Greetings!
Summer is finally here! With it, One Life brings some exciting changes. In May, we celebrated a Grand Reopening. This brought alot of excitement and attention to our wellness practice! No, we didn't close and reopen. Our open house event was to celebrate the 4th anniversary of One Life in the Pittsford location as well as the expansion of our Nutrition and Weight Loss Center. We welcomed Andréa and Michael Evans, the duo of Team Evans Health and Fitness. Andréa is a clinical nutrition counselor and Michael is a certified personal trainer. Their background and expertise are a much welcomed and long awaited addition to One Life.
A consistent philosophy of One Life has been the connection between structure, nutrition, environment, emotions, allergies/sensitivites and toxins. With the addition of Team Evans, One Life patients will learn how to continue their healing experience outside of office visits. While we believe strongly in the unique ability of the body to heal itself, in-office treatments are only half as effective as the lifestyle changes that go with it. One Life patients will now learn important skills for building a healthy and satisfying meal plan, how to shop and read labels and how to make sense of all the conflicting information that is out there. Michael offers the unique service of as needed appointments. Hire him to assess your ability level and customize an individualized at-home program. He has a variety of Beachbody programs to meet your goals. I have worked with him personally and I can say that he will help you reach your full potential and beyond while also taking care to avoid injury and keep you mentally engaged.
As part of our ongoing goal to revolutionize health care we are so excited to bring quality services, products and practitioners. Just as our health is dynamic and ever-changing, so is our practice. We will never get stale or accept mediocrity. Instead, we will be forever forward moving, following the times and the changing needs that our environment places on health.

New and Improved Dr. Kristy and Andréa completed the 100 hour certification in Applied Kinesiology or "AK." This specialization brings a higher specificity to diagnosis and treatment and in my opinion is the most comprehensive system in integrative health care. Robyn VanZielen of Dynamic Thermal Imaging will now be performing Thermography screenings the first Wednesday of every month. Her work is truly saving lives with the earliest detection of some of the most deadly silent killers out there. Thermography can detect cancerous growth 8 to 10 years earlier than traditional imaging. I personally recommend her testing to everyone that I love!
Nancy Pigno, LMT demonstrated somatics sessions at our Grand Reopening. Somatics can be used in conjunction with regularly schedule massage appointments or exclusively to accomplish relaxation, range of motion and body awareness. Somatics sessions do not require clothing to be removed. They are perfect for abbreviated lunch hour appointments or for adolescents or elderly clients.

Wheat Belly Book Review  A note from Dr. Kristy: This book was first brought to my attention by a patient who is also under the care of one of our local integrative medical doctors. Patients who's conditions were unresolved by a combination approach of medicine and lifestyle changes would almost immediately improve once wheat was taken out of the diet. This was true wether or not the patient tested positive for Celiac disease or gluten sensitivity. In the world of nutrition, there has always been a wealth of conflicting information. Wheat Belly presents the science and the epidemiology behind why, as a whole, we are better off without the wheat. I immediately shared this book with Andréa because she will be the one to help my patients through making this change if we decide that it is right for them. Believe me, as an Italian, I am just as crushed as you all reading this. I was raised on bread and pasta! I have slowly been eliminating wheat from my diet little by little, but as I tried to be more diligent, it became apparent that wheat is in everything! This is the very reason that wheat consumption has become so problematic. It is by far the largest dietary staple in America today. The wheat that we eat today is not the same wheat that our ancestors once used. There is a lower protein content and a higher gluten concentration. Much of the wheat used today has been Genetically Modified to yield higher crop production that is resistant to high wind conditions. Before you try to go wheat free on your own, please read what Andréa has to say. You don't have to do this on your own and you don't have to suffer to feel satisfied after a meal. With a couple of creative alternatives, you will be on your way to a healthier new you and you won't want to look back! A note from Andréa: As a clinical nutritionist I make it my business to read and research non-stop about current nutrition topics. With that said I must say that it has been a very long time since I have read a book so interesting, shocking and absorbing as Wheat Belly. Dr. Davis helps put into simple terms what I explain to patients all the time, "we have unwittingly traded convenience, abundance, and low cost for health with wheat bellies, bulging thighs, and double chins to prove it" (xi). Wheat, in its modern day form - genetically modified to be "dwarf" wheat" which produces higher yield for farmers versus the wheat of ancestors, having never been tested along the way through thousands of genetic modifications for safety of human consumption is basically, "aside from some extra fiber, eating two slices of whole wheat bread is really little different, often worse, than drinking a can of sugar-sweetened soda or eating a sugary candy bar" (33). I have been recommending to patients for a very long time to eliminate certain foods including wheat for weight loss and this book just solidified my initial feelings about the grain. Not only does it provide an in-depth conversation and explanation for why wheat should be avoided but it has also helped to make the idea of eliminating gluten easy to understand as well as a starting point on how to accomplish this goal.
People who have a gluten sensitivity end up seeking out help to lose weight...why?! Because these same people have switched their previously high gluten (and wheat) containing diet to the now popular gluten free food fad. Many think that if a food is labeled gluten-free (much like "organic") then it is a health food and good for you. Dr. Davis helps to explain that there are few foods that raise the blood's insulin level higher than wheat does with the exception of powdered rice starch, cornstarch, potato starch and tapioca starch (the main ingredients in GF foods!), "in short, don't replace wheat calories with rapidly absorbed carbohydrates or the sort that trigger insulin and visceral fat deposition" (72-74).
The last shocking detail in this book that should be noted, (and I must add that I believe this to be absolutely true as Dr. Kristy and I have taken many seminars and have seen with our own eyes the effects of this) is that wheat has been irrefutably connected to the dramatic increase in obesity levels and the resulting dramatic increase in metabolic disorder in the U.S. Why is this? It is sadly quite simple - wheat consumption causes in increase in insulin in the blood, increase in insulin that cannot be utilized becomes stored. How is it stored? As belly and visceral fat. Why is that important? Because belly fat is a "special fat. It is not just a passive repository for excess pizza calories; it is, in effect, an endocrine gland much like your thyroid gland or pancreas", insulin resistance occurs, estrogen sky rockets and we end up with "beer bellies", "man-boobs" and a slew of diseases like diabetes, hypertension, and arthritis with increased inflammation.
Bottom line - this is an excellent read and a great start. A word of caution - if you are new to this do not try to do this on your own, make an appointment and I would be happy to walk you through the steps to changing your life and banishing the belly.

Young Living Essential Oils: Natural and Chemical Free Bug Repellent for Adults. Children and Pets!

Standard Process Farm Tour

Earlier this month, Dr. Kristy, Deanna and Andréa visited the Standard Process farm in Palmyra, WI.
Do you know where you supplements come from?
* SP has a 420 acre certified organic farm where most of the ingredients for their products are grown. They have maintained that certification for 10 years.
* No fertilizers or pesticides are used on the farm, just organic compost.
* Seeds for plants are non GMO
