Mug House
Back by popular demand, we are offering unique opportunities to learn about Mesa Verde’s cultural and natural history…through the photographer’s lens, and from representations of historical figures from the park’s past.

Several openings remain for a special fall three-day photography workshop led by well known photographer Professor Emeritus Dr. Gene Balzer. The workshop is scheduled for October 12-14, 2012 and is limited to 13 participants to ensure plenty of personalized coaching. It begins at noon on Friday and ends on Sunday afternoon. Tuition includes three days of instruction, two nights in-park motel lodging at the Far View Lodge, and all meals including two dinners at the famed Metate Room Restaurant. Click here for more workshop information or to sign up.

In partnership with the National Park Service, interpretive rangers conduct nightly Twilight Tours of Cliff Palace while portraying meticulously-researched historical figures. Enjoy an evening with Lucy Peabody or Virginia McClurg (the “Mothers of Mesa Verde”), Pulitzer Prize winner and acclaimed American author Willa Cather, Superintendent Jesse Nusbaum, or another person of great significance to the park. Click here to view the complete slate of offerings. Twilight Tours will be presented through September 15, 2012. Tickets can only be purchased in person, up to two days in advance of the tour, at the MVMA bookstore desk at the Far View Visitor Center.

Since 2006, the Mesa Verde Museum Association has offered visitors a variety of in-depth learning experiences in Mesa Verde National Park. Through free or low-cost seminars, workshops, lectures, and special programs, visitors of all ages gain a new, behind-the-scenes understanding of Mesa Verde and the Four Corners. Creating Links to Mesa Verde's Ancient Past

A key Mesa Verde visitor experience is the introduction to Native American cultures, activities, and traditions, particularly those of the tribes affiliated with the park. This is accomplished throughout the year through a variety of exhibits, demonstrations, lectures, and performances. These activities not only delight visitors to Mesa Verde, but they also help provide a tangible link from the ancient past to the present, helping visitors appreciate and understand the tremendous significance of American Indian traditions and culture.

Each demonstration or activity typically costs the park anywhere from $2,500 to $4,000, and the Mesa Verde Foundation is helping the park fund these sorts of educational programs and activities.

We invite you to help sponsor these activities through a tax-deductible contribution to the Mesa Verde Foundation. Providing support is quick and easy. Simply click here, which takes you to the Mesa Verde Foundation website.

You may either mail in your contribution, or click the “donate” link to make a credit card gift. Be sure to note in the message box that you would like your gift to be used to support the Native American Cultural Demonstrations at Mesa Verde.

Curation Facility Tours Offered at Anasazi Heritage Center

The Curation staff at the Bureau of Land Management Anasazi Heritage Center (AHC) will host weekly “Behind-the-Scenes” tours of its curation and collections management facility through October 31. Tours are open to the public, and are free with the cost of admission to the AHC. Federal recreation pass holders and people under age 18 always enjoy free admission to the museum.

These tours will take place every Thursday at 2 p.m. Each tour can accommodate a maximum of 10 people. Participants may register in advance at the museum’s front desk, or by phone at 970-882-5613 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays.

The AHC curation facility is one of three federal repositories for archeological materials managed by the BLM, and provides long-term storage for artifacts from public land in southwest Colorado, including the Wetherill Family archives. This tour provides an opportunity to understand why artifacts are curated, how this work is done, and why it is important. A tour lasts approximately one hour.

The Anasazi Heritage Center is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week throughout the summer season. For more information, contact the museum at 970-882-5600 or see its web site at www.co.blm.gov/ahc

Images of America: Mesa Verde National Park by Duane Smith, and Images of America: Cortez by Vila Schwindt, Janet Weeth, and Dale Davidson

Images of America
If a picture is worth a thousand words, then these titles could be worth a whopping 200,000 words—each! Arcadia Publishing’s popular “Images of America” series includes Mesa Verde National Park and Cortez, and are now available through MVMA.

Mesa Verde National Park was written by noted historian Duane Smith and features more than 200 vintage photographs from several archives to tell the park’s story. Topics addressed include the role of the New Deal, the women who saved the park, and of course the park’s rich archeological history.

Cortez (where many MVMA and National Park Service employees and volunteers live) was written by Vila Schwindt, Janet Weeth, and Dale Davidson; Vila is a writer/editor, and Janet and Dale are both Southwestern archeologists. The story of Colorado’s southwestern-most city is told by those who know it well, and is annotated with over 200 historic photographs. Cortez lies 7 miles from Mesa Verde’s entrance, and is surrounded by scenic mountains and red-rock canyons, Ancestral Puebloan archeological sites, tribal lands, and a sunny climate. Yet for centuries, rugged landscapes and lack of water made communication, transportation, and commerce difficult. Residents developed a fierce self-reliance. Read this book to learn more!
