MVF has had a busy winter, preparing
for some exciting programs and activities
in 2012.
The Foundation recently held its winter
board meeting in Phoenix, and many new
initiatives were discussed. We are eagerly
anticipating the completion of the new
Visitor and Research Center (VRC), which
will provide wonderful collections storage
for the thousands of Mesa Verde artifacts.
Not only will the facility provide proper
storage for the collections, but it
also will make them considerably more
accessible to scientists and researchers.
The Foundation continues to be proud
of the role it has played in helping
this amazing project come to life.
With the anticipated completion of
the VRC, the Foundation has been working
with park staff to identify new projects
and initiatives that need funding at
Mesa Verde. Some of these include an
important stabilization study for Cliff
Palace, a Native American Internship
program within the park, the development
of a new interpretive film for the Chapin
Mesa Museum, and some trail construction
along some long abandoned trails within
the park. The Foundation is looking
forward to helping the park fund these
important programs and projects.
The Foundation also is planning some
programs and events both in Denver and
at the park. In Denver, with the April
opening of the new History Colorado
Center, we hope to host a tour of this
wonderful new facility that houses one
of the finest Mesa Verde collections
anywhere. In the park, we are exploring
a fall biking and hiking event on Wetherill
Mesa. Watch this newsletter for future
details.
Free
Winter Ecology Hike on February 25

Park rangers will be leading a second
guided hike focusing on winter ecology
at Mesa Verde National Park on Saturday,
February 25, beginning at 9 a.m. The
guided hike is free, but advance sign-up
is requested. Children are welcome and
should be at least 7 years old to join
the hike. Participants will meet at
the Morefield Village gas station, and
then explore the hillsides around the
Morefield Campground, looking for signs
of wildlife and observing adaptations
of plants and animals in the winter
months. Be prepared to be outdoors for
2 3 hours with extra layers of
clothing, water, and snacks. There is
a limit of 20 adults and children. If
needed, snowshoes will be provided,
or you may bring your own. Park entrance
fees are waived during the month of
February. To sign up, for weather conditions,
and for more information on the hike,
please call the Chapin Mesa Museum at
970-529-4631.
