What does Brimhall mean to you?
 6 Steps to Wellness
Dr. John Brimhall, creator of The 6 Steps to Wellness, has been lecturing with some of the leading experts in wellness care since the 70's after earning degrees in Chiropractic, Nutrition, Acupuncture, and Applied Kinesiology.  He has personally formulated over 70 nutritional products under the Nutri-West brand and holds 2 patents for Chiropractic adjusting equipment under the Erchonia name.  He now lectures across the country teaching his 35+ years experience to other doctors, so that their patients can share the same success that he has seen in his private practice where patients come from all around the world to be treated.

Nutrition is one of the six steps. Within this step, Dr. Brimhall has developed a systematic approach to replacing nutrients and balancing the body system by system.

Step 1: Rebalance adrenals and general adaptive stress response.
Step 2: Replenish nutrition for organs, glands and system weakness.
Step 3: Reduce infectious organisms in the body.
Step 4: Replace enzymes and/or HCl for digestion, assimilation
            and elimination.
Step 5: Restore proper bowel flora to optimize colon function.

Do I need supplements?
 Understanding the Facts
Let's face it, the information that is available to the consumer on this topic is conflicting.  All you have to do is turn on the local 6 O'clock news to hear about how vitamins may not be as helpful as you think.  So who do you believe?  Here are some facts to help you decide:

95% of degenerative conditions can be prevented by diet.

80% of all health problems are related to stress.

American surveys show that 40% of the total population never eat fruit or vegetables and 80% never consume whole grains and high fiber foods.

The National Cancer Institute states that a diet consisting of 5 or more servings of fruit & vegetables considerably lowers the risk of degenerative diseases, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.

The Environmental Protection Agency can identify over 400 toxic chemicals in human tissue.

Nutritional "deficiency" is at an all-time high and verging on nutritional "bankruptcy." This is due largely to a decrease in the mineral content of soil where U.S. crops are grown.  Mineral content drops when crops are not rotated properly or where pesticides are used.

According to the FDA and Congress, it is nearly impossible to eat the number of nutrients currently needed to prevent disease by diet alone; supplementation is necessary universally.
What Supplements Do I Buy?
What To Look For
We know that there is an overwhelming number of vitamins & supplements to choose from and that prices vary greatly from bottle to bottle.  We have spent countless hours to find the absolute highest quality supplements.   We highly recommend Nutriwest & Metagenics products and here is why:

* they are only available through licensed professionals to assure safety.
* GMP certified manufacturing from FDA
* pass U.S. disintegration standards
* products are scientifically researched by an independent 3rd party
* pharmaceutical grade for purity and quality of ingredients
* certificate of analysis available for all products
* certified organic and free from heavy metals
* no preservatives, colorings, or additives
* avoid common allergy sensitive ingredients like wheat, yeast, and corn when they can

We would like to invite you or your friends and relatives in for a FREE 15 MINUTE NUTRITIONAL CONSULTATION. (use the coupon below).  Bring in what you are currently taking, and we can test them to make sure they are right for your body's individual needs.

What does RDA mean?
We now know that the Recommended Daily Allowance doesn't tell us everything that we need to know about health and nutrition. In the US, the RDA is an estimate of the average safe amount of nutrients and calories needed to prevent deficiency. The RDA is NOT adjusted for age, weight, gender, activity level or medical history.

The RDA is not devised for specific individual requirements and tells us only the bare minimum of vitamin or minerals required to prevent disease ---much lower than the amount to promote health. The RDA, similar to Food Pyramid information is an outdated attempt to simplify intake guidelines.

Common Questions:
Am I taking too much or is this toxic in high doses?

It makes sense to be concerned over the safety of any vitamin, mineral, herb or prescription drug.  A chemist, RJ Williams, developed the concept of "biochemical individuality."  He stated "Each individual has a distinctive nutrient environment of his or her own, because while the list of nutrients needed by all of us may be the same, the respective amounts needed are necessarily not the same for all individuals."

"Studies have shown that there are vitamins and minerals have large therapeutic indices and are free from adverse side effects even at doses of 10 to 20 times the normal dietary intake." (Hathcock JN. Vitamins & Minerals; Efficacy and Safety. Am J Clin Nutr. 1997;66:427)  So if you take the RDA of calcium, depending on what your starting point is, you may never get to a healthy starting point.  That is why we use Applied Kinesiology, your lab work, and Bio-meridian Stress Assessment to determine nutritional priorities.

I am already taking a multi-vitamin, isn't that enough?.

Compare labels from our Core Level Health Reserve to Centrum Daily. Centrum sounds promising when you look at what each tablet contains--it says there is 150% of your Daily Needs. This sounds promising at first glance, but this number doesn't tell you how much of each nutrient yoru body can actually absorb. When too many ingredients are combined in the same tablet or capsule, they can counteract each other and you may only be getting as little as 10-15% of what is listed on the label.

Another consideration is in the ingredients that you will find listed below the RDA information. Those tongue twisters are fillers, binders, preservatives, coatings and colorings that are also in each pill. These added ingredients not only affect the absorbability of nutrients, but many are toxic and have been linked to cancers! A chemical analysis of one of the most popular over-the-counter multi-vitamins was shown to contain chalk, tar, pesticides and sewer sludge!

Many supplement companies don't publicly list the source of each ingredient, which greatly affects the body's ability to digest, absorb & utilize each nutrient.  One of our own well-known industries right here in Rochester used to sell their own "vitamins" that were formulated using waste products from film developing....Yuck!

The Bottom Line- Not all vitamins are created equally and you can't always rely on tricky labelling standards. We've done the research for you and we feel 100% confident in recommending Nutri-West and Metagenics products.
Common Medications & Their Related Nutrient Depletion
Drugs Affect Nutrition
One of my most brilliant Chiropractic professors, Dr. Mary Balliett, a biochemistry graduate from Cornell University taught us that  there is no such thing as a "drug side-effect."  The side effects are the unwanted effect of a chemical taken internally on the undesired target organs. In English-if you swallow a medication designed for the stomach, it is absorbed in your bloodstream and therefore interacts with every organ, not just your stomach! While that drug may be useful by the stomach, it can be harmful when it comes into contact with the cells of your heart, liver or kidneys, for example.

Below is a list of some common medications and the nutrients that they deplete when ingested. For a complete listing, see our Drug-Induced Nutrient Depletion Handbook in our office.

LIPITOR: depletes CoQ10, an important antioxidant for healthy heart tissue.
ZYRTEC: depletes B vitamins & healthy gut flora, important for stress and digestion.
FLONASE:  depletes calcium & folic acid, important for immune function, bone density and the nervous
                  system.
PRILOSEC: depletes B12.
ASPIRIN: depletes Folic acid, iron, & vitamin C, important for soft tissue and heart health.
IBUPROFEN:  depletes Folic acid.
ESTROGEN: depletes magnesium, zinc, & vitamin C, important antioxidants and minerals involved in over 500
                    reactions in the human body.

Monthly Feature:
Each month, this feature will walk you through one or more sections of www.onelifechiropractic.com

Since the focus is nutrition this month, first click on the Nutrition tab in the left hand column of the homepage to watch a short video.

After that, read more under "Nutrition Counseling" by clicking under Techniques in the left hand column of the hompage.  You can also read about "Applied Kinesiology" (AK) by clicking under Techniques.  AK is the technique we use to determine what supplements work best with your body.  We call it a Total Body Scan.

Find out about the supplements that we recommend by going to the Nutri-West Products and/or Metagenics Products tabs.  They are on the toolbar along the left side of the homepage.  After you are to the products list, you can research it's supportive function (organ or body system being helped), ingredients, suggested dosage, and contraindications.  While you are checking out the supplements you are taking, you can also read about manufacturing processes and scientific studies regarding certain products.
