Greetings!
We are only a few weeks into the New Year and there have already been so many exciting blessings upon us! For those of you who may not have heard, I accepted Scott's hand in marriage on Christmas morning! We are very excited and feel surrounded in love while we make plans to be married in the Caribbean in the spring of 2013! (I can already tell that this is going to be a paragraph with waaay too many exclamation points!!)
My second announcement is that on January 11th Andréa and Michael Evans became the parents of Bradley Michael, a healthy and beautiful little boy who was welcomed into this world following a magnificent home birth. I was fortunate enough to attend the birth and work alongside the midwives and doula to provide pain relief and adjust baby Bradley before he was even 1 year old! I will detail the benefits regarding home births and infant adjusting below...
I recently completed my 4th session towards the 100 hour certification in Applied Kinesiology...half way there! We were just talking about how everything happens for a reason and that is exactly the way I feel about the connections that have been made through One Life and the direction that we are moving in. It was a little less that one year that we made the decision to become a distributor for Standard Process whole food supplements. Not only have their products delivered unparalleled results, but the company itself has put us in the direct path of some very incredible educators and practitioners who have inspired the addition of some incredible systems for diagnosis and treatment and support that we will be continuing to add throughout the early part of this year! (i might as well keep the exclamation points coming at this point!)
One of the new services that we have recently adopted is a 21 day Purification Program. We graduated our first very brave group right before Christmas and their results were astounding! The max weight lost was 15 pounds and the highest body fat reduction was 5%....in 21 days! Our next group is rounding out their first week and learning the ropes of building a healthy relationship with food and eating. Again, details to follow in the article below.
We are committed to making this year our best ever and hopefully yours too!

In good health naturally,

Home Births vs Hospital Births

The most common response to someone having a home birth rather than a hospital birth is, "Isn't that dangerous?" Now that I have witnessed one first hand, I can tell you that it most definitely should not be. In fact, it is one of the most beautiful and empowering experiences I have ever seen. Midwives are a highly trained and state certified profession. Many come from nursing backgrounds and are trained in emergency procedures and neonatal resuscitation. The first and foremost priority for a midwife is to screen her patient prior to approval for a home birth. By strict examination including vital signs, bloodwork and past medical history, a midwife can rule out possible emergency complications. Examinations are continued throughout the pregnancy to measure the baby as it grows, check for positioning of the baby and continue to monitor the mother's vital signs and bloodwork. I was completely impressed with the midwife who Andréa and Michael chose both during the pregnancy and at the delivery. Her name is Brigitte Rhody-Garrison and she can be reached at birthplanet@aol.com.
So why would a couple choose to have their baby at home? For each couple, I'm sure that the answer is individual, but some common motivators exist. For example, the United States is the only country in the world where the majority of births occur in the hospital. Midwives still attend 70-80% of births in Europe and Japan, but only 8% of births in the U.S. With that said, the U.S. ranks last in terms of infant and mother mortality rates among all dedveloped countries including Sweden, Spain, France, Germany, Australia, England and Canada!! Once again proving that more medical intervention is not necessarily better. Did you know that more than 6 out of every 1000 births in the U.S. ends in mortality?
While the number of C-Sections has steadily climbed and in some parts of the U.S now also come with a tummy tuck, epidemiologists are realizing the harmful and often deadly affects of medical intervention. As hospitals as a business are rushing patients in and out and concerned with turning over beds, women aren't being able to labor for as long as it takes. New diagnosis such as "failure to progress" have arisen leading to a domino effect of pushing pitocin, giving an epidural for the strong and very painful contractions caused by the pitocin, more drugs for the side-effects of pitocin such as severe itching, and eventually emergency C-sections due to compromised blood and oxygen supply to the baby as a result of all of the above. The C-section rate has climbed 46% since 1996!
This season of "convenience birthing" doesn't come without risks. Vaginal births are statistically safer. C-sections are linked with damage to the mother's appendix, bladder, uterus and colon as well as antibiotic resistant infections. Many would also argue that unnatural birthing doesn't allow the mother to experience the natural flood of opiate morphine endorphins that aids in the instinctual mother-infant bond. This could be linked with post-partum depression and rejection of one's own baby.
While some women choose homebirths because of the above medical statistics, many others choose to be in the comfort of their own homes where they feel empowered to allow their bodies to completely take over and where they have full autonomy to make decisions for themselves and to take as long as they may need to labor. For women who are not sure which way they would like to go, Bradley Method Natural Child Birth classes are a comprehensive 12 week program that focuses on anatomy, nutrition, breathing exercises, exercises for pelvic opening and techniques for paid control. Andréa used Laura Smith and she can be reached at piratepurl@gmail.com or visit her website at http://www.bradleybirth.com/laurasmith.
At One Life, we believe that a woman has the right to choose which birthing style is right for her without judgement. Practitioners should provide information on all of the available choices so that when the time comes, you can make an informed decision.

The Fathers view on home birth

After my son Bradley was born at home and I had time to sit down and reflect on the past 10 months and the day of his birth, I found myself in a whirlwind of emotion. I am exhausted and have been on the verge of tears for days now with the JOY of his birth and the reflection of the months leading up to it.
After finding out my wife was pregnant we went about the normalcy of pregnant society (like lemmings), making trips to my wife's OB where they made us sit in the waiting room for up to an hour past our appointment time only to spend 5 minutes with the doctor. (Still thinking this is how it     was supposed to be).
My wife had mentioned to the OB Midwife that she wanted a natural un-medicated birth with no intervention. The OB made a "face" at us and with reluctance mentioned BRADLEY classes to us.
We quickly signed up for classes. All I can say is WOW!  My eyes where opened to a world I feel has been hidden from me by the medical community. Up until this point I had not thought of or considered Home Birth....after all thats what hospitals are for right? Then someone said to me...."hospitals are for sick people and when did pregnancy become an illness?"
SLAP...ok my eyes are open and I started reading and asking questions and sucking up as much info as I could...then I remembered back 20 years ago when I was a volunteer with the fire dept and how we had delivered babies in the back of a moving ambulance with no doctors and no medications and holy cow...we never lost any mothers or babies. After doing our own research, we found out that 3rd world countries have a lower mortality rate for mothers and babies than America....really?  Woman in mud huts in Africa have a better chance then us with all of our medical advancements.  Scary stuff!
We have invented terms like " failure to progress."  What does this mean anyway?  Are you telling me that if you dont do a C- section the baby will be 18 years old and still in the womb? Guess what...if you  leave the mother alone...the baby is going to come...thats what she is made to do.
After months of criticism from friends and family on having a home birth, being called "irresponsible" or "crazy," we stuck to our guns.  After learning all we had learned about what happens to babies during petocin induced labors and emergency C- sections and that a widely used drug called Cytotec used by hospitals to induce labor causes uterine rupture and kills mothers (even though the manufacturer of this drug states NOT to be used in pregnant women), how could we NOT have a home birth with a qualified birth team?  Knowledge is responsibility. We took all the precautions needed to make sure Mom and Baby would be safe. My house was stocked with all necessary medical supplies and my car was in the garage...back door open and back seat prepared to set my wife in and head to the hospital on the off chance an emergency occurred....we are educated not nearsighted. Hospitals are there to help those who truly have emergency cases and thank God for them.
Having our son at home, in the peace and quiet and comfort of our home was the most awesome experience I have ever had, bar none. As a Father and a Husband, your first pri-mortal instinct is to protect your family. After educating myself on both sides of birthing we decided the best way I could protect my family was to do it right here in our home and avoid  "its just how it is" policies. We didn't want to be in a place that takes away the power of a woman and confidence in her own body to handle the gift nature gave her.

We chose home birth and not for one second are we sorry we did....if we have another child we will do it again.

Facts on Sugar Consumption and Your Health

With the holiday season ending and a new year beginning a simple step you can take in helping to regain your health would be monitoring how much sugar you eat and drink.

Sugar consumption has continued to rise every year in the United States and has been historically and categorically connected to the rise in many health issues and epidemics in the United States includes obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Today the average American adult consumes 20 teaspoons of sugar a day whereas the average adolescent and child consume a whopping 34 teaspoons of sugar a day. Just to put this into perspective one 20 ounce bottle of soda contains an average of 17 teaspoons of sugar! Lowering your sugar consumption is something anyone and everyone should be focused on for many reasons:
  • Sugar is addictive.  It can be intoxicating like alcohol and can lead to alcoholism.
  • Sugar causes tooth and gum decay.  Tooth and gum decay can lead to Heart Disease.

  • Sugar compromises the lining of your capillaries and contributes to varicose veins.
  • Excess sugar has been linked to atherosclerosis, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease.
  • Excessive sugar can be damaging to your liver and kidney as it increases the size of both organs and causes kidney stones.
  • It disrupts your sleep cycle which compromises your immune system and causes more sickness and disease.
  • Sugar feeds cancer cells.  It has been linked to development of many cancers including breast, ovarian, prostate, rectal, pancreatic, lung, gallbladder and stomach.
  • Sugar causes loss of tissue elasticity and can lead to premature aging of skin.
  • It leads to a decrease in your insulin sensitivity causing high insulin levels and diabetes.
  • Sugar suppresses your immune system and impairs your defenses against infectious diseases like the Influenza Virus.
  • It weakens eyesight and leads to cataracts and nearsightedness.
  • It aggravates autoimmune conditions such as arthritis, asthma and MS.
  • Sugar is associated with acidic digestive tract, heartburn, indigestion, ulcers, malabsorption, yeast, food allergies and increased risk of Chrohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
  • It interferes with calcium and magnesium absorption contributing to osteoporosis.
