How To Make This School Year a Success!
Greetings!

I hope you all had an incredible summer! With the change of seasons right around the corner and the kids back to school, our health focus changes direction. Fall is a great time of year to check-up on our children's well-being, boost our immune systems before the cold and flu season hits, explore the benefits of a 9-Day Detox Program before the holiday season brings plenty of temptation and to get back into our health routines that the hectic summer months whisked away.

This month's newsletter is filled with useful information on Chiropractic Wellness and Children. If your children have already been under care, now is a great time for a check-up. If your children have never been into our office, we are offering FREE consultations and spinal scans to promote early prevention.

In good health naturally,

Dr. Kristy Allen

 CHALKBOARDBackpack Health

If your child's school doesn't offer a set of books to be left at home, a proper fitting backpack will be critical to their spinal health. There are many backpacks to choose from. We recommend the variety with 2 padded shoulder straps that is worn over both shoulders. A bag that also offers a strap to be fitted around the waist is even better.

The straps should be fitted tightly so that the weight of the bag's contents is carried over the mid-back just slightly below the shoulder blades. The bag shouldn't sag to waist height because it will put added stress on the low back as well as the neck. If the bag is too heavy, it is a good idea to take out heavier objects and carry in front of the body.

My Child is in Sports, Should They Get Adjusted?

Because many illnesses in adulthood can be traced back to injuries in childhood, any child who plays contact sports, one hand dominant sports like racquet sports or golf, or even carries an instrument should be checked for spinal misalignments.

Regular care can also help with exercise induced asthma, to decrease reliance on inhalers and steroid therapy. In one study, children were able to decrease their medication by an average of 66% and attacks decreased by 45%.

Central nervous system rebalancing using cold laser therapy and eyelights also improves balance and coordination and increases reaction time for the competitive edge. Many professional athletes from baseball, football, golf and cycling seek this type of treatment to stay ahead of their competitors.

Can Chiropractic Help With ADD/ADHD?

It is all too common. Your child goes back to school and within the first couple of weeks, you get a letter recommending that your child see their pediatrician to investigate ADD symptoms. Parents need to know there are options for those who would rather not put children on medications with dangerous and distracting side-effects.

ADD/ADHD is most often caused by an overwhelmed nervous system. Imbalances in posture, nutrition, toxic overload, allergies and sensitivities, or eye dominance can all cause misfiring between the left and right cerebral cortex in the brain. This mismatch in the way that information is exchanged can cause seizure-like activity that can make it difficult to sit still for long periods of time or to pay attention.

Chiropractic treatments are extremely effective for these conditions and don't have threatening side-effects like traditional medications that are prescribed. Ask about adjustments, detoxification, nutritional supplementation and eyelight therapy today!

Colds and Flu: How to Keep Them Out of Your Home

Germs! Viruses! Stomach bugs!  As soon as the kids go back to school, it seems like the latest cold or flu comes home in their backpack.   There is good news for you and your family. Endless research concludes that children, as well as adults, who see a Chiropractor for preventative care experience significantly less illness.

Enhance your immune response with Chiropractic. A healthy nervous system is crucial to a healthy immune response. The nervous system is the "road" that the immune system uses to respond to an attack. Many people do not realize that regular chiropractic adjustments keep your "roads" clear. Those visits that keep your spine flexible and healthy may help you avoid the cold or flu this year

If the sniffles or a soar throat start to show up, there are 3 Nutri-West products that we recommend be in everyone's medicine cabinet.  T. Multimmune, T. Virx and Chewable C when taken at the very start of symptoms, can cut sick time in half! The ionic footbath will also help mobilize the lymphatic system to move infection away quicker.

As always, regular hand washing is the best prevention. Use warm water and a soap that is NOT anti-bacterial. Anti-bacterial soaps only kill weaker bacteria which leaves stronger, more resistant bacteria to thrive and multiply leading to antibiotic resistance.

Acupuncture Article:

Back to School Can Mean Back to Stress

"I have a headache, My stomach hurts, I don't feel good"  Sound familiar?

Returning to school means a change in schedules, sleep habits, increase (or decrease) in physical activity, new schools, new teachers or  new classes, all of which can cause stress which in turn can lead to physical issues.
Headache, stomach ache, constipation/diarrhea, insomnia, menstrual pain, fatigue, frequent colds are just a few examples of how stress can affect the body.

Parents may also feel the stress of back to school.  Perhaps it is balancing schedules of work, home and school.  Or maybe it is the "empty nest" syndrome when the last child leaves for college, which can bring on feelings of sadness, anxiety, insomnia, or general feelings of not being centered.  One way to combat stress is to balance your Qi (pronounced "chee", is the energy pathways in your body).

The theory of Oriental medicine is to prevent illness and disease by recognizing the relationship between climate, emotions, diet and lifestyle and how they affect your overall health. Acupuncture is the art of inserting very fine needles into specific locations or "points". The acupuncture points are areas that lie along the meridians or channels that circulate our Qi throughout our body.  These points are where the Qi is most accessible.  The points used during a treatment are carefully determined by the acupuncturist based on a number of factors that create the Chinese medicine "pattern". The needles are not coated with any chemicals, drugs, herbs or other substances.  They work simply in conjunction with the energy of your own Qi.

Most of the common ailments seen today are the result of stress, fatigue, poor diets, and hectic schedules.  The National Institutes of Health and the World Health Organization list over 40 conditions that are effectively treated with acupuncture.  Conditions include, sciatica, low back pain, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, migraine headaches, insomnia, indigestion, diarrhea, constipation, PMS, menopausal symptoms, menstrual disorders, anxiety and the symptoms of stress. Periodic balancing treatments help to keep the body tuned-up and healthy preventing illness and disease.  We schedule regular maintenance for our teeth, our cars and our furnace. Doesn't it make sense that we take care of our minds and bodies as well?
