirm that diagnosis. Subjective evaluations of annoying, distracting, or inattentive behavior makes the "diagnosis" of ADD/ADHD speculative at best and often difficult to distinguish from bad behavior.
There are limited main-stream treatment options for this disorder. The main accepted treatment is the prescription of Methylphenidae, or Ritalin, which is a controlled and addictive drug. There are no long term effects of this drug known so far, but the side affects, including addiction, are coming to the surface. Children often complain of poor appetite, upset stomach, difficulty sleeping, irregular energy levels and not feeling themselves. In some cases, personality changes can be severe.
How does Ritalin work? Ritalin works at the same receptors in the brain as cocaine. It works by overstimulating the nervous system in an attempt to exhaust brain cell activity. When brain activity is exhausted, children appear in a calmer, less distracted state.
How do Chiropractic adjustments work? Chiropractic adjustments work to desensitize the nervous system to cause less overall stimulation. Adjustments of the spine also improve blood flow to the brain to allow overall activity. This can aid in the treatment of learning disorders, hyperactivity, dyslexia, inability to concentrate and behavior problems.
The exact cause of ADD/ADHD is not known, but major contributors are adverse responses to food additives, vaccinations, intolerances to foods, sensitivities to environmental chemicals, molds, and fungi, exposures to neurodevelopmental toxins such as heavy metals and organohalide pollutants, or physical trauma often dating back to birth. Also, nutrient deficiencies are often common in children with ADD/ADHD. Nutritional supplements have shown promising results in children with ADD/ADHD. A wholistic/integrative management program will include supplementation, chiropractic adjustment, dietary modification, detoxification, and removal of environmental toxins.
Nearly 40 million Americans-that's 25% of the total population-suffer from asthma and other allergies. In an asthma attack, children will experience severe congestion, swelling, and other allergic type reactions in response to various irritants. As the reaction progresses, breathing becomes more difficult and in some cases life-threatening. The New England Journal of Medicine in February of 1992 published a study that shows that many side effects and even the worsening of a condition can come from regular use of inhaled medications.
"The primary muscle for breathing is the diaphragm. It is actually composed of two muscles, the left and right hemidiaphragms, which separate the chest and abdominal cavities. The phrenic nerve (C3, C4, C5 - neck nerves) powers the diaphragm. If the nerve supply is interfered with, such as in a subluxation in the neck, the diaphragm weakens and breathing becomes impaired. Additional muscles, such as the sternocleidomastoid, trapezius, scalene, and pectorals operate to assist the diaphragm during a period of increased breathing effort, such as during exercise or severe respiratory illness. All of these muscles must have nerve supply to work. Subluxations interfering with normal nerve supply can cause muscular imbalances leading to a weaker respiratory tract. Restoring nerve supply by correcting vertebral subluxations not only improves muscle tone, but actually aids in overall body function, especially in the immune response."
